Reason for hope... we are making a difference

Shir Hever: Israelis Are Beginning to See the Power of BDS [boycott, divestment and sanctions] / Alternative Information Center (AIC)

In recent years, there has been a gradual growth in the BDS (boycott, divestment and sanctions) movement, calling to put economic pressure on Israel until it recognizes the rights of the occupied Palestinian people and puts an end the occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

The Israeli attack on the Gaza Strip, starting on 27 December 2008, which lasted for nearly a month, has given this movement a powerful reason to redouble its efforts. Dozens of BDS campaigns have gained momentum and publicity; dozens of new ones were launched during or immediately after Israel's attack on the Gaza Strip.

These campaigns range from calls to boycott goods from the illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank, to calls to stop all economic contacts with Israel altogether. They include protests at sporting events, two countries cutting diplomatic ties with Israel (Bolivia and Venezuela), and many demonstrations around the world, attended by hundreds of thousands of protestors.

The growing protest against the atrocities committed by the Israeli military in the Gaza Strip have begun to change something in the Israeli political discourse, and the first indication of this can already be seen in the Israeli economic media.

Although the Israeli economic media doesn't concern itself with the moral dimension of the attacks on Gaza, the economic dimension of recent events have created a rising level of concern. In order to demonstrate this trend, here are summaries of four articles that appeared in the Israeli The Marker magazine for economic news:

1. On 2 February, Guy Grimland warned about a growing phenomenon of boycott of Israeli high-tech companies, and several Israeli companies received letters from European and U.S. companies explaining that they cannot invest in Israel for moral reasons.

2. In 3 February, Nehemia Strassler, one of Israel's most famous economic correspondents, attacked the Israeli Minister of Industry, Trade and Labor, Eli Yishai, for calling on the Israeli military to "destroy one hundred homes in Gaza for every rocket that falls in Israel." Strassler had nothing to say about the Palestinians living in these homes or about the loss of life, but he warned:

"[the minister] doesn't even understand how the operation in Gaza hurts the economy. The horror sights on television and the words of politicians in Europe and Turkey change the behavior of consumers, businessmen and potential investors. Many European consumers boycott Israeli products in practice. The Truth About the Genocide Against Tamils

It's amazing how much the government of a tiny country can influence people all over the world. I totally understand where many are coming from - many people are uneducated about what is really going. That's the problem.

I myself am Sri Lankan. I wasn't born there but I know what's happening. I'll tell you now that you probably won't be able to find anything I say in here backed up by any sources because the Sri Lankan government (which is made up entirely of Singhalese people), controls the media and every other damn thing in the country and would never let anything like this go public. So here it is:

The war between Singhalese and Tamil people has been going on for over 25 years. The Tamils are a minority in the country, and requested for a portion of the country to be declared just for Tamils; Tamil Eelam. The Singhalese government denied them this. One of the reasons why Tamils wanted to be separate is because the government would only let the Singhalese people get the better jobs and universities. For instance, if a Tamil person was applying to university, he/she would need an 80% average. A Singhalese person however, would only require a 60%.

Because of this unfairness, the Tamil Tigers were formed. They are not, and I don't mind being quoted on this, they are NOT a terrorist group. The only time the Tigers would ever use violence was if their people were being harmed. I find it completely stupid how other are saying that they kill their own people when presently, the Tamils are asking the Tigers to protect them from the government that is continuing to try and demolish them - congratulations. You've nearly done it. I hope you're proud.

When the Tsunami hit, all the money raised, every single penny of it was given to the government. The government then gave the resources to the Singhalese areas, leaving the Tamils to die. And now, they have come up with this ridiculous lie and are telling the world how the Tigers are dangerous. Sorry. When you try and kill the Tamils, the Tigers will protect them. That's what they do. And all this bullsh*t about the Tigers recruiting children is completely false. Just another lie the government has come up with to try and make the Tigers look bad. They've even got India to buy their lies. Currently, the Indian army is in Sri Lanka, also helping the government. They are killing the Tamils - Tigers and civilians both.

It's unbelievable how uneducated the world is. People that do not know what is going on should not be talking like they do. Research is false. Everything in the media is what the Sri Lankan government wants you to see. Not what is really happening.

The war between the Singhalese and Tamils is now worse than ever. No one's helping. Limited people even know what's going on. And those that do aren't doing anything. The last time I checked, the Sri Lankan government has captured the Tamil Tiger's last major area. They're dieing. So for all of you that think the Tigers are terrorists, they're dieing. Feel better? The civilians are dieing too. The civilians that are getting caught between the Sri Lankan government & Singhalese army, and the Tamil Tigers crossfire. The civilians that begged the Tigers to protect them. Once the government kills the Tigers, they kill the civilians that were with them.

Don't get misinformed like the majority of the world. Everything that is actually going on in the country, you will not find on Google. In order to know what is really happening ask an actual Sri Lankan, like myself. Go to the protests. See what they have to say. Don't resort to believing what you see on the internet or newspapers. The Sri Lankan government refuses to publish the truth - the fact that there is indeed genocide in Sri Lanka against Tamils, and there has been for over 25 years. Only now, it's worse than ever.

US Aid: The Facts

Israel and the US have a long-established special relationship. The US was the first country to recognise the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948.
Israel is considered America’s closest non-NATO ally in the Middle East, a region that is geopolitically crucial to the US.
The close relationship between the two states is reflected in the volume of aid Israel receives from the US. Since World War II Israel has been the largest overall recipient of US aid: from 1949-2006 Israel received more than $156 billion of direct US aid.
Until 2003, Israel received approximately one-third of the annual US foreign aid budget. In 2005, the US gave Israel more than $2.6 billion in aid, a budget exceeded only by US aid to Iraq. By comparison, Jordan received $683.6 million, Rwanda received $77 million, and the Occupied Palestinian Territories received $348.2 million.
In the past, a majority of the direct US aid to Israel was via US Economic Support Funds (ESF). The US publicly states that ESF are given in order to support stability in areas strategic to the US. However, the recipient government completely controls how it spends these funds.
The US also lends money to Israel, but these loans are frequently waived before any repayments are made. The Washington Report on Middle East Affairs has estimated that from 1974-2003 Israel benefited from more than $45 billion in waived loans from the US.
Direct US aid to Israel has significantly diminished since 1996 in order to reduce Israeli financial dependence on the US. Speaking to the US Congress in July 1996, Former Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu declared, “We will begin the long-term process of gradually reducing the level of your generous economic assistance to Israel.”

Political support

The US has a history of giving Israel direct political support. In 1972, the US prevented the adoption of UN resolution S/10784 paragraph 74, which condemned Israeli attacks against southern Lebanon and Syria. In order to do this, the US used its veto power in the Security Council for only the second time.
Since 1972, the US has used its veto power to prevent the adoption of 42 UN resolutions that condemned or severely criticized actions by the State of Israel. In 2006, for example, the US prevented the adoption of UN resolution S/878, which demanded a mutual ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
In 2002, former US Ambassador to the United Nations, John Negroponte, stated that it was US policy to denounce all UN resolutions that criticized Israel without also condemning “terrorist groups.” This statement is now known as the Negroponte-doctrine.US Aid: The Facts Israel and the US have a long-established special relationship.... more

Israeli troops massacre 30,000 chickens in Gaza. Why?

Did the poultry fire rockets at the troops or something? It's no laughing matter when you read this. And there was absolutely no reason for troops to be so vile. Here's Sameh's story:

Israel's devastating war on Gaza claimed the lives of more than 1,335 persons and left at least 5,500 other wounded. In addition tens of thousands of utilities, houses, businesses, and factories were partially or totally destroyed. The war caused psychological damage for thousands of people especially children. I reported on the war daily and my focus was on the human toll. However, I recently came across a story that changed my focus completely a revealed to me the true nature of Israel's soldiers and their intent in invading Gaza.

Since the ceasefire was enacted, I have toured throughout Gaza to document some stories and accounts. Although I wrote many articles, I decided to focus on the untold stories of the war: the brutal massacre of thousands of chickens.

On 5 January, many Israeli tanks, troops and bulldozers advanced into the al-Zeitoun neighborhood south east of Gaza City. In this area, called al-Samouni, Israel killed 49 members of the Samouni family, after soldiers ordered them to gather into a single home, which was shelled several hours later.

A number of chicken farms are located only a few meters away from the Samouni house. These farms came under fire by Israeli forces and were totally bulldozed. Thousands of chickens were caught in their sheds, as the bulldozing destroyed their cages. Some died immediately, others slowly without food or water for four days.

Abu Ahmed al-Sawafari, an owner of a chicken farms owners, was sitting amidst the rubble of his destroyed farm. He explained that "I have been working on that profession for long years. I have been growing my business by all efforts. Israelis came then left causing an earthquake in the area. They have killed these chickens, they are equal to human souls. They were suffocated and died due to hunger. I wonder why the Israelis killed these chickens? Were they firing rockets into Israel?"

I continued touring farms in the area where the smell of death filled the air. Surviving chickens roamed around surrounded by thousands of their dead kin. It was an overwhelming scene leaving one to ask only: why?

If this question was directed to the Israeli army their response would be swift and predictable. They would likely contend that "rockets" were being fired from the farms, or that there were Palestinian resistance fighters in the area. However, unless the Israeli army is prepared to claim that these chickens were resistance fighters or were firing rockets nothing can explain why the self-proclaimed "world's most moral army" would engage in the wholesale slaughter of civilians and chickens alike.

More countries cut ties to Israel over Gaza, "Israel a terrorist nation"

More countries are accusing Israel of participating in "state terrorism" against "the most weak and innocent human beings: children, women and the aged and called for Israeli leaders be tried before an international court for crimes against humanity. They furthermore urged that Israeli President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Ehud Olmert be declared war criminals. This is in addition to the recent calls from European, Arab and Asian nations as well as Australia and New Zealand calling for a war crimes investigation into Israels activities.

The statement accused the Israelis of having "ignored, systematically, calls from the United Nations, violating in a repeated and shameless manner the resolutions approved by the overwhelming majority of their members and placing themselves ever more on the margin of international law."

I'd like to point out that my reporting what i find in the news about Israel is only to keep it fresh in the minds of people as well as to inform the US public, since the US media is pretty well one sided in their views of Israel. Millions of people, probably hundreds of million--are very upset with what Israel has done and collectively as a peaceful people, we do not want Israel to get away with it.

For the most part, including myself, we are NOT antisemitic and we are NOT for ANY violence. You can say all you want, and myself and many others will not even entertain your name calling, or your propaganda. We know of the Israel government and Israel Lobby propaganda machine and just reading how they manipulate facts literally gets me sick.

Some of the name calling by some is indicative of us being involved with the terrorists. If that is so, maybe a visit by your local government is in store for you since you have of some evidence of "criminal" activity on these blogs. We can arrange for the visit if you insist. It'd make our day!

We are merely red hot mad at Israel for the inhumane treatment and murders of many innocent people as well as how Israel trapped and set up the Palestinians almost two years before the slaughter and right after the original cease fire agreement (18 months ago) by closing all borders and not allowing any life sustaining supplies to be shipped in. According the the UN this is in itself an act of war to ANY country. Gaza was and is under siege all this time.

So, we respect your opinions and welcome debate...serious debate and you can call us anything you want. BUT....Call us terrorists or in cahoots with Hamas or any other so called "terrorists" organization and I guarantee you will have a 'special' government visit to write your report of your "evidence" you say you have. Then you can face the ramifications of your actions.

If Israel wants to start treating the innocent Palestinians like PEOPLE and give them a FAIR and BALANCED Peace deal, we're with Israel 100%. In our opinion, Israel is more of a terrorist then any other organization or country and has committed far more crimes, more horrible than any others against civilians and Israel will pay for these crimes thru the criminal courts throughout the world.More countries are accusing Israel of participating in "state terrorism"... more
