Soaring food prices that have sparked unrest across the globe are likely to persist despite an expected increase in production, threatening millions of people worldwide who live on a dollar or less a day, a U.N. agency said Friday.
Prices of bread, rice, milk, oil and other basic foodstuffs have sharply increased in the past months in many developing countries, according to a report by the Rome-based Food and Agriculture Organization. Prices of wheat and rice have doubled compared to last year, while those of maize are more than a third higher.
Cereal prices have risen as a result of steady demand, especially from China and India, supply shortages and new export restrictions, FAO said.

Steadily rising food costs aren't just causing grocery shoppers to do a double-take at the checkout line — they're also changing the very ways we feed our families.
The worst case of food inflation in nearly 20 years has more Americans giving up restaurant meals to eat at home. We're buying fewer luxury food items, eating more leftovers and buying more store brands instead of name-brand items.
Overall, food prices rose nearly 5 percent in 2007, according to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. U.S. Record-high energy, corn and wheat prices in the past year have led to sticker shock in the grocery aisles. At $1.32, the average price of a loaf of bread has increased 32 percent since January 2005. In the last year alone, the average price of carton of eggs has increased almost 50 percent.
Among retailers, the surge in commodity prices — from corn, now in high demand because of increased ethanol production, to wheat that has tripled in price over the past 10 months — has some industry observers suggesting that higher food prices aren't a temporary fluctuation but instead may be here to stay.

Growing populations in India and China consuming more meat from animals that are grain fed, and using more to make biofuels. Two reasons why the cost of food will continue to rise this year. Tell me where the moral epiphany has happened? We simply cannot continue the population increases we are seeing while destroying rainforest for beef and using corn to run our cars. What will it take to see this? Growing populations in India and China consuming more meat from animals that are grain... more
