Today on Current Music:
+I may now die in peace because this is what I have been waiting for all summer! Monsters of Folk (Jim James, M.Ward, Conor Oberst, Mike Mogis= SUPERGROUP) reveal one track for us folk-indie-obsessed minds to drool over. All you have to do is say please (literally)!
+Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys (Akron, OH) plans North American solo tour. Some possible irony because he was practically solo before but nonetheless sure to continue melting music brains.
+And Q-Tip is coming out with a book? Maybe he will answer the question I spent many restless nights trying to answer: who IS Bonita Applebum?

As far as monsters go, the Monsters of Folk are a pretty tame bunch.
There’s no roaring or mayhem on the group’s superb and spooky self-titled debut, out Sept. 22. Instead there is a lot of finely crafted singer-songwriter fare from three of indie rock’s most vaunted troubadours - M. Ward, Jim James of My Morning Jacket, Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes - and one of the genre’s most respected musician-producers Mike Mogis, who has produced Ward and played in Bright Eyes.
The quartet originally hooked up during a joint outing in 2004. That tour’s road manager bestowed the tongue-in-cheek moniker - a play on the ’80s Monsters of Rock metal tours - and ever since they’ve been trying to find a way in their busy schedules to work together again.
“We haven’t been strangers over the last few years,’’ says Ward, who in addition to his solo career works on the side project She & Him with actress Zooey Deschanel. “We’ve been playing on each other’s projects here and there but, yeah, getting the four of us into a room together required arranging.’’

The idea behind Monsters of Folk was actually pretty simple -- it's just a group of four friends who came together to form a band for fun. But those four friends happen to be well-known alpha males, each one a successful singer-songwriter in their own right, each one respected for leadership within their own projects (including Bright Eyes, My Morning Jacket and She and Him), and each possesses their own distinctive creative vision. After all, the band members are Conor Oberst, Jim James, M. Ward and Mike Mogis.
But rather than turning into a clash of the titans, the Monsters of Folk were able to achieve unity, driven by their mutual respect and love for each other's music. Spinner gathered all of them together in a Santa Monica hotel room recently to discuss the making of their self-titled album and, of course, each other. The idea behind Monsters of Folk was actually pretty simple -- it's just a group... more

The Omaha World-Herald reports that Conor Oberst will release one more album as Bright Eyes and then retire the name. The album will come out on Saddle Creek Records in 2010, and it's the president of Saddle Creek, Robb Nansel, who spoke with the World-Herald. "My guess, based on what he's expressed to me, is that there will be one more Bright Eyes record and that will be it," Nansel told the paper.
Either way, Conor Oberst will continue to record and perform, but this might be the end for Bright Eyes. Currently Oberst is knee-deep in the Monsters of Folk project. The Omaha World-Herald reports that Conor Oberst will release one more album as Bright... more
