Wofford College used a stifling defense to overcome a long second-half scoring drought to beat Appalachian State University 56-51 on Monday night for the Southern Conference Title and its first NCAA tournament berth. Wofford College is one of the smallest schools playing Division I basketball, with fewer than 1500 students (half of whom are men), and it’s known primarily for its rigorous academic standards.
While relatively few sports fans know very much about Wofford, looking back over this season, the Terriers should have been much more on everyone’s mind. Wofford was one possession away from winning at the University of Pittsburgh in the season opener (they lost by only 3 points), defeated both the University of Georgia and the University of South Carolina from the SEC, and went 15-3 during the regular season in a respected league.
Currently, Wofford is 26-8, winning its 13th straight game and 19 of its last 20 games. So there was a very large crowd of very happy supporters at the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte (NC) last night, and Wofford’s tournament victory led to a giddy dancing and singing celebration on the floor.
With the win, the Terriers have earned the conference’s automatic bid to the 2010 NCAA Tournament. The 2010 men’s basketball selection show will be held Sunday, March 14 at 6:00 p.m. and will be televised on CBS.

BNP and Deutsche Bank have sued Bank of America in federal court in Manhattan. Both accuse Bank of America of breaching its custodial and trustee duties to Ocala. The suits shed light not only on the complexities of the mortgage machine but on how failsafe mechanisms in these byzantine structures didn’t work.
People familiar with the mortgage machine’s innards say problems were industrywide.
“If you look at the way these structures were built up, there were supposed to be safeguards at every step to make sure all these things were done properly,” said O. Max Gardner III, a lawyer in Shelby, N.C., who represents financially troubled consumers. “When you see so many problems across the country with the total inability to produce the documents, then it really makes you wonder: did they really do this?”
According to the court documents, Bank of America dropped a number of balls. It improperly transferred $3.7 billion out of Ocala to accounts that had no connection to the investment vehicle, Deutsche Bank said, and it didn’t track the mortgages bought and sold on behalf of Ocala. Bank of America also misstated the amount of mortgages held as security for Ocala, the suit contends.
Last August, for example, after Taylor Bean failed, Bank of America reported that Deutsche Bank’s investment was secured by mortgages valued at over $1.16 billion. But, Bank of America’s records showed at least $470 million of these mortgages had already been delivered to Freddie Mac, the lawsuit said. Ocala’s trustee “failed to maintain internal documentation necessary to establish Ocala’s ownership of purchased mortgages,” Deutsche Bank maintains.
Asked about the lawsuits, a Bank of America spokesman provided a statement: “We share BNP and Deutsche Bank’s concern about the handling of funds by Taylor, Bean & Whitaker and Colonial Bank and have been actively pursuing recoveries in the Colonial and TBW bankruptcies on behalf of these and other investors in the Ocala facility.”

From the article..."A US Marine was arrested today at Logan International Airport after federal airport screeners discovered a gun, bomb-making materials, and ammunition in his checked baggage, State Police and Transportation Security Administration officials said.
Corporal Justin Reed, 22, of Jacksonville, N.C., was booked on US Airways Flight 877 to Charlotte, N.C., said TSA spokeswoman Ann Davis. She said Reed had arrived on a flight from Las Vegas this morning.
TSA screeners in Terminal B called State Police at 7:10 a.m. after a screen discovered the following items in his checked baggage: a locked handgun box containing a semi-automatic handgun, a fully loaded gun magazine, several boxes of 9 mm and 7.62 mm ammunition, three model rocket engines containing an explosive mixture, military pull-type fuses, switches, electronics kit boxes with various components, and a hand grenade fuse assembly with detonator.
Reed was charged with possession of an infernal machine and possession of a concealed weapon in a secure area of an airport. He was booked at the State Police barracks at Logan and held in lieu of $50,000 bail. He will be arraigned at East Boston Municipal Court on Tuesday.
Davis said it is legal to have a firearm in checked baggage but that it must be declared to security officials. The passenger in this case had not declared the weapon, she said. Davis said all checked baggage on domestic flights is required to be screened by TSA on originating flights.
Reed's bags had to be screened again at Logan because baggage handlers inadvertently routed them to baggage claim instead of onto his connecting flight to Charlotte. Typically bags are not rescreened during a layover, she said.
Davis said TSA was "actively investigating" why the gun and explosive materials were not detected during the screening in Las Vegas.From the article..."A US Marine was arrested today at Logan International Airport... more

The Charlotte region has been awarded $12.6 million in stimulus funds for energy efficiency and conservation projects.
The federal government set aside some $3.2 billion of the $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for U.S. Department of Energy grants. That money can be used for a range of projects, from rebates for home-energy audits to development of renewable-energy projects.
Local governments are also eyeing those funds for green retrofits of public facilities and more efficient traffic signals and streetlights.
The Obama Administration announced Thursday an allocation of $58 million to North Carolina and $31 million to South Carolina for the energy efficiency and conservation block grant program.
The city of Charlotte was awarded the largest share among Carolina cities and counties with an $6.8 million allocation. Mecklenburg County has been allocated $649,500.
Also receiving funds are:
* Concord, $638,800
* Gastonia, $705,700
* Hickory, $209,300
* Huntersville, $175,100
* Kannapolis, $170,300
* Gaston County, $525,600
* Iredell County, $645,100
* Union County, $751,800
* Rock Hill, $630,600
* York County, $586,200
The Catawba Indian Nation was allocated $173,900.
No details have been released yet as to when the funds will be awarded or dispersed. Details on the grant program can be found at www.eecbg.energy.gov
This month, federal officials announced separate allocations for weatherization and other energy programs. North Carolina was given nearly $208 million and South Carolina received $109 million.
Insulation and HVAC companies, home remodelers and businesses that perform energy audits are expected to benefit from theses stimulus funds.
The weatherization program rebates as much as $6,500 in upgrades to qualified homeowners who add insulation, seal leaks and install more efficient heating and air conditioning systems.The Charlotte region has been awarded $12.6 million in stimulus funds for energy... more

How many jobs will Bank of America Corp. cut in its planned purchase of Wall Street giant Merrill Lynch & Co.?
The Charlotte bank hasn't disclosed the amount, but analysts are expecting a big number if it's to achieve its goal of shaving $7 billion in annual expenses, or 10 percent of combined costs, by 2012. The cuts could resonate from Charlotte to Boston to New York.
At the high end, Aite Group analyst Alois Pirker said in a report last week that the bank may eliminate up to 27,000 jobs, roughly 10 percent of the combined work force of nearly 270,000 employees.
That estimate could be high because Chief Financial Officer Joe Price has said the bank can also wring savings from negotiating better deals with vendors and by combining office space, in addition to job cuts. Spokesman Scott Silvestri said the bank is very early in the merger process and “many decisions haven't been made.”
The deal, expected to close early next year, would combine the nation's biggest consumer bank with the biggest force of stockbrokers and a top-flight corporate and investment bank. The merged company would be the nation's biggest bank by assets.
In the Merrill Lynch deal, Bank of America will likely aim to keep most of Merrill's nearly 17,000 brokers. But Price has said the bank will target back-office positions, overlapping roles and support functions. Pirker, the analyst, said the bank will want to keep its own top-producing brokers, but “large parts of (its brokerage) unit will be redundant, and thus unnecessary.”
Bank of America's wealth and investment management division is based in Boston, and it has back-office operations spread across three major locations: Charlotte, New York and Lincoln, R.I. Merrill has back-office operations in Hopewell, N.J.
Another overlapping area will be corporate and investment banking, which includes Wall Street-style services such as stock and bond offerings and merger advice. Merrill Lynch is the better-known name in this arena, meaning Bank of America bankers in Charlotte and New York could be under fire.
Charlotte's other big bank, Wachovia Corp., is also in the process of cutting jobs, particularly in its mortgage unit. It's eliminating nearly 7,000 positions, or about 6 percent of its workforce.How many jobs will Bank of America Corp. cut in its planned purchase of Wall Street... more

I specialize in condominiums as a real estate broker. This is a complicated niche and there are many nuances, especially in Charlotte's burdgeoning market. So my site is about attached housing (condos and townhouses)information and good research...and you can also see it is very organic. I add all the time. I have just added a proposal to folks to join in the conversation about how to buy and sell...what to look for...the pros and the cons...of attached housing. I started and invite them to lend their voice, history, experiences to the project.
As far as listings go, I give the link to all the properies in our region: www.CarolinaHome.com and then doing research I ask them to Google Mecklenburg Polaris where they can have a field day doing research including finding deeds to any property in Mecklenburg County.
Over the twenty years I have been specializing in conods, I have visited over 700 condominiums, have taken thousands of pictures (before digital) and scanned them in to our database, and made maps for each with Image Composer. To find them, I had to go to the hard copies of all the tax maps. So I learned the hard way...and became more and more fascinated with the concept of condominiums.
I feel that my experience can be helpful to others...and because I don't know everything, I am open to listening and learning.
I am also my own webmaster...so you will see data being changed, updated and added. So the book is organic as is the site.
Thanks for your consideration,
Peace,

In Between The Lines
Our Charlotte Condominium Tutorial and Workbook is off and running! Thank you for your response. Before I post the next chapter, I would like to answer the question posed by a reader from CurrentTV.com?NC-Why Condos? Good question.
For starters, it?s condos because having an interest and a passion for condominiums led to becoming a recognized expert. Now, I do not let that go to my head. There are over 11,000 agents in Mecklenburg County and everyone vies for a piece of the pie.
The ?Condo? pie, however, can be more difficult and challenging than single family housing. From construction to financing, the path is long and winding. For instance there is a difference in financing options between condominiums and townhouses. And when a structure looks like a townhouse, it may well be a condo. So do you still need a survey?
And if it?s a condominium and you have refurbished the kitchen with granite and installed hardwoods throughout?oh, wait, wait?if you are on the second floor are you allowed to install hardwoods?
I am hoping that ?the book? will cover all of the basics as well as many of the nuances.
Please join the conversation. Check out our website and you?ll find other interesting tidbits?like how many condos and townhouse in Charlotte have the word ?Park? in their name. And how many duplicate names are there?
Park Avenue, Park Lake, Park Laurel, Park Phillips, Park Place I, Park Place, Park Place, Park Plaza I, Park Plaza II, Park Plaza, Park Square, Park West, Parkhill, Parkside, Parkside Townhomes, Park View, Parkview.
Why Condos? It is where I started. Yes, my brokerage covers horse farms, warehouses, commercial, mc mansions?after all, those early condo owners were upwardly mobile. Thanks.
