Follow the Money Mark...tales from LAMC

Mark Ramos-Nishita, better known as Money Mark, walks through the Roosevelt Hotel with a small Casio keyboard under his arm. The instrument, circa 1987, pre-dates his time with the Beastie Boys, who he’s written, produced and performed with since 1989. It’s also followed him as he’s produced Plastilina Mosh, Kinky and Hello Seahorse! as well as when he’s composed for movies like “Blow” starring Johnny Depp.

The eclectic experimentalist has had a long music career – with both fond and funny memories. Although he has a hard time choosing a favorite, one of the most memorable was getting a lemon meringue pie to the face while playing in Switzerland with the Beastie Boys.

“It took them maybe 30 minutes to get up to the front,” says Mark. “I think they were trying to hit Adam, but the Beastie Boys are always running around…the pie went flying through the air and I kind of ran into it. It was actually entertaining.”

The self-proclaimed musical encyclopedia is based in LA and says music has always been a part of his life. His mom is a Tejana singer, his grandfather was a violinist, his uncles were guitar players and his father grew up in Hawaii and played the ukulele. He got his start on the family piano, studied theatre and music, and will put his experience and creativity to good use on a solo album he’ll release this fall.

“I actually put an ad on Craigslist for people who are trying to get rid of their broken pianos,” says Mark. “I have these pianos that are in my yard and I just dismantled them and I’m taking the harps and the strings to do something with it…I don’t even know yet. Everything is an experiment. Who’s to say what’s coming next?”

But the one sure thing on his agenda is producing a Latin alternative super band called Boom Segundo, a side project for artists like Camilo Lara from the Mexican Institute of Sound, Julieta Venegas and Denise from Hello Seahorse! He’ll also be producing more artists like Hello Seahorse! and writing music for an Aaron Rose documentary - as part of the Levi’s “Go Forth” campaign - on a Pennsylvania town trying to recover from the collapse of the steel mill industry and a crack cocaine habit that’s plagued the area since the 80s. Presently, you can catch him on stage with the Mexican Institute of Sound.

Beastie Boys are an American hip hop group from New York City. The group comprises Michael "Mike D" Diamond, Adam "MCA" Yauch, and Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz. Since around the time of the Hello Nasty album, the DJ for the group has been Michael "Mix Master Mike" Schwartz, who was first featured in the song "Three MCs and One DJ".Beastie Boys began as a hardcore punk group in 1979, appeared on the compilation cassette New York Thrash with Riot Fight and Beastie, and released their debut EP in 1982. After achieving moderate local success with the 1983 release of experimental hip-hop 12" Cooky Puss, they switched to hip-hop in 1984 and a string of successful 12" singles followed culminating with their debut album Licensed to Ill (1986) which enjoyed international critical acclaim and commercial success. The group is well-known for its eclecticism, jocular and flippant attitude toward interviews and interviewers, obscure cultural references and kitschy lyrics, and for performing in outlandish matching suits.They are one of the longest lived hip-hop acts worldwide and continue to enjoy commercial and critical success in 2009, more than 25 years after the release of their debut album. On September 27, 2007, they were nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2009, the group released digitally remastered deluxe editions of their albums Paul's Boutique, Check Your Head', Ill Communication and Hello Nasty.

Beastie Boy Adam Yauch Gives Cancer Update

Beastie Boys' Adam Yauch, a.k.a. MCA, sent an email blast this morning, Aug. 5, updating his health status following surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his parotid gland, the discovery of which caused the cancellation of the band's scheduled concert appearances behind their recently completed album, Hot Sauce Committee. You can read the email below.

The update contains positive news and follows up on the good vibes sent his way at last weekend's All Points West festival, when Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs wore a "Get Well MCA" armband and Jay-Z and Coldplay covered the Boys' classics "No Sleep Till Brooklyn" (the former) and "Fight For Your Right" (the latter) to honor the band, who were originally slated as fest's headliner.

Read Yauch's letter below. Thankfully, it sounds like the dude's doing okay all things considered:

hey all,

hope you are doing well.

so i'm about a week and a half out of surgery now and rapidly recovering from it. i haven't taken any of the pain meds, which supposedly speeds along the healing process, or should i say, taking them slows it down. anyway, i spent 1 night at the hospital after the surgery. the hospital was too crazy to get any rest so i headed home to relax, have home cooked food and hang out with the family.

i'm pretty well detoxed from the anesthesia that they pumped me up with to keep me under for all that time. that took several days to get out of my system. my neck and jaw are still pretty stiff from the surgery, but it gets better everyday. had the stitches out this past monday... so things are moving along.

but no sooner am i on the mend from this first torture than are they lining up the next one. the next line of treatment will be radiation. that involves blasting you with some kind of beam for a few minutes a day, 5 days a week, for about 7 weeks. that will start in a few weeks...

saw the jay-z cover of no sleep, and the coldplay one of fight for your right from APW on youtube. good shit. and i heard karen o wore a "get well MCA" armband, and that q-tip gave a shout out too..... very kind of them.

just wanted to thank them and everyone else who sent positive thoughts my way. i do think that all of the well wishes have contributed to the fact that my treatment and recovery are going well.
