The San Francisco Bay Area is luck to have one of the premium film festival anywhere ad it's here in our own backyard. The fact that the International consistently present some of the most inspired, interesting and cutting edge films is the reason it is "the oldest continuously running film festival in the Americas."
Organized by the San Francisco Film Society, the International is held each spring for two weeks, presenting an average of 150 films from all over the globe. The film society describes itself as an organization that “encourages the progressive evolution of film culture and individual lives by celebrating the transformative power of the moving image in all its forms.”... but that's only the beginning...... more

In Meek's Cutoff, Zoe Kazan plays Millie Gately -- wife to her real-life boyfriend Paul Dano. The Gatelys represent the upper class of the three families being led by guide Stephen Meeks through the Oregon Trail, and therefore have the largest wagon and the most possessions -- including a bird in a cage -- but as time presses on, those prior luxuries mean less and less. As it becomes more clear that they're lost and with dwindling water supplies, Millie becomes more afraid, no more so than when the group takes a Native American hostage. Can he lead them to water, or is he leading them into danger as retaliation? Kazan talks about whether her character has a reason to panic, and how her portrayal connects to an earlier role.In Meek's Cutoff, Zoe Kazan plays Millie Gately -- wife to her real-life... more

It's rare for the hero of a Western to be a woman, but with Meek's Cutoff, Emily Tetherow (played by Michelle Williams) is a woman to be reckoned with. Part of a group of pioneers on the Oregon Trail, she expresses her displeasure over their guide, Stephen Meeks, when it appears he's gotten them all lost in the desert, with few supplies. "Is he ignorant, or just plain evil?" she asks. "That's my quandary." When Meeks captures a Native American, Tetherow prevents the group from killing him, since he might be able to lead them to water, and later helps sew up his tattered moccasin. "I want him to owe me something," she explains. Williams talks about her unconventional character, and how Meek's Cutoff connects to Brokeback Mountain. It's rare for the hero of a Western to be a woman, but with Meek's Cutoff,... more

Three families go off into the desert with a guide who promises he knows a shortcut through the mountains -- but gets them lost instead. That's the premise behind the historical drama Meek's Cutoff, starring Michelle Williams, Will Patton, Shirley Henderson, Zoe Kazan, and Paul Dano as the pioneers stranded on the Oregon Trail. Directed by Kelly Reichardt (Wendy and Lucy, Old Joy), the film is quiet and slow, depicting the daily labors of a group of people trying to make their way west, dependent on an unreliable guide -- not your typical Western. Reichardt talks about why she took on this project, and the pioneer boot camp she made her actors do.Three families go off into the desert with a guide who promises he knows a shortcut... more

Like his co-star Michelle Williams, Ryan Gosling has already snagged a Golden Globe nomination for his performance in Blue Valentine -- could an Oscar nod be next? After an initial snag with the ratings board, the film hit theaters on the last day to qualify for awards consideration, and is already generating quite the buzz, not the least for its two lead performers, who play a couple falling in and out of love. Gosling likens it to a love autopsy.

Michelle Williams has already snared a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress for her role in Blue Valentine -- a film which originally won a NC-17 rating for its truthful depiction of a marriage falling apart, only to be overtuned with a more realistic R -- and if the buzz is to be believed, she'll have an Oscar nomination next. The film takes place in two times, the past (shot on film) and the present (shot on the RED camera), which were interwoven as a narrative but shot sequentially. Williams said the hard part wasn't pretending to fall in love with Ryan Gosling -- but falling out of it.
