Annie Leibovitz’s life has now taken a decidedly dark turn. In the past five years, Susan Sontag and both of Leibovitz’s parents have died. Her debts now total a staggering $24 Million, payment of which is due on Tuesday, September 8th. If she can’t meet that deadline, she may lose her homes and the rights to her lifetime body of photographic work. Leibovitz has begun to think of herself less as a celebrity artist leading a charmed life and more as a single mother of three, fighting to keep a roof over her head and food on her family’s table. The fear of no longer working is terrifying to her. She has to work.
This comprehensive piece presents a detailed biography, a remarkable, historic slideshow that ranges from Leibovitz’s earliest photography to her more contemporary work, music audio, an extensive, memorable video photo-gallery and links to additional coverage of her work.Annie Leibovitz’s life has now taken a decidedly dark turn. Holy Golly Smokie! What on earth is this? Looks like a scene from “Fast and Furious” version 5.05, all ready to be revving up their engines! I usually think of small town main streets when I see shiny, shiny glittering motorcycles like this. But think I saw some like this down in Greenwich Village last week. Wowee me, this is one really hot, sexy beast mama! Makes me think of Bob Dylan's old song, "The motorcycle black madonna, Two-wheeled gypsy queen, And her silver-studded phantom..." The photographer of this really captured those glimmering blue and black lights very well. This is just awesome!Holy Golly Smokie! What on earth is this? Looks like a scene from “Fast and... more
“Sita Sings the Blues” is a thoroughly astonishing original animated feature film by Nina Paley, which was awarded the Cristal Grand Prix for Best Feature Film at the 2008 Annecy International Animated Film Festival and the Crystal Bear-Special Mention for Best Feature Film at the 2008 Berlin International Film Festival. To have conceived of such a brilliantly animated film like this is a great miracle, a contemporary story nested parallel within an ancient Sanscrit epic, each one telling the story of a brave, noble woman made to suffer because of the betrayal of her weak-willed husband.
Paley encountered great obstacles when she tried to get “Sita Sings the Blues” licensed. Partly because of the 1920's Annett Hanshaw jazz musical soundtrack, licensors came back with the “bargain” estimate of about $220,000. It was simply not possible for her to acquire that kind of money, so instead Paley gave "Sita Sings the Blues" to her audiences. Paley stated, “Like all culture, it belongs to you already, but I am making it explicit with a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike License. Please distribute, copy, share, archive, and show ‘Sita Sings the Blues.’”
This piece presents a detailed review of the film, a number of beautiful, colorful illustrations, music audio, a picture book about the film, a remarkable slide show and a full-version HD video of the animated feature, “Sita Sings the Blues.”“Sita Sings the Blues” is a thoroughly astonishing original animated feature film... more

The late Heath Ledger has won the Supporting Actor Golden Globe for his role in the “The Dark Knight.” The Golden Globe win enhances Ledger’s prospects for the Supporting Actor Oscar at the Academy Awards, whose nominations will be announced on January 22nd, the one-year anniversary of the actor’s death. The award was accepted by “The Dark Knight” Director Christopher Nolan, who said he and his collaborators were buoyed by the enormous acclaim and acceptance the film and Ledger’s performance have gained worldwide.

Published only ten times between 1965 and 1971, “Aspen” billed itself as the first three-dimensional magazine. Most issues arrived in a notebook-size box stuffed with articles that had been printed individually rather than stapled together. But it was the nature of its contents that made “Aspen” magazine stand out like a ski lift in a cornfield. Each issue was as likely to hold postcards, posters and phonograph records as scholarly essays.
Among the magazine’s 235 contributors were many prominent figures on the 1960’s cultural landscape, including: Roland Barthes, Susan Sontag, Samuel Beckett, William Burroughs, Timothy Leary, Allen Ginsburg, John Cage, Philip Glass, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Merce Cunningham, John Lennon, Marshall McLuhan, Yoko Ono, Lou Reed and Andy Warhol. As a paragon of creative publishing, "Aspen" was a true wonder. Its contents, however, are all but lost; few copies of Aspen have survived. In 1971, “Aspen” published its 10th and final issue, the “Asia Issue” that contained fifteen numbered items, no advertisements and no editorial credits.
This detailed article about Aspen's “Asian Issue” presents a number of beautiful vintage photographs of historic works of art from the Far East, as well as music audio and an audio tour of “Aspen”, the very first multimedia magazine in a box.Published only ten times between 1965 and 1971, “Aspen” billed itself as the first... more
Today, December 1st, is the 20th annual World AIDS Day, a day when individuals and organizations from around the world come together to bring attention to the global AIDS epidemic. Around half of all people who become infected with HIV do so before they are 25, and they are killed by AIDS before they are 35. Around 95% of people with HIV/AIDS live in developing nations.
However, today HIV is a threat to men, women and children on all continents around the world. Started in 1988, World AIDS Day is not just about raising money, but also about increasing awareness, fighting prejudice and improving education. World AIDS Day is important in reminding people that HIV has not gone away, and that there are many things still to be done.

“Desperate Housewives” actor Gale Harold has been moved out of intensive care at a Los Angeles hospital and is improving daily after suffering serious injuries in a motorcycle accident last week. A statement from the actor’s representatives says that “a full recovery is expected.”
Harold had suffered swelling on the brain and a fractured shoulder after last week’s accident. He had been under observation in the intensive care unit at Los Angeles County USC Medical Center. The statement, released Thursday night, added: “He thanks everyone for their good wishes.”
Harold currently plays “Jackson,” Teri Hatcher’s character’s love interest in the 5th season of “Desperate Housewives.” Gale is previously best well known for playing the sexual lothario, Brian Kinney, in Showtime’s U.S. version of “Queer As Folk.”

This piece examines poet Billy Collins' enigmatic poem "Hunger" by posting the poem's lines up against a short film showing a silent urban landscape like hyper-literary graffiti. The film interprets Collins' poetic riddle with a visual rendering of the poem, showing a forsaken and depopulated cityscape's lonely craving.
In particular, no matter how grand your home might be, the film reveals that it can be a very lonely place on a very big planet. Further, no matter in what esteem you may hold it, or yourself, ultimately you’re very insignificant. In the end, no one is much different from the people who are very poor or are homeless.

The desire to be properly seen was one of the reasons that, for decades, the performing legends of the Western world paraded through Avedon's studio door; many of them could understand their own talent, but they couldn't fathom what it was in them that attracted the public so powerfully. In Avedon's studio, his subjects were called on to improvise; whether a professional showman or just a novice, they had either to mask or to pronounce themselves. From Avedon's perspective, all choices were telling. His task was to encourage, interpret, re-stage and retouch the portraits in order to confirm and confer identity.
Whether Avedon was mourning his father in a series of harrowing death-bed portraits, capturing dramatic portraits of renowned celebrities or exploring the burned-out faces of Utah drifters, within the camera’s vigilant focus the position of a head, a hand, or a lidded eye assumed the significance of a symbol. These studies have a dark glamor. The glamor of Avedon’s portraits, the arrangement of balance of line, texture, figure, and shadows within the frame, speaks with an uncanny, heartbreaking eloquence.
This detailed article includes a large number of stunning, darkly glamorous Avedon photographic portraits and two videos about his masterful work. In addition, it presents a remarkable photo-gallery comprised of additional remarkable pictures that speak with a heart-rending power. The desire to be properly seen was one of the reasons that, for decades, the... more
Wednesday afternoon, Barack Obama was officially named the Democratic Party's Presidential Nominee, crowning his groundbreaking, historic meteoric rise from a little-known Illinois state senator to becoming the first African-American ever to win a major-party’s presidential nomination.
Thursday night, the National Democratic Convention moves to Denver's Invesco Field so that more Americans can be a part of the fourth night of the Convention, where Barack Obama will accept the Democratic nomination for President. A crowd that is now estimated to be larger than 80,000 people is expected to attend the final convention assembly to hear Obama's acceptance speech.
Obama’s acceptance speech will be given on the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, which King delivered from the steps of Washington's Lincoln Memorial on August 28th, 1963.
This article presents a number of photographs, a replayable live-blogging of Obama's nomination at the convention and three videos (including a video of Obama's nomination at the convention on Wednesday). Barry Feinstein, the rock 'n' roll photographer, was digging through his archives last year when he found a long-forgotten bundle of pictures, dozens of dark and moody snapshots taken of Hollywood back in the early 1960s. Tucked next to the photographs was a set of prose poems, written around the same time by an old friend: Bob Dylan. At the time that he originally arranged the group of photographs in the 60s, Mr. Feinstein had asked Dylan to come out to Hollywood and write some text to accompany the photographs.
The resulting collection is sometimes dark and dreary, sometimes tongue-in-cheek, and often just plain sardonic. There are vintage snapshots of movie props and roadside stands, topless starlets and headless mannequins. In one photograph a young woman, visible only from the ankles down, crouches on Sophia Loren’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, her hand pressed into Sophia Loren's footprints in the cement. In another photograph, a completely empty parking lot at 20th Century Fox is cynically marked with a large sign asking for "Talent."
The article includes a number of uniquely satirical vintage photographs from this collection, a video, music audio and a very intriguing photo-gallery.

"Patti Smith: Dream of Life" is a new film that’s been 12 years in the making, a work that reveals an intimate, impressionistic portrait of a woman who is still blazing her own trail through late middle age, a woman who has seen and suffered great loss and who is perhaps the only major surviving connection from New York City’s Beat generation, to the 1970s Manhattan art scene, to the birth of punk, to the present.
The film is a paean to life, resoundingly joyous and elegiac, warm and vibrantly present, a collage of moods and moments from one immensely talented woman’s richly lived time on earth. "Dream of Life" is a beautiful and occasionally haunting artistic creation, a meditation on aging and mortality, an intimate study of an unusual kind of fame and the portrait of a genuinely remarkable person.
Stunning photographs, five remarkable videos and a wonderful photo-gallery are included.
