from the NY times:
Over the past few days, tens of thousands of Kikuyus, the tribe of Kenya's president, have packed into heavily guarded buses to flee the western part of the country because of ethnic violence. On Sunday, endless convoys of buses - some with their windshields smashed by rocks - crawled across a landscape of scorched homes and empty farms.
It is nothing short of a mass exodus. The tribe that has dominated business and politics in Kenya since independence in 1963 is now being chased off its land by machete-wielding mobs made up of members of other tribes furious about the Dec. 27 election, which Kenya's president, Mwai Kibaki, won under dubious circumstances. In some places, Kikuyus have been hunted down with bows and arrows.
The hospital in Nakuru, a town in the Rift Valley, is full of Kikuyu men with deep ax wounds, fingers cut off and slash marks across their faces.from the NY times:

If at first you don't succeed try, try again. That's the battle cry from Kenya's opposition party, who will attempt to rally in protest over the disputed election results for the 3rd time. Thousands of police in Kenya have been deployed in Nairobi to prevent this rally once more.
It is not surprising that people are having difficultly getting to the rally. Blogflict has been in touch with a resident of Kenya who reports to us that transportation is extremely limited if not frozen in many parts of the country. Our source also informed us, 'the dreaded GSU police were in there hundreds yesterday at the venue of the rally and hundreds more deployed to the city estates to stop guys from leaving their houses or even to gather around.'
'We are trying to go to Uhuru Park today,' said Joshua Okoth, standing with a group of young men by the smoking remains of a former food market.
'Let people die and then there will be a change,' said Okoth.
Reports of violence, looting and fires were sporadic in Nairobi's sprawling slums, including Kibera, from which residents had left en masse to Uhuru Park.
Video from Nairobi's outskirts showed streets littered with broken glass, overturned Coca-Cola crates and, in some places, fires. One man carried a sign that read: 'Shame on you Kibaki you raped our democracy.'
Meanwhile, childrens' bodies piled up in a Nairobi morgue, churches burned and police on horseback chased pedestrians through the streets. Estimates are that the violence has now taken over 300 lives. If at first you don't succeed try, try again. That's the battle cry from... more

After the week of rioting and chaos in Kenya, an independent investigation into the results of the presidential election has been requested.
Amos Wako, a close ally of the Kenyan president Mwai Kibaki, has warned that Kenya is
"quickly degenerating into a catastrophe of unimaginable proportions".
He went onto say that the review of the voting is necessary and that "a proper tally of the valid certificates returned and confirmed should be undertaken immediately on a priority basis by an agreed and independent person or body."
Doubts over whether the review will be accepted by the Governemnt are high, after Kikabi
made no mention of the proposed action in his press conference yesterday. He also accused the opposition of encouraging the chaos by saying he is "deeply disturbed by the senseless violence instigated by some leaders."
It seems the situation in Kenya is still volatile, with planned protest marches for Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement been rescheduled for today after the rally he had planned for a park in central Nairobi yesterday was cancelled, due to police blockades of all roads into town. After the week of rioting and chaos in Kenya, an independent investigation into the... more

Supporters of Ralia Odinga have been told to go home. The rally for today has been canceled after tear gas and water cannons were fired at the gathering crowd.
The protesters were to attend a 'million-man' rally that many fear could worsen the violence that has already killed 300 people and displaced 100,000.
Supporters and leaders of Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement had been blocked from getting to the rally in Nairobi's city center by government forces who used tear gas and water cannon to disperse the crowds.
'We are a peaceful people who do not want violence,' William Ruto, a top official with presidential candidate Raila Odinga's party told The Associated Press. 'That is why we are peacefully dispersing now.'

Kenyan police have fired tear gas and water cannon against protesters trying to attend a banned rally against the re-election of President Mwai Kibaki. The Kenyan opposition leader, Raila Odinga, has called for a million people to gather in Nairobi's Uhuru Park. Mr Odinga told the BBC the rally was a "defining moment" for Kenya.
The political and ethnic violence in Kenya has already left as many as 300 people dead and displaced 100,000. Odinga accuses President Mwai Kibaki of stealing the East African country's highly contested December 27 vote.
