"Our movie, '2012,' is all about the preparation for the end of the world," producer Mark Gordon says bluntly.
An end of the world predicted, the movie informs us, by the ancient Mayan culture of what is now Mexico, whose sophisticated calendar ends on Dec. 21, 2012, at precisely 11 minutes and 11 seconds past six in the morning, Eastern time - if you're counting.
Exactly how the world ends, the Mayans generously left to Hollywood's imagination. And so we get the usual hail of meteors and monstrous tsunamis.
And the requisite heroic struggle of one family to survive, this time led by actor John Cusak.
The Mayans were surprisingly good at calendar making, and they developed a series of time measures including a "long cycle" of 5,125 years - a cycle that ends on Dec. 21, 2012.
"It will be the birth of a new era," says Lawrence Joseph, author of "Apocalypse 2012," a book based, like the movie, on the Mayan prophecy. "And like any other birth it will be accompanied by joy and blood and pain."
More joy than pain is the hope in Hollywood. "2012" is just the first of several films linked to the doomsday prophesies for that year.
"The extraordinary thing is that mindless films linked to disasters do so well at the box office during a period of economic difficulty," says film critic Richard Fitzwilliams. "This is not a film interested in truth, but it's been shown clearly in several recent films that bogus prophecies make excellent box office."
As for the director of "2012," Roland Emmerich, whose repertoire of disaster movies includes "The Day After Tomorrow" and "Independence Day," he already has plans for December 21, of 2012.
He'll be skiing on a very tall mountain. If the big waves don't come, he'll just keep skiing."Our movie, '2012,' is all about the preparation for the end of the world," producer... more
"With the upcoming disaster film "2012" and the current hype about Mayan calendars and doomsday predictions, it seems like a good time to put such notions in context.
Most prophets of doom come from a religious perspective, though the secular crowd has caused its share of scares as well. One thing the prognostications tend to share in common: They don't come to pass.
Here are 10 that didn't pan out, so far:
The Prophet Hen of Leeds, 1806
History has countless examples of people who have proclaimed that the return of Jesus Christ is imminent, but perhaps there has never been a stranger messenger than a hen in the English town of Leeds in 1806. It seems that a hen began laying eggs on which the phrase "Christ is coming" was written. As news of this miracle spread, many people became convinced that doomsday was at hand — until a curious local actually watched the hen laying one of the prophetic eggs and discovered someone had hatched a hoax.
The Millerites, April 23, 1843
A New England farmer named William Miller, after several years of very careful study of his Bible, concluded that God's chosen time to destroy the world could be divined from a strict literal interpretation of scripture. As he explained to anyone who would listen, the world would end some time between March 21, 1843 and March 21, 1844. He preached and published enough to eventually lead thousands of followers (known as Millerites) who decided that the actual date was April 23, 1843. Many sold or gave away their possessions, assuming they would not be needed; though when April 23 arrived (but Jesus didn't) the group eventually disbanded—some of them forming what is now the Seventh Day Adventists.
Mormon Armageddon, 1891 or earlier
Joseph Smith, founder of the Mormon church, called a meeting of his church leaders in February 1835 to tell them that he had spoken to God recently, and during their conversation he learned that Jesus would return within the next 56 years, after which the End Times would begin promptly.
Halley's Comet, 1910
In 1881, an astronomer discovered through spectral analysis that comet tails include a deadly gas called cyanogen (related, as the name imples, to cyanide). This was of only passing interest until someone realized that Earth would pass through the tail of Halley's comet in 1910. Would everyone on the planet be bathed in deadly toxic gas? That was the speculation reprinted on the front pages of "The New York Times" and other newspapers, resulting in a widespread panic across the United States and abroad. Finally even-headed scientists explained that there was nothing to fear.
Pat Robertson, 1982
In May 1980, televangelist and Christian Coalition founder Pat Robertson startled and alarmed many when — contrary to Matthew 24:36 ("No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven...") he informed his "700 Club" TV show audience around the world that he knew when the world would end. "I guarantee you by the end of 1982 there is going to be a judgment on the world," Robertson said.
Heaven's Gate, 1997
When comet Hale-Bopp appeared in 1997, rumors surfaced that an alien spacecraft was following the comet — covered up, of course, by NASA and the astronomical community. Though the claim was refuted by astronomers (and could be refuted by anyone with a good telescope), the rumors were publicized on Art Bell's paranormal radio talk show "Coast to Coast AM." These claims inspired a San Diego UFO cult named Heaven's Gate to conclude that the world would end soon. The world did indeed end for 39 of the cult members, who committed suicide on March 26, 1997.

Ah, the Irish and the Irish-blooded will be drinking their Guinesses, and Kilkennies and whiskeys deep this night as they sing songs of a battles lost, heroes martyred, whiskey plundered, potatoes ungrown, and women’s hearts stolen. Nothing becomes an Irishman more than defeat and hardship. The Irish (and to a degree the Scots and Welsh) remember more the battles they lost than the victors do who won them. This proud tradition carries on in the Scots and Irish descendants in Southern America where old swords still hang above fireplaces and a long ago lost war is vividly remembered.

Apolinario Chile Pixtun is tired of being bombarded with frantic questions about the Mayan calendar supposedly "running out" on Dec. 21, 2012. After all, it's not the end of the world.
Or is it?
Definitely not, the Mayan Indian elder insists. "I came back from England last year and, man, they had me fed up with this stuff."
It can only get worse for him. Next month Hollywood's "2012" opens in cinemas, featuring earthquakes, meteor showers and a tsunami dumping an aircraft carrier on the White House.
At Cornell University, Ann Martin, who runs the "Curious? Ask an Astronomer" Web site, says people are scared.
"It's too bad that we're getting e-mails from fourth-graders who are saying that they're too young to die," Martin said. "We had a mother of two young children who was afraid she wouldn't live to see them grow up."
Chile Pixtun, a Guatemalan, says the doomsday theories spring from Western, not Mayan ideas.
A significant time period for the Mayas does end on the date, and enthusiasts have found a series of astronomical alignments they say coincide in 2012, including one that happens roughly only once every 25,800 years.
But most archaeologists, astronomers and Maya say the only thing likely to hit Earth is a meteor shower of New Age philosophy, pop astronomy, Internet doomsday rumors and TV specials such as one on the History Channel which mixes "predictions" from Nostradamus and the Mayas and asks: "Is 2012 the year the cosmic clock finally winds down to zero days, zero hope?"
It may sound all too much like other doomsday scenarios of recent decades - the 1987 Harmonic Convergence, the Jupiter Effect or "Planet X." But this one has some grains of archaeological basis.
One of them is Monument Six.
Found at an obscure ruin in southern Mexico during highway construction in the 1960s, the stone tablet almost didn't survive; the site was largely paved over and parts of the tablet were looted.
It's unique in that the remaining parts contain the equivalent of the date 2012. The inscription describes something that is supposed to occur in 2012 involving Bolon Yokte, a mysterious Mayan god associated with both war and creation.
However - shades of Indiana Jones - erosion and a crack in the stone make the end of the passage almost illegible.
Archaeologist Guillermo Bernal of Mexico's National Autonomous University interprets the last eroded glyphs as maybe saying, "He will descend from the sky."
Spooky, perhaps, but Bernal notes there are other inscriptions at Mayan sites for dates far beyond 2012 - including one that roughly translates into the year 4772.
And anyway, Mayas in the drought-stricken Yucatan peninsula have bigger worries than 2012.
"If I went to some Mayan-speaking communities and asked people what is going to happen in 2012, they wouldn't have any idea," said Jose Huchim, a Yucatan Mayan archaeologist. "That the world is going to end? They wouldn't believe you. We have real concerns these days, like rain."
The Mayan civilization, which reached its height from 300 A.D. to 900 A.D., had a talent for astronomy
Its Long Count calendar begins in 3,114 B.C., marking time in roughly 394-year periods known as Baktuns. Thirteen was a significant, sacred number for the Mayas, and the 13th Baktun ends around Dec. 21, 2012.
"It's a special anniversary of creation," said David Stuart, a specialist in Mayan epigraphy at the University of Texas at Austin. "The Maya never said the world is going to end, they never said anything bad would happen necessarily, they're just recording this future anniversary on Monument Six."
Bernal suggests that apocalypse is "a very Western, Christian" concept projected onto the Maya, perhaps because Western myths are "exhausted."
If it were all mythology, perhaps it could be written off.

Also discusses Nostradamus and the CERN LHC particle accelerator creating a Black Hole or Strangelet Doomsday. A prophecy of French prophet Nostradamus, 9 44, may predict the CERN Large Hadron Collider LHC proton particle accelerator being built near Geneva on the France Swiss border may produce a black hole or strangelet particle that could swallow earth or cause some other great disaster. RAYPOZ in Century 9 Number 44 may refer to the positive ray of the LHC. Could this be a Doomsday Machine? Could this cause the December 21 2012 Mayan calendar prophecy destruction of earth? Did Nostradamus warn us from 400 years ago about creating a Doomsday Machine with the CERN LHC? The LHC will be turned on again later in 2009, possibly near 9-9-09. If there are a lot of volcanos and earthquakes later in 2010 - 2012 after CERN cranks up the LHC, then it may mean a CERN created Black Hole is eating earth's core, collapsing the earth from within as the core disappears. Nothing can be done then, if a Black Hole has been created and has gone to the center of the earth, which it will do because it is heavier than anything on earth, earth will be on its way to a Black Hole or Strangelet Doomsday within a few years, the earth's crust will crack like an egg shell. This could be the cause of the prophesied December 21 2012 Mayan calendar Doomsday. I know I will be called a "kook" because of this video talking about Nostradamus, but there are respected scientists who are concerned about CERN destroying earth by creating a Black Hole or Strangelet. Read about it, search for articles on search engines by typing "Black Hole Doomsday", tell your friends and family about this.
