“Blade runner” Oscar Pistorius, the double-amputee sprinter running on carbon-fiber blades, passed his first test with flying colors on his debut at the 13th IAAF World Championships in Athletics. Pistorius swept past several able-bodied runners, finishing third in his heat to reach the semi-finals of the 400 meters Sunday. The South African, who has had to overcome huge legal and performance obstacles just to be allowed to race in Daegu, South Korea, on his prosthetic legs, delighted the crowd with a strong run of 45.39 seconds from an outside lane.
The crowd rose to the double amputee as he powered down the final straight before a band of his compatriots chanted “Oscar! Oscar!” to confirm the 24-year-old as one of the sentimental favorites of the championships. Describing his landmark race as a great relief, especially after the disruption of a false start by another of the runners, Pistorius said he had fulfilled a long-held ambition.
After crossing the finish line, Pistorius gave an appreciative bow to the South Korean crowd of about 10,000 for its cheers and support. After the race, Pistorius said, “I have worked extremely hard to be here” “It has been phenomenal to run. It has been a lot of pressure in the race, and there is a lot of work for tomorrow.” “It was a great opportunity for me to have a chance to run, this is a goal I’ve had for many, many years,” he told reporters. “I really don’t feel like a pioneer but I’m very honored to be in the position I am in . I hope to write a few more chapters, I’m still young.”
This piece includes color photographs, video of the race and a documentary short film.

Famed amputee runner Oscar Pistorius has been charged with assault after a 19-year-old woman said she was injured at a party he hosted, but the athlete yesterday denied the allegations.
The Paralympian star was arrested on Saturday night during a function at his house in a golf estate near Pretoria.
Pistorius, 22, stated that he asked the woman to leave the party.
Unhappy with this, she began kicking the door, which broke, injuring her.
"I categorically deny that I in any way assaulted" the woman, Pistorius said.
Pistorius, nicknamed the Blade Runner, last year won a legal battle to be able to compete against able-bodied athletes after an appeal court overturned objections by the IAAF that his carbon-fibre prosthetic racing blades could give him an unfair advantage. - Sapa-APFamed amputee runner Oscar Pistorius has been charged with assault after a 19-year-old... more

Double-amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius has been left out of South Africa's Olympic team for the Beijing Games.
After failing to meet the qualifying standard to run in the 400 meters, Pistorius was also left off the 4x400m relay team after Athletics South Africa president Leonard Chuene confirmed that four other athletes had faster times than him.
Pistorius has battled with authorities for months, winning an appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport to allow him to race against able-bodied athletes and more recently facing concerns that he could pose a danger to other athletes.
But Pistorius fell short of the 400m qualifying time of 45.55 seconds, although on Wednesday he recorded a personal best of 46.25.
He said in May that his legal battles had prevented him from focusing on training, and that it might be more realistic to aim at qualifying for the 2012 London Olympics.
"From the beginning, we knew that he had to qualify," said his manager PeetVan Zyl. "We didn't expect him to be granted any special opportunity or anything. The rules are the rules."Double-amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius has been left out of South Africa's... more

Oscar Pistorius, the amazing double-amputee runner, can compete to win a place on South Africa's Olympic team. The Swiss-based Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled that his prosthetic limbs don't give him an advantage over other runners, reversing a January ruling that was made against Pistorius by the International Association of Athletics Federations.
Using the blades, his adaptive prosthetic equipment, Pistorius has already broken Paralympic records in the 100, 200 and 400 meter events. And while he did not meet the Olympic qualifying times for those races, last year Pistorius finished second in the 400 meter event at the 2007 South African National Championships, which should make him competitive in his attempt to win a place on South Africa’s Olympic 4×400 meter relay team.

Oscar Pistorius, the double amputee athlete, has been ruled ineligible to compete at the Olympic Games by the International Association of Athletics Federations. The findings of a two-day independent investigation into whether Pistorius's prosthetic running limbs constituted an unfair advantage over other athletes were announced this morning.
An IAAF statement said that the South African's "cheetah" running blades were technical aids and as such were in clear contravention of IAAF rules. This means effectively that he is banned from competing against able-bodied athletes.
