After a heated, divisive campaign, fueled by a record $73 million of spending, California voters backed Proposition 8, which would change the state Constitution to ban same-sex marriage.
With 96 percent of the vote counted, the measure was winning by a decisive 400,000-vote margin, 52.2 percent to 47.8 percent. It had piled up huge margins in the Central Valley, but lost in every Bay Area county but Solano.
Six months after the California Supreme Court cleared the way for gay and lesbian couples to wed, the estimated 18,000 same-sex couples who took advantage of the landmark decision now wonder if they will be the last.

A few weeks before Virginia's legislative elections in 2005, a researcher working on behalf of a clandestine group of wealthy, gay political donors telephoned a Virginia legislator named Adam Ebbin. Then, as now, Ebbin was the only openly gay member of the state's general assembly. The researcher wanted Ebbin's advice on how the men he represented could spend their considerable funds to help defeat anti-gay Virginia politicians.
There were five benefactors: David Bohnett of Beverly Hills, Calif., who in 1999 sold the company he had co-founded, Geo-Cities, to Yahoo! in a deal worth $5 billion on the day it was announced; Timothy Gill of Denver, another tech multimillionaire; James Hormel of San Francisco, grandson of George, who founded the famous meat company; Jon Stryker of Kalamazoo, Mich., the billionaire grandson of the founder of medical-technology giant Stryker Corp.; and Henry van Ameringen, whose father Arnold Louis van Ameringen started a Manhattan-based import company that later became the mammoth International Flavors & Fragrances.
Among gay activists, the Cabinet is revered as a kind of secret gay Super Friends, a homosexual justice league that can quietly swoop in wherever anti-gay candidates are threatening and finance victories for the good guys. The veteran American comedian Jerry Lewis is under fire after he made what has been described as an anti-gay slur, little over a year after he was forced to apologize for a similar remark.
The gaff happened during a news conference on Sydney when he was asked for his opinion on cricket.
"Oh, cricket? It's a fag game. What are you, nuts?" 82-year-old Lewis replied, while handling an imaginary cricket bat in a camp manner.
The comment was broadcast by the Austrian Network Ten news.
The American Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) will now examine the footage.
Last year, Lewis apologized after making a comment during a televised fund-raiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
"Oh, your family has come to see you. You remember Bart, your oldest son, Jesse, the illiterate fag.." Lewis said before stopping mid sentence, presumably realizing that the joke may not be appropriate in a politically correct society.
Lewis later apologized "to anyone who was offended."
"I obviously made a bad choice of words. Everyone who knows me understands that I hold no prejudices in this regard," he added. "The success of the (telethon) and all the good that will come from it shouldn't be lost because of one unfortunate word. I accept responsibility for what I said. There are no excuses. I am sorry."The veteran American comedian Jerry Lewis is under fire after he made what has been... more

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) have announced that the number of gay and lesbian TV characters on broadcast networks will double this season.
GLAAD’s yearly survey reveals that there will be 16 regular LGBT characters on major network scripted series in the 2008-2009 season.
This is double the amount of LGBT characters in last year’s season, and the most recorded since GLAAD began carrying out the survey 13 years ago.
The figures are welcomed as the survey demonstrated declining LGBT representation in television broadcasts in 2006-2007, and 2007-2008.
The survey also shows that the number of recurring LGBT characters is on the rise, increasing from 13 last season to this season’s 19.
GLAAD president Neil Giuliano said:
"This dramatic increase shows how far many networks have come in developing complex, multilayered lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender characters."
The organisation named Fox as the most-improved network for LGBT representation.
The network had no LGBT characters last year, but this year will have five, which is more than any other network. CBS has no LGBT characters, whilst CW has only one.The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) have announced that the number... more

If you’re anything like us, you’re wondering why GLAAD’s remained silent on Joe Scarborough’s trans trashing last week.
For those of you who missed it, Scarborough and his cohorts on MSNBC’s Morning Joe took multiple shots at pregnant trans man Thomas Beatie, whom they referred to as disgusting and the such. Obviously we all knew Beatie’s Oprah appearance would cause a controversy, but had hoped that mainstream news agencies would have a little more class. Not Scarborough, though.
That story broke on Friday, so we figured GLAAD wouldn’t get involved until Monday. Well, they didn’t. We were a bit disappointed in their silence and decided to do a bit of digging. Rather than addressing our initial questions, the media watchdogs at GLAAD directed us to Mara Keisling, executive director of the National Center For Transgender Equality, with whom GLAAD has been working on the Beatie story.

Los Angeles Times journo Tom O’Neil sure ain’t happy with GLAAD.
O’Neil wrote last week that the homo media watchdog should revoke the award it bestowed upon As The World Turns for the soap’s gay teenage love story. Though certainly ground breaking, that story’s caused a bit of protest among gay fans, who have urged producers and writers to lift a ban on the character’s sex lives. The teens, Luke (Van Hansis) and Noah (Jake Silbermann), kissed in early 2007, but a spokesperson from Proctor & Gamble, which produces the show, says they nixed new scenes “”because of some of the feedback that we’ve gotten, and because of what we thought was best for the show creatively”.[Via Queerty]

Not that we would expect any less from Fox News but this is seriously crossing the line; simply ridiculous and GLAAD, the Gay Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, is having NONE of it!
In a stark and disturbing contrast, Fox News Radio host John Gibson cruelly mocked Ledger's death and his role in Brokeback Mountain during his Jan. 22 John Gibson Show radio broadcast. During the show, Gibson played an audio clip from the film of Jake Gyllenhaal's character, Jack, telling Ennis (played by Ledger), "I wish I knew how to quit you." Gibson then coldly quipped, "Well, he found out how to quit you." Then, after playing another audio clip from the movie of Ledger's character saying, "We're dead," Gibson mockingly said, "We're dead" and played the clip again.
GLAAD is calling for action against Gibson and wants Fox News to do something about it and needs your help! Not that we would expect any less from Fox News but this is seriously crossing the... more
