RJ Softwares, the creators of the popular Facebook game Scrabulous, can now rest easy as Hasbro drops the copyright infringement lawsuit they filed in order to protect their precious Scrabble.
The lawsuit came about after their requests to Facebook to remove the Scrabble game went unanswered. Days after the lawsuit hit, the creator's of Scrabulous removed the game themselves, replacing it soon after with a retooled version in the form of Wordscraper.
Old Media vs New! I reckon Scrabulous generated offline sales, I know I went out and bought Scrabble again after playing it online religously for about a month. They should have looked to revenue share with the brothers rather than slap a lawsuit on them.RJ Softwares, the creators of the popular Facebook game Scrabulous, can now rest easy... more

Scrabulous is back on Facebook but the popular word game has a new name, new rules and circular tiles.
Developers suspended the game for users in US and Canada on Tuesday, after legal action by Hasbro, the makers of Scrabble.
But developers have resurrected it and called it Wordscraper, a change which may help them beat legal action.
Hasbro is suing the Calcutta-based founders of the game, claiming they are infringing its copyright and trademark.

Two days after Scrabulous went to Facebook heaven comes Wordscraper, a new application from Jayant and Rajat Agarwalla, the Indian brothers who were forced to shut down their popular Facebook application. With a few nips here and few tucks there, they have been able to tweak the venerable Scrabble game enough to make it no longer a copyright infringement (so far, at least). There are new rules and a different look that should protect them from more litigation. The differences are mostly cosmetic with round tiles replacing squares and triple/double word/letter boxes placed differently. In addition, there are quadruple squares. OK, so if we fried up some chicken and seasoned it with 8 herbs and spices (instead of 7), served it in a takeout "basket', used a General as its spokesperson, and called it TFC (Tennessee Fried Chicken), would we be safe from being sued? Two days after Scrabulous went to Facebook heaven comes Wordscraper, a new application... more

Facebook word game fans rejoice! Scrabulous, pulled from Facebook only two days ago due to a lawsuit from Scrabble creators Hasbro, is now back up in the form of Wordscraper. The makers of Scrabulous have given the game some graphics and mechanics tweaking to help differentiate it from the Hasbro original. This is when we get to see if Hasbro's lawsuit had any real merits. Will people stick with the reincarnated Scrabulous, or will they hop on over to Hasbro's official Scrabble Facebook application, currently being enjoyed by over 50,000 players?
The real question here is “Why the hell are so many people wasting their entire day playing games on a social networking site?” How is anything getting done, anywhere?Facebook word game fans rejoice! Scrabulous, pulled from Facebook only two days ago... more

My usual routine consists of waking up, turning on Facebook, and then going straight to Scrabulous (my vice of choice since kicking my crack addiction last Fall). I've logged in almost 1000 games (losing fewer than 200, I may add). To my astonishment I found this message:
Scrabulous is disabled for US and Canadian users until further notice. If you would like to stay informed about developments in this matter, please click here.
Hasbro, the board game giant has finally played its last word and it was a triple letter/triple word score combination, the equivalent of a Michelle Kwan-routine in the world of bold board game moves. For months there were murmurs that Scrabulous' days were numbered. Thank you Scrabulous for providing hours of procrastination. We will miss you.
