"Make a list of all the environmental and social problems that today afflict us and our poor battered planet. - not just the extinction of species and animals and plants, that fifty years ago was the first signs of impending global disaster, but traffic congestion, oil prices, pressure on the health service , the growth of mega-cities, migration patterns, immigration policies, unemployment, the loss of arable land, desertification, famine, increasingly violent weather, the acidification of the oceans, the collapse of fish stocks, rising sea temperatures, the loss of rain forest. The list goes on and on. But they all share an underlying cause. Every one of these global problems, environmental as well as social becomes more difficult - and ultimately impossible - to solve with ever more people." - Sir David Attenborough"Make a list of all the environmental and social problems that today afflict us... more

Suzy Dean takes government intervention on alcohol to task in this spikey on the sofa discussion. Are we incapable of deciding for ourselves or with our peers what, when, where and how much we drink? Do the army of advisors and advice from students unions to health professionals see us all as out of control victims of the demon drink and treat us like children? Should our social lives be controlled by the new temperance police and is it any of the state’s business what we consume? Suzy is clear the alcohol police will harm more than our livers, but not everyone agrees.Suzy Dean takes government intervention on alcohol to task in this spikey on the sofa... more

Limits
When we run out
Is running out the limit
Or is it the beginning
Of something else
If we run out of food
If we run out of water
If we run out of oil
Is that a limit
When’s the last time
You ran out of gas
Did it every cross your mind
That we all could run out of gas
Is running out of gas a limit
Is running out of time a limit
Is running out of luck a limit
Is running out of earth a limit
Is it time to start thinking
In terms of limits
Or do we keep going
The way we are going now
Is there any limit to us
Is there any limit to our multiplying
Is there any reason
To be worried about our limitsLimits
When we run out
Is running out the limit
Or is it the beginning

For the first time in two decades, federal wildlife managers will take a look at how they administer the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, including the possibility of asking Congress to make 1.5 million acres of the long-disputed coastal plain off limits to oil and gas development by designating it as wilderness.
Although the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's announcement comes less than a week after President Barack Obama's decision to halt drilling in some offshore areas in Alaska and allow it in others, the timing is coincidental.
Bruce Woods, the Alaska spokesman for the service, said all U.S. refuges are supposed to revamp their master plans every 15 years, and the ANWR plan is overdue.
"It's been more than 20 years, and it's time to sit back and say 'are we doing this in the most effective way possible?'" he said.
All aspects of the refuge's management are up for discussion, Woods said. The Fish and Wildlife Service will hold public meetings throughout Alaska during the next two months, and it's expected to issue a draft plan in February 2011.

Vancouver is recommending traffic laws be changed to require such cars to stay on the right-hand side of the street except when turning left or passing. The province had previously restricted the cars - which legally can't drive faster than 40 km/h - to streets with speed limits less than this limit, but municipalities are allowed to alter this rule.Vancouver is recommending traffic laws be changed to require such cars to stay on the... more

An influential Republican senator suggested Thursday that Congress might want to consider reimposing a national speed limit to save gasoline and possibly ease fuel prices.
Sen. John Warner, R-Va., asked Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman to look into what speed limit would provide optimum gasoline efficiency given current technology. He said he wants to know if the administration might support efforts in Congress to require a lower speed limit.
Congress in 1974 set a national 55 mph speed limit because of energy shortages caused by the Arab oil embargo. The speed limit was repealed in 1995 when crude oil dipped to $17 a barrel and gasoline cost $1.10 a gallon.
As motorists headed on trips for this Fourth of July weekend, gasoline averaged $4.10 a gallon nationwide with oil hovering around $145 a barrel.
Warner cited studies that showed the 55 mph speed limit saved 167,000 barrels of oil a day, or 2 percent of the country's highway fuel consumption, while avoiding up to 4,000 traffic deaths a year.An influential Republican senator suggested Thursday that Congress might want to... more

Popular UK pub chain J.D Wetherspoons have unveiled plans that parents who are out with their children will be limited to two alcoholic drinks.
The new rules have been introduced as the company are uncomfortable with children being on the premises for long lengths of time due to a lack of playing facilities.
The rule may also stretch as far as parent's even being refused soft drinks or coffee to curtail their stay.
This seems a little over the top to me, if adults are sitting in pubs all day with their kids then they should have their kids taken away, not just having their drinks curbed.
