Mr. Van Der Pol understands at abase level why Americans support OWS, distrust corporations, financial institutions and government. "Job creation is done by small businesses, large corporations and individual consumers. So how can we avoid taxing “job creators”?" Corporations and their money have driven our steady loss of jobs, and with it our wealth, while financial institutions have siphoned off money from the economy in the name of "creating" wealth.
By Jim Van Der Pol
Bitter indeed to hear is the mantra of the uninformed that we cannot raise taxes on the “job creators”. Especially is this so when it comes from right within the confines of one’s own family, and from a person who together with his wife, never in his working life cashed a paycheck that was not from the federal government. There can be no more blinding disease than the current epidemic of libertarianism, based as it is upon our traditional careless American individualism.
Back here in the reality-based community, we know better. We are all job creators. We do that by how we live, including what we buy and do not buy. An economy that restricts my income to the point where I cannot afford to buy, even sometimes to buy necessities, cuts down on my ability to create jobs. But there are more important matters than silly political spats about taxes and “job creators.”
There is the matter of what kind of jobs we create and where, which is a critical issue as we come to understand that our nation’s trade deficit is the real issue and not the overhyped kerfuffle over our government’s deficit spending.
Our little farm, one tenth the size in acreage of that of most of our neighbors, is an example. Just big enough as a crop farm to help support an individual that works at a full time job in town, we have been able to build it into an enterprise that supports four full time adult workers, plus several more in the processing business we contract work with.
This is in addition to the usual jobs created by the production and provision of the goods and services needed and purchased by any thriving business. How did it happen?
We became a livestock farm based upon grazing and pasture production, cutting back sharply on the number of acres in row crop production. And we started marketing our products. The libertarian would say we created our own wealth out of our own gumption, ambition and work. There is a bit of truth in that, but only a bit. We did see an opportunity and took it. And it has involved hard work and determination on our part.
But the essential fact is still that a certain number of people decided to create the kind of economic development they wanted by changing how they spent their food dollar. We responded to their desire for meats that taste good and were responsibly produced.
They wanted to know they could talk to the farmer who produced their purchase, if they chose and see how the production was done. They wanted a healthy and vital rural area populated by an increasing number of small farms, and our success with supplying their needs is beginning to spill over to some of the smaller farms in the area because we must have help producing the number of animals needed. We are able to offer a premium hog market to an increasing number of other farmers because our customers have decided that that quality counts, as does the social and natural environment.
This willingness to allow other values into what has been for us in America a purely quantitative decision involving commodities and math could apply to much of our economic life. For example, it is said that the response to Obama’s stimulus was disappointing because our economy is leaky. What this means is that many Americans will run down to the Wal-Mart with any extra money that falls into their hands to spend it on imported Chinese stuff, benefiting international corporations and China in terms of its balance of trade with us, but our own economy very little. On the other hand, what economic activity would result if we insisted upon service with our purchases, and that the item be durable in the first place? Or that it be produced here, and that it have a minimal impact upon the natural world, and fair to the people working at its production?
It is not just consumers. Jeffrey Immelt, business world heavyweight, CEO of General Electric and (most incredibly) Obama’s man for sparking American job creation was heard whining on television to Lesley Stahl that Americans should be cheering for his company. Germans, he said, are very supportive of their own corporations. So are the Japanese.
Why not us? Indeed, why not? Well, German corporations don’t export jobs from Germany to Asia at anything like the rate that GE sheds American jobs. But the reason they don’t is the key to the issue. German corporations have representation on their boards of directors from labor and the communities in which they operate. These are not token positions, but carry with them real power.
German corporations are, you might say, German for a reason. Does Mr. Immelt wish to extensively modify the charter under which his corporation operates to make it more German in character? I sure do. Maybe we could put together a political effort, he and I.
Job creation is done by small businesses, large corporations and individual consumers. So how can we avoid taxing “job creators”? Our best long-term route to improving the economy is to allow our values to drive our economic activities. It is best not to hold our breath while the corporate elite find their values, much less learn to apply them to their corporations. But we don’t have to. Like any important change, we can begin with the guy in the mirror.

The 20th day of October 2011 was one of the darkest days in Chinese society. The whole country witnessed, with our heart full of tears, the death of a little 2 years old girl, named Yue Yue. She was the victim of the most horrible incident anyone could ever experience. This innocent little girl was run over by a truck twice, then ignored by 18 bystanders while laying on the floor, and run over again by another passing truck.
People are afraid to help a fellow citizen in trouble because by getting involved, they take the risk of it costing them money. It is also not uncommon for some people in China to rob a good samaritan trying to help.
It is terrifying to see how all aspects of life and society, in China, revolve around money. Making money, getting money from others, and saving money.
In a society with no religious values, poor social training, and an even poorer sense of community or civic values, how irresponsible pursuit of wealth is turning people's compassion, humanity, morals and values into materialism, selfishness, and lack of values to the point of criminality. Which matters most? Is one the result of the other?
I must warn you, the video is very disturbing.

As it turns out the garbage collectors make a better wage than I was making with my college degree for some years. As a moral guide, it utterly fails, because much of the original Hebrew scriptures were written by ignorant and bigoted savages who condoned and promoted ANIMAL CRUELTY ([Joshua 11:6; 2 Samuel 8:4]), INCEST ([Genesis 4, 9:1, 19:30-38, 20:11-12; 2 Samuel 13: 1-15]), SLAVERY ([Numbers 31:31-35; Leviticus 25:44-45; Exodus 21:2-7; Ephesians 6:5; 1 Timothy 6:1-2]), ABUSE OF SLAVES ([Exodus 21:7, 20-21; Luke 12:47-48]), SPOUSAL ABUSE ([Numbers 5:5-31; Deuteronomy 22:13-21, 28-29; 1 Peter 3:17]), CHILD ABUSE (Genesis 22; Deuteronomy 21:18-21, 23:2; Proverbs 12:10, 20:30, 22:15, 23:13-14; Psalm 137:9]), CHILD MOLESTATION ([Numbers 31:17-18]), ABORTION (Amos 1:13; 2 Kings: 15:16; Hosea 9:11-16, 13:16; Numbers 5:5-31]), PILLAGE ([Genesis 34:13-29;

( and I read it,.........and did NOT disagree .)
Historically, nations and people tend to be more generous and giving, no wait---make that a little less greedy and hateful---when times are good.
Results of the 2010 Census stand in stark contrast to the Elections 2010 results. All the Election 2008 hoopla has died down and apparently it’s back to the same ol’, same ol’.
This is specially true considering the past three years have not been good. Actually, my entire working life the economy has not been good.
In fact since I graduated college more than 30 years ago there have been seven---count them---seven recessions. At the same time not only have the average American’s wages not risen or at least stayed flat---wages have actually dropped about 11 percent.
Oh and by the way beginning next month, “more than 10,000 baby boomers a day will turn 65, a pattern that will continue for the next 19 years.”
More daunting still is the fact that we are told that our national debt is approaching 13 trillion dollars. Though I don’t know where that came from since throughout the “w” administration we were told our national debt was not even $1 trillion. Notwithstanding, combined these are grim, sobering facts.
“Wait”, you say, “How about the dot com era?” “What about the fact that so many Americans bought houses in the 1990’s?” “What about the fact that most Americans paid for years into company pension plans, social security?”
Well basically it’s been like a very well timed joke--- mostly on us--- the boomers.
Step back for a moment and refocus.

-Michael Vick(notes) has been getting support from all sides during his road to redemption. He's now getting it from the leader of the free world.
NBC's Peter King reports that Barack Obama called Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie earlier this week to congratulate him for giving Vick a second chance after his release from prison. According to King, the president said that released prisoners rarely receive a level playing field and that Vick's story could begin to change that.
Forget your political allegiances or feelings about Michael Vick and take a step back to think about this. The sitting president of the United States went out of his way to publicly praise a man who, 3 1/2 years ago, many thought would never play again in the NFL. Even the most ardent believers in Vick couldn't have fathomed a turn-around like this.
In retrospect it seems obvious that Vick would get a second chance in the NFL, but it wasn't so clear-cut back when he was lying to the commissioner, getting sternly admonished in federal court and serving out a sentence at Leavenworth. We tend to take for granted unbelievable events when they slowly unfold before our eyes. The step-by-step nature of these sorts of tales tend to minimize the shock when taken in over a long process. So though it now seems like it was all pre-destined to work out like this, it wasn't: Vick's rise and fall and rise is a truly stunning tale. He went from star to pariah to inmate to backup to MVP candidate to political prop for the leader of the free world all in a span of a couple years.

For democracy to work, complete transparency must be obtained. There must be no hiding behind patriotism, national security, and fear. These catch phrases are a vault for the secrets a government does not want the public to know of. Also due to these phrases, Americans society, while often preaching freedom of speech, in reality practices resentment, hatred, and peer pressure against those who step outside the norm (of what is politically correct). I would thus say no government needs to prohibit the freedom of speech, but only let the people prohibit (more so regulate) speech for them. It has happened so many times in our country’s past, we cannot afford to let this keep happening.
For democracy to work, diplomacy must be the first and preferably the only course of action in settling disputes. Democracy cannot be offensive in nature—only defensive. Due to reasons prior, freedoms and liberties (primarily those stemming from privacy) cannot waver in the shadow of fear, and thus democracy is at a severe disadvantage when it comes to warfare—either democracy (liberty) fails, or military security fails. Just as the integrity of a family is tested through hardships, the integrity of our government is tested through decisions made during or related to warfare and economic downtimes. A democratic government thus cannot suddenly revoke civil liberties or rights in lieu of the often vague, "Clear and Present Danger."
And thus, for democracy to work, preemptive strikes cannot occur. A democratic society must lead by example, not retaliation, revenge, or fear.
For democracy to work, the freedom of the press must be entirely free of regulation and censorship. The live footage of firefights during the Vietnam War had an immense impact on the outlook of war for those on the home front. The press is vastly more censored (both from corporate, and government), today. We cannot afford to have a censored press, as it holds all the power in shifting the majority of Americans’ view of any issue or event. People (straw man, I know) are gullible, and do not realize the power that manipulation has on their decisions and views.
For democracy to work, capitalism must maintain complete separation and segregation from the democratic system. As soon as private funding enters the picture, our potential candidates are primarily only determined by officials promising the majority (the currently diminishing middle class) of Americans false promises, while truly only representing those providing the most money (synonymous with votes) to their campaign. Votes don't get politicians elected, advertising & funding does. So who will get prioritized?
For democracy to work, lobbying must be made illegal, or vastly more restricted and regulated.
For democracy to work, a form of free election must be in order. An equal amount of taxpayer money must be distributed to the two presidential candidates. Since funding is the primary means of obtaining a position, we limit ourselves on the selection of candidates. Money cannot be a prerequisite in order to obtain or maintain a political position--yet it is. Set up two temporary television channels and websites for these candidates. Debates should be daily, and written correspondence between the two candidates should be a must—the topic voted upon by the public. I say written responses because some people are better at composing their thoughts on paper rather than in speech with millions watching, that is more or less just a game of who is quicker on their feet, not who is more reasonable or knowledgeable. Nominees for the general elections should only obtain their money through local donation from the citizens of their future jurisdiction, or by some other means which would allow absolutely ANY American citizen to run and potentially win—not based on their funding and advertising flash, but by their intelligence, charisma, knowledge, ethos, and promises. In sociology, "random" is defined as everyone having an equal chance and possibility to participate (in an experiment); not every American citizen has an equal chance of running for office. I don't have a perfect answer, but it's apparent something needs changed.
For democracy to work, bliss cannot be derived from ignorance. The importance of pursuing the truth and finding information for ones’ self must be emphasized. Everyone is entitled to vote, but not everyone understands for whom their vote entitles.
For democracy to work, accountability must be exacted out. False campaign promises are a form of false advertisement. Politicians must be held to the same justice system as we, the people, are.
Anything else to add?
(News seemed to be the only appropriate place to put this; my apologies if not).

Finally, an explanation for the naysayers...or not.
Suppose a close friend who is trying to figure out the facts about climate change asks whether you think a scientist who has written a book on the topic is a knowledgeable and trustworthy expert. You see from the dust jacket that the author received a Ph.D. in a pertinent field from a major university, is on the faculty at another one, and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Would you advise your friend that the scientist seems like an "expert"?
If you are like most people, the answer is likely to be, "it depends." What it depends on, a recent study found, is not whether the position that scientist takes is consistent with the one endorsed by a National Academy. Instead, it is likely to depend on whether the position the scientist takes is consistent with the one believed by most people who share your cultural values. more at the link:

Water, the holy grail in the exploration of our solar system, the most
coveted of all discoveries. NASA has repeatedly placed it at the
forefront of all deep space mission agendas. We seek it out knowing
that without water there is no possibility of life. Yet here, on the
one place that provides all the water supporting all the known life in
the universe, we are continuously increasing the amount of pollution
and harmful contaminates we pump into our one source of life. A 2009
study by the U.S. Geological Survey detected mercury contamination in
every fish sampled in 291 streams across the United States. This
shows the extent to which airborne mercury from burning fossil fuels
is raining down on our watersheds and entering a wide swath of the
food chain. Around the Great Lakes seasonal algae blooms are covering
the shore. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch continues to grow while
tainting the food chain of our largest ocean and we’re now facing
untold damage from a spewing oil well in the Gulf of Mexico. How
long before the contamination of the northern hemisphere spreads to
the southern oceans? But more importantly, how long before we value
the water here on earth (that gives us life) as highly as we seem to
value it in the rest of the universe?Water, the holy grail in the exploration of our solar system, the most
