Kenneth McDonald, was among two teenagers honored Thursday for their roles in breaking up another student's attack on a Kalamazoo Public Schools substitute bus driver this week.
Kenneth and an 18-year-old man from Parchment, who asked not to be identified, pulled a 16-year-old Kalamazoo boy off a Kalamazoo Public Schools bus driver after he had repeatedly punched the bus driver Tuesday.
"Too many times we hear of situations in which the bystanders don't become involved, either for fear or retribution," Probate Judge Curtis Bell told the teenagers at the Kalamazoo County Circuit Court's Family Division. "But in this case, you both saw something that was absolutely atrocious. You stepped in and did the right thing."
Kenneth, a junior attending the county juvenile home's Intensive Learning Center, had been sleeping on the bus when he heard an argument.
"I was shocked. ... I thought he was going to get some attention from the rest of the students, but then he just started hitting her," Kenneth said. "I just tried to stop it and break it up before it really got out of hand."
Kenneth's role in breaking up the attack shows he's learned from his past, his mother said.
"I was very happy and proud of my son," Abrams, of Kalamazoo, said. "I can see he's turning his life around, I really do."
Kenneth's probation officer, Yvette Harrison, said of his award, "I wanted him to experience when you do good things, good things happen. With the kids that are in the system, all they are used to is doing bad things and getting consequences for that."Kenneth McDonald, was among two teenagers honored Thursday for their roles in breaking... more
PASSENGERS hailing a bus being driven by James William could be forgiven for thinking Santa has opted for a new mode of transport.
Dressed in full Father Christmas outfit, the 55-year-old driver has transformed his single-decker vehicle into his own grotto on wheels.
James, from Denton, spent more than £60 of his own money, and took about two hours, to decorate the bus with items including tinsel, lights, Christmas tree, festive stickers, mini Santa and snowmen.
He also plays Christmas carols and festive tunes and every passenger also gets the chance to pick a sweet treat from his Christmas sack.
James, who drives the Hayton's bus on the 195 and 196 routes, said: "We are going through depressing times with the credit crunch and everything else, and all I want to do is put a smile on the face of every passenger.
"I go to work every day, 52 weeks in the year, with the sole intention of making at least one person a day smile.
"Everyone who gets on the bus or who sees it giggles or smiles and it makes my day.
"I've been driving buses for different companies for eight years and I've done it every year. In the past some drivers have given me stick for it
"But I remember a little girl aged about four with her nana and when I opened door and she saw the Santa Claus outfit and the bus there was a smile of joy on her face.
"After that I didn't care what anybody else said because I knew it was worth it."
Wise-cracking James, who admits that he may one day like to try his hand as a comedian, also has a book of gags he uses to cheer up passengers.
Passenger Sylvia Williams, from Gatley, Stockport, who catches the bus on its circular route from Withington Hospital via Gatley and Sharston, said: "When I first saw the bus I was amazed, surprised and delighted as it is not something you expect to see on public transport. Bus journeys can be boring but the effort he has gone to makes the trip really enjoyable."PASSENGERS hailing a bus being driven by James William could be forgiven for thinking... more

A young couple in northern England are fighting back after a bus driver allegedly kicked them off the bus saying "We don't let freaks and dogs like you on."
The couple are fans of S&M and were dressed in their usual attire, for Dani Graves, black, gothic clothes and for his lady friend, a lead! It seems there's nothing more enjoyable for his girlfriend Tasha, than being led around town on a leash.
Dani and his 'pet' Tasha believe they are now the victims of discrimination and victimisation for their choices in clothing and 'accessories,' she defended their fashion tastes by, quite rightly saying, "I am a pet, I generally act animal like and I lead a really easy life. I don't cook or clean and I don't go anywhere without Dani. It might seem strange but it makes us both happy. It's my culture and my choice. It isn't hurting anyone."
So there you go Mr. Bus Driver - No more hails to you!
