For filmmaker Rob Stewart, exploring sharks began as an underwater adventure. What it turned into was a beautiful and dangerous life journey into the balance of life on earth.
Driven by passion fed from a lifelong fascination with sharks, Stewart debunks historical stereotypes and media depictions of sharks as bloodthirsty, man-eating monsters and reveals the reality of sharks as pillars in the evolution of the seas.
In an effort to protect sharks, Stewart teams up with renegade conservationist Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Their unbelievable adventure together starts with a battle between the Sea Shepherd and shark poachers in Guatemala, resulting in pirate boat rammings, gunboat chases, mafia espionage, corrupt court systems and attempted murder charges, forcing them to flee for their lives.
Through it all, Stewart discovers these magnificent creatures have gone from predator to prey, and how despite surviving the earth's history of mass extinctions, they could easily be wiped out within a few years due to human greed.
Stewart's remarkable journey of courage and determination changes from a mission to save the world's sharks, into a fight for his life, and that of humankind. For filmmaker Rob Stewart, exploring sharks began as an underwater adventure. What it... more

Today I read an article on sfgate.com about AB376 a bill that if passed would make the sale of shark fins for shark fin soup illegal. The reason behind this is that the fins for this soup come from a process known as “finning” where a captured shark has its tail and fins cut off and then is thrown back in the water. You might think that the shark would die instantly from this, but that’s not how it works.
The sharks can live on for quite some time suffering and unable to swim the shark dies in one of two ways, starvation or suffocation. Sharks need to keep water moving over their gills in order to breathe. If they can’t then they suffocate from a lack of oxygen.
Senator Leland Yee made a big mistake in the article. He claimed it as an “attack on asian culture“. Riiiiight. Leland, in a city that is 60% asian it’s best not to play the race card when you’re trying to sit in the Mayor’s seat. San Francisco needs a mayor who can bring the people together not separated because of their different cultures. San Francisco is a melting pot of cultures from all over the world, not a side order of shark fin soup.Today I read an article on sfgate.com about AB376 a bill that if passed would make the... more

The Japan Coast Guard obtained an arrest warrant in Tokyo against Sea Shepard activist Paul Watson for or disrupting whale hunts, reports say.
Mr. Watson's Sea Shepherd conservation society shadowed the annual Japanese whaling fleet through the Antarctic.
Japan alleges that Watson instructing members of his group to obstruct Japan's whaling mission and causing injury to Japanese crew, Japanese media reported.
National broadcaster NHK also reported that Japan would seek the 59-year old Canadian's arrest through the International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol).
Japan hunts hundreds of whales each year for what it calls research, but environmentalists say the real purpose is to sell whale meat.
Mr Watson advocates direct action against these "scientific" expeditions and has faced charges in Canada and Norway.
Sea Shepherd's campaign saw its vessels maneuvering so close to Japan's whaling ships this January that one of its boats was sliced in two.

"Inuit leaders are dismayed by protests from southern activists, some of whom have compared the hunters to war criminals.
Hunters from the community of Pond Inlet, Nunavut, killed about 560 narwhal that became trapped as they migrated through a strait between the hamlet and Bylot Island. Ice formed both in front and behind the small whales and prevented them from surfacing.
Hunters following polar bears discovered hundreds of trapped whales. Breathing holes gradually froze over and hunger began to take its toll. The nearest icebreaker was more than a week away, so territorial and federal officials decided the most humane solution was to harvest the animals for food.
That hunt is now complete, said Mike Richards, Pond Inlet's senior administrative officer.
"There's a big celebration planned for Saturday."
"A lot of kids who are (usually) eating chips and drinking pop are eating healthy," Richards said. "It's a lot better than craving Chiclets and gummi bears."
But others are not so happy, judging by comments that have become the talk of Nunavut over the last week.
"Hearts as dark as the foul breath of demons from the bottomless pit of hell have prevailed," posted Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd Society, which has often taken direct and controversial action against whale hunting.
On his website, Watson rails against "ruthless Inuit killers" who "laughed barbarously" as they shot the narwhals.
"Every man who pulled a trigger on those whales is no different than the men who slaughtered the defenceless people in the pit at My Lai, Vietnam," he wrote in an email to Audla, referring to the murders of hundreds of civilians during the Vietnam War.
Audla received at least 12 similar emails from others. One read: ```Culture' is no excuse for unnecessary murder. You people are poachers. I hate you so much."
Even the Humane Society of Canada protested the hunt, although in much more moderate terms.
"I never let the `cultural use' argument interrupt what I say for animals," said executive director Michael O'Sullivan. "My job is to talk for animals because it looks like no one else will."

The Japanese whalers determined to slaughter 1000 whales this season, were attacked with 24 bottles of rancid butter by Sea Shepherd, a group trying to protect the minke whales in the scope of the Japanese harpoons. In addition to butter, they threw an unknown slippery substance on board. The goal was to prevent further whale slaughters. The Japanese are using the incident to find sympathy from an otherwise unsympathetic global majority. The Japanese are calling the incident an act of terrorism and said some of their whalers were injured. Reports indicate the injuries were superficial.
According to the BBC 2000 whales are slaughtered annually despite an international whaling moratorium. Japanese, Norwegian, and Icelandic citizens still whale, but legally under the law. Whale slaughter is legal while conducting scientific research. Never mind, the tons of meat recovered from these slaughters are sold and consumed commercially.
When I first heard of the Japanese whale slaughter, I sent a letter to the Japanese embassy in Washington DC protesting their actions. Takumi Fukuda, First Secretary (Fisheries Attache) responded last week with a three page letter explaining their position. Among many other points already reported by the press, my favorite argument was as follows: "You may also be interested to note that scientists have calculated that globally, whale populations (79 species) consume 280-500 million metric tons of marine living resources such as fish and crustaceans every year. This is 3-5 times the level consumed by human beings worldwide". Perhaps he rather me be angry with whales for eating the only food sources available to them.

Here's an opinion piece I originally wrote for OhMyNews - an online Korean newspaper -about the Japanese Whaling Industry and the IWC meeting last year when they wanted to re-assess the whaling ban.
"...the whaling industry today seems to resemble another rare species: a white elephant. Whaling is far more expensive to maintain compared to the profit attainable. Commericialized whaling for Japan would only result in more unsold whale meat and fat guilt-ridden pets.....The Japanese government has been wasting a significant amount of money on their white elephant industry through IWC political-wrangling and vainly trying to promote the image of whale meat to the general public particularly to the youth who have no memories of leaner times when abundant whale meat symbolized poverty. So far it has been money ill-spent ...."Here's an opinion piece I originally wrote for OhMyNews - an online Korean... more

Australian authorities are closely monitoring the situation following an incident where the Japanese are accused of kidnapping two protesters for two days. One of the captives reported, ""They intended to throw me overboard," he told local radio. "Two guys picked me up by the shoulders, and the gunner, the guy that shoots the whales, picked my legs up and they attempted to tip me over." Contact with the icy waters of the Arctic would lead to a quick death.
Meanwhile the Japanese are trying to "starve the protesters of fuel". The Japanese have their own refueling ship, the protesters do not. The plan is to move around so much that the anti-whale protesters have to return to Australia before the end of the Japanese whaling season.
The protesters say they will stay as long as they have fuel, which may be as little as two weeks. Greenpeace is video taping the whale slaughter, with hopes the graphic images will change Japanese public opinion. Sea Shepard, a second organization, is taking a more aggressive approach. Former Greenpeace founder and an organizer of Sea Shepard, Watson, accused Greenpeace of doing nothing but making "snuff flicks".
