Matt Damon, one of Barack Obama's earliest supporters and once one of his most staunch advocates, slammed the President in the new issue of Elle Magazine.
"I've talked to a lot of people who worked for Obama at the grassroots level. One of them said to me, 'Never again. I will never be fooled again by a politician,'" Damon tells the magazine. "You know, a one-term president with some balls who actually got stuff done would have been, in the long run of the country, much better."
Referring to the Occupy Wall Street movement, Damon continued: "If the Democrats think that they didn't have a mandate -- people are literally without any focus or leadership, just wandering out into the streets to yell right now because they are so pissed off ... Imagine if they had a leader."
That echoes the President's own words to Diane Sawyer in March of 2010 when he said, "I'd rather be a really good one-term president than a mediocre two-term president... There's a tendency in Washington to think that our job description, of elected officials, is to get reelected. That's not our job description. Our job description is to solve problems and to help people."

The Union Leader newspaper, an influential voice in state politics, today ran a scathing front-page editorial reminding Obama that voters rejected him in the state's 2008 primary in favor of Hillary Clinton.

Obama is getting a chilling welcome on his first visit to New Hampshire today, the first one in two years. The Union Leader's editorial is a signal to Obama that they are not happy with him at all.
In the last paragraph of the article it states; "Here is hoping that seven weeks from today, primary voters here will put the nation on a path to unseating this glib, clueless disaster of a President."The Union Leader newspaper, an influential voice in state politics, today ran a... more

Corruption isn't uniquely Republican. This liberal group's ploy reeks of vote-buying. I don't think any politician can be trusted, nor can individuals with an agenda. If we want elections that are representative of the people, it seems that we'd have a bipartisan group to oversee the vote-counting process. That fact that this liberal group is buying these posts with uncapped donations does little to curb my concerns.
With all of the uproar about what's happening in WI, I would expect to see people as outraged at this, but sadly, people don't seem to mind when the corruption serves their own interests.
"A small tax-exempt political group with ties to wealthy liberals like billionaire financier George Soros has quietly helped elect 11 reform-minded progressive Democrats as secretaries of state to oversee the election process in battleground states and keep Republican 'political operatives from deciding who can vote and how those votes are counted.'
Known as the Secretary of State Project (SOSP), the organization was formed by liberal activists in 2006 to put Democrats in charge of state election offices, where key decisions often are made in close races on which ballots are counted and which are not.
The group’s website said it wants to stop Republicans from 'manipulating' election results.
'Any serious commitment to wresting control of the country from the Republican Party must include removing their political operatives from deciding who can vote and whose votes will count,' the group said on its website, accusing some Republican secretaries of state of making 'partisan decisions.'..."

Public health, tourism and the environment in Florida suffered a major loss this week when the federal government put the protection of state waters back into the hands of the very people who have polluted them — big business and its enablers in Tallahassee. In a letter to the state, the Environmental Protection Agency dropped its effort to adopt clean water standards for Florida following 13 years of foot-dragging by state officials. This is either Washington's way to force the state's hand or a decision by the Obama administration not to alienate Florida in the run-up to the 2012 election. Either way, it's a risky game of chicken with a governor and a state Legislature that have shown no regard for the environment and clean water.
A brief history: The federal government told the states in 1998 to limit nutrient pollution in rivers, lakes and coastal areas by 2004 or it would do the job for them. But 2004 came and went. Florida environmental groups sued in 2008 seeking to compel the EPA to intervene under the Clean Water Act. The agency settled the case in 2009 under an agreement it would draft the standards for Florida. After 11 years of stalling, new rules were on the way and expected this year. Then Monday, after howls of complaints from business groups and state lawmakers, the EPA said it would give Florida another chance. The agency did not agree to preapproving any rules or to surrendering its rulemaking authority entirely. But it agreed to give Florida the time to write new clean water standards of its own.
This concession was as close to an all-out surrender as they come, and it's a shame EPA lost its nerve in the face of a massive disinformation campaign. State leaders and business interests hijacked the debate by ponying up inflated estimates for what it would cost to clean up Florida's waters. The EPA agreed to a host of loopholes — exempting entire industrial operations from the clean water rules, creating a waiver process and dragging out enforcement. Still, the state went to court to protect the biggest polluters. For this, Florida gets rewarded with another chance?

I wonder if as the presidentail elections get closer Obama won't just move toward the center but skate quietly to the right, just enough to gain some votes in that wing but perhaps not loud enough to wake up his supporters from the dreams and promises of yesteryear?
I understand that Obama has accomplished somethings in spite of the GOP's ideological, almost homicidal opposition, but you have to remember that he followed bush as president, and, well, that's not a tough act to follow: cleaning up the mess he left sure was . But there are major issues on which he (Obama) has not delivered: Guantanamo, wiretapping. . .
And, anyway, was he really, really, ever a little bit to the left, I mean, not when pandering for votes, but on real principle and beliefs?
I have to admit I don't know much about Jeb b..bus....bu.....bush! (my skin crawls just at the sight of that last name and I can hardly pronounce it without feeling dirty!)
I don't know too much about that person, so I would like to know what you think.
My mind is always thirsty for new knowledge and I welcome your opinions and corrections!
Here' s a piece of the article:
"President Obama continued his efforts to move to the political center on his trip to Florida -- to the point of invoking Republican Jeb Bush's name at a Democratic fundraiser, drawing catcalls in the process.
"No, no, no, no, now," Obama said Friday night, drawing laughter from the crowd at the Fontainebleau Resort in Miami. "I know this is not a name you often hear at Florida Democratic fundraisers."
And the rest can be found here:

By signing the Solar Bill of Rights, you can join thousands of other Americans in urging lawmakers in Washington to give the U.S. solar industry a fair competitive environment. Solar energy is a clean, reliable energy source that is creating tens of thousands of American jobs that can’t be exported. The solar industry is ready to power America now, but we need the right policies in place to deploy more solar, sooner. The eight rights below outline what our nation needs to create a policy environment that allows solar to compete on a level playing field with fossil fuel sources.

"Corporations are not people. Money is not speech." These are fundamental truths that our nation needs to remember -- and add to the Constitution.
May 1, 2010 |
A rogue Supreme Court seems hellbent on establishing a corporate oligarchy. Congress can’t stop it. Every time Congress or state legislatures tries to curb the power of billionaires or mega corporations the Court slaps them down.
Citizens United v. FEC, the recent Supreme Court decision that allowed corporations to spend unlimited sums of money to influence elections is only the most recent step in this process. There will be more. But the shocking decision may be sufficient to galvanize a political movement that can change the rules and ensure our democracy.
We can save our country by adding eight words to the fundamental law of the land, the US Constitution. "Corporations are not persons." "Money is not speech."
Such a development is not without precedent. Once before a political movement has changed the Constitution to nurture democracy. The populist uprising of the late 20th century led to the passage, in rapid succession of the 16th Amendment in 1913 that allowed for an income tax, the 17th Amendment, ratified the same year that required the direct election of Senators and in 1920 the 19th Amendment that gave women the right to vote.
A campaign to strip corporations of personhood would have a similar populist and popular appeal. A recent Quinnipiac poll reveals a whopping 79 percent public disapproval of the Court’s ruling. A Washington Post-ABC News poll puts the figure even higher at 81 percent. And as Dan Eggen of the Post writes, "The poll reveals relatively little difference of opinion on the issue among Democrats (85 percent opposed to the ruling), Republicans (76 percent) and independents (81 percent)."
But win or lose, a campaign against corporate personhood would allow us to regain control of a narrative we lost in 1980 when Ronald Reagan declared in his Inaugural Address, "government is the problem" and initiated a process that has resulted in the greatest concentration of private wealth and power in American history.
People may not know exactly what Goldman Sachs is, but they know it is not a person. A person doesn’t have unlimited life or limited liability. A person is responsible for her decisions. If she makes a decision that kills or maims people she will go to jail. If a CEO makes such a decision she, at worst, receives a golden parachute.
Unlike a real person, a corporation lacks a conscience. It is guided neither by ethics nor morality but rather by laws that required its Boards to elevate the maximization of profits above all other concerns.
A real person is an independent actor, subject to many influences that affect how he votes. Warren Buffett, for example, thinks it is in his and society’s best interest for him to be required to pay more taxes. A corporation that made this decision could be taken to court by its stockholders.
In his The Theory of Moral Sentiments Adam Smith’s first, and in his own mind more important work than Wealth of Nations, he outlined his view of the institutions that make men virtuous. He focused on the inherent human qualities of gratitude and sympathy and empathy that lead to a merging of our self-interest with the public good. To Adam Smith, that was the real invisible hand. A corporation lacks sympathy or empathy although occasionally it might express gratitude in the form of increased financial contributions to politicians who do its bidding.

The Senate voted Thursday to block the annual cost-of-living adjustment for members of Congress in 2011.
The measure (S 3244), sponsored by Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wis., passed by voice vote. It would continue a congressional pay freeze in place for 2010. According to Feingold, the normal cost-of-living adjustment would give senators a $1,600 raise in the 2011 calendar year.
"Not many Americans have the power to give themselves a raise whenever they want, no matter how they are performing," Feingold said, "Yet Congress has set up a system whereby every year members automatically get a pay increase without having to lift a finger."
Senators standing on the floor when Feingold called up his bill quickly asked to added as cosponsors of the measure. With the nation's unemployment rate hovering near 10 percent, few want to be seen as reaching for a pay increase.
President Obama's proposed budget for fiscal 2011 would allow a $2 million increase in spending on salaries for lawmakers, but House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer, D-Md., indicated shortly after the budget came out that his chamber was likely to retain the current pay freeze for 2011.
Rank-and-file members receive annual salaries of $174,000. Top leaders get more.
Feingold pledged Thursday to push the House to consider his measure, while indicating that his long-term goal remains ending the automatic increases permanently.
"I'll keep fighting so that in the future the burden will be on those who want a pay raise, not on those who want to block one, to pass legislation," he said. The Senate voted Thursday to block the annual cost-of-living adjustment for members... more
