Great video ... a friend of mine sent me a link to this video.
http://paragonist.blogspot.com/2011/05/arranged-marriages-in-india.html
From the western countries point of view, this video offers an interesting perspective on marriage. Perhaps, the western countries can discover a whole new theory from our India. A little tradition can go a long way towards creating stability in a culture ... perhaps :-)
Though, the figures in the video are a bit of an exaggeration. These days not 90% of the marriages in India are arranged marriages, the correct figure would be around 65-70%, and the divorce percentage is also around 10-12%.
Eventually this gives the clear idea about 'arranged marriage' to the outer world :)Great video ... a friend of mine sent me a link to this video.... more

SHE was only 14 when she was forced into marriage with an older man.
Yet within a year of her wedding, Azar Bagheri was charged with adultery and sentenced to be stoned to death.
The sentence could not be carried out until she was 18. So for the past four years, Ms Bagheri has been languishing on death row while the courts waited for her to reach maturity so she could be put to death.SHE was only 14 when she was forced into marriage with an older man.

While we have started to examine this issue, the focus has primarily been on the girl/woman's part. this article from the German on line magazine Spiegel points out the problem of a forced marriage from the male perspective. Since these forced marriages are arraigned by the families the men sometimes have the same emotional problems.
Stories of Turkish girls forced into arranged marriages in Germany are well known. But hardly anyone talks about the men who are forced into marriage -- sometimes harassed, blackmailed or beaten.
Azad will never forget that day in September 2005. It was the day of his wedding in Stuttgart, but for Azad it was filled with hours of shame. "It's really bad, when you have to force yourself to have sex with a relative," says the 20-year-old Kurd. "It's sick. With my first cousin."

For the sake of propriety or for the sake of Sarah Palin's new position as a potential world leader, it looks as if the media is trying to sanitize a sticky situation.

A 16-year-old Saudi girl drank a bottle of bleach in an attempt to commit suicide to escape a forced marriage to a 75-year-old man, press reports revealed Sunday.
The girl identified only as, Shaikha, said her father was forcing her to marry the old man so that he could marry his 13-year-old daughter in an exchange deal, Bahrain's Tribune reported.
Shaikha described how her father took her to meet the old man and his 13-year-old in a marriage office where they all had pre-marital tests done, the Tribune quoted the Saudi Gazette as reporting.
Shaikha told the paper how she begged and pleaded not to be forced into marriage but both of the men ignored her pleas.

Thought I'd post this story from a British newspaper since there's a huge problem in the UK with young Muslim girls, particularly from Pakistan, being spirited away and forced into arranged marriages, after which many are abused. The English government has been forced to enact laws to protect these girls since the problem is so widespread. I wonder if this is an issue here in the US too, but one which our media is largely ignoring due to the comparative size of England's Pakistani population which is much larger than America's?Thought I'd post this story from a British newspaper since there's a huge... more

Exploring the issues of art and marriage in India, "In Her Own Footsteps" is the story of Sheeba, a beautiful and talented Indian dancer. Many female artists in India must stop performing after marriage if the husband decides against it. Eighty percent of Indian marriages are arranged, so a female artist may choose not to marry at all, but Sheeba was able to avoid this fate by marrying for love--against her parents wishes. Her husband Manish is a loving man from a different caste and religion who supports Sheeba in dance and in life. Ironically, Sheeba's mother, who taught her everything she knows, was not so lucky in her own marriage to Sheeba's tabla-playing father.Exploring the issues of art and marriage in India, "In Her Own Footsteps" is... more

Update to an earlier story I posted about an 8 year old girl in Yemen that took her family's arranged marriage for her to court... She won!
"I am happy that I am divorced now. I will be able to go back to school,'' Nojud Mohammed Ali said, after a public hearing in Sanaa's court of first instance.
Her former husband, 28-year-old Faez Ali Thameur, said he married the child "with her consent and that of her parents'' but that he did not object to her divorce petition.

A national helpline for victims of forced marriages and so-called honour violence has been launched.
The Honour Network was unveiled by Home Office Minister Vernon Coaker at a conference in Stoke-on-Trent.
The 24-hour service, which will be staffed by women who have had similar experiences, will allow victims to get advice and discuss their feelings.
The government has given £15,000 to the start-up cost of the national network.
The joint Foreign and Commonwealth/Home Office Forced Marriage Unit was set up in 2005 and handles 5,000 enquiries and up to 400 cases per year. A national helpline for victims of forced marriages and so-called honour violence has... more

An eight-year-old girl decided last week to go the Sana’a West Court to prosecute her father, who forced her to marry a 30-year-old man.
Nojoud Muhammed Nasser arrived at court by herself on Wednesday, April 2, looking for a judge to handle her case against her father, Muhammed Nasser, who forced her two months ago to marry Faez Ali Thamer, a man 22 years her senior. The child also asked for a divorce, accusing her husband of sexual and domestic abuse.
“My father beat me and told me that I must marry this man, and if I did not, I would be raped and no law and no sheikh in this country would help me. I refused but I couldn’t stop the marriage,” Nojoud Nasser told the Yemen Times. “I asked and begged my mother, father, and aunt to help me to get divorced. They answered, ‘We can do nothing. If you want you can go to court by yourself.’ So this is what I have done,” she said.

Coroners also stated that 17-year old Ahmed was the victim of a 'very vile murder'. It has been speculated that the law student's refusal to participate in an arranged marriage contributed to her death. Her body was found washed up on the shore at Kendal, a few miles from her home, in September 2004. Coroners also stated that 17-year old Ahmed was the victim of a 'very vile... more
