Pay attention. There will be a quiz.
1. A section of our new Embedded with Cold War Kids is shot near the Cal Neva resort in Lake Tahoe—a beautiful view also showcased in the Godfather movies:
According to this guide to movies shot in Nevada:
Key Nevada action starts in 1958 as a Corleone child receives his first communion at Tahoe, followed by a celebration at the family's lakeside mansion. The real-life Sam Giancana/Frank Sinatra history at the Cal-Neva Lodge gives Tahoe a historical connection with the mob that made sense to audiences. It's also easy to believe that people with money–dirty or clean–would be drawn to Tahoe's beauty and a compound like the Kaiser Estate. The splendor and peace of Tahoe make a perfect backdrop for a sequence that pits Michael against his brother Fredo in a way that would have horrified their father. The scene in which Fredo goes out on a boat, silhouetted against a darkening, stormy sky, is a classic instance of location melding with action to create unforgettable cinema.
2. While shooting green screen footage for our Make Common's Day video call-out, Common—who appeared in the mob movie Smokin' Aces— taped his five favorite films of all time for the Rotten Tomatoes Show. At number one is, of course:
3. And then there's Washington, DC, where Michael Corelone did time in front of a Congressional inquiry in Part 2. As far as we know, hometown DJs Thievery Corporation never had to actually appear before Congress—but they did suffer a suspiciously timed audit following an anti-war concert they staged in 2003.
Did we miss some other Embedded/Godfather connection? Come up with a serious contender and we'll send you a special gift pack of thanks.Pay attention. There will be a quiz.

Hollywood is addicted to sequels. It's a big-screen trend that bloomed in the '70s, thanks to the Godfather movies. But it wasn't until this decade that the trend exploded in a jumble of franchises like Shrek, prequels like Batman Begins, "reimaginings" like Ocean's Eleven, and even remakes of sequels, like Halloween II.
All this sequel madness actually started much earlier, NPR film critic Bob Mondello tells Guy Raz. "This is how Hollywood decided to hook people in the first place," starting with matinee serials like Buck Rogers.
One of the big differences this decade, says Mondello, is the literary roots of many film franchises, from The Lord of the Rings to Harry Potter to Twilight.
And there's another big literary influence these days — comic books like Spider-Man, X-Men and Watchmen.
Mondello says the franchise frenzy has even changed the way we watch movies. "What Hollywood does is it cuts off the conclusion," he says. "So you get this rising action to a climax, you stop, and then you're set up for the sequel.
"You keep on getting these stories that are all beginning and middle — and you never get an end. And we've trained audiences not to expect an ending."
That leads to the big finish of films like The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, the final chapter of J.R.R. Tolkien's trilogy. Mondello says that movie actually consisted of about eight endings. "They had to convince the audience it was actually over," he says.
The pressure can be a challenge for s — not to mention audiences — but no matter how hard some directors try to avoid repeating themselves, the lure of the sequel is often just too strong.
Maybe Michael Corleone was speaking for all of Hollywood when he said, "Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in."

Their first piece is an awesome marionette of Don Vito Corleone, by Michael Lau. The resemblance to Marlon Brando is quite uncanny. The marionette itself comes complete with his trademark furrowed brow, and potentially traumatized cat--I'm just going by the expression. The original version of this piece, marionette included, will be packaged in a limited edition collectors box, and launched at the "Family Tradition" art exhibition in Los Angeles on July 19th, at De la Barracuda and San Diego Comic Con. Two additional colorways should be available for the limited addition at select retailers.
MINDstyle and Lau have announced that they'll be following up this release with two alternate versions, which they've titled the "classic" and "secret". No details as to the actual changes they'll make to the figure, but expect to see both of those hit store shelves later this fall, worldwide.

A man who wore a Don Corleone outfit, complete with "gun" - found himself a wanted man by police in Kent and London.
Stuart Harris, 35, was seen waving the BB gun around a filling station that he stopped off at on his way up to a fancy dress party in the capital.
Using number plate recognition, the cops finally tracked him down at 3am the next day - when an armed unit rudely awakened him from his slumber

The soap opera that is the Oakland Raiders front office makes for great theater, but a horrid way to run a professional football franchise. The biggest piece to the drama is the lack of any significant official comments one way or another on the situation dating back to the beginning of the Lane Kiffin saga in January. There is one way that this drama could be put to bed for good, and that would be for Al Davis to hold court with the media and answer some questions about what is going on inside Raiders headquarters. The soap opera that is the Oakland Raiders front office makes for great theater, but a... more

When Don Corleone's daughter got married in the film "The Godfather," the guests kissed his hand and he dispensed favours because no Sicilian Mafia boss could refuse a request on his daughter's wedding day.
But when the real thing took place in Corleone, the Sicilian hill town made famous by the movie, the Mafia's former "boss of bosses" Salvatore 'Toto' Riina could only read about it in newspapers Thursday from inside prison.
Lucia Riina, his 28-year-old daughter, was married on Wednesday and, in the absence of her father, given away by her brother, Giuseppe.
These wise guys weren't called "wise" for nuttin'.....they would probably be able to make an offer to countries to settle their differences, an offer that they can't refuse...
its a fact tho, the Mafia..the Italian Mafia always gave the people what they wanted. The government made it illegal for them to do certain things, like loans, gambling, etc...but what did the government do? They made it LEGAL for only the government to gamble and control high interest loans. Off Track Betting, consumer loans with almost 25% interest, etc, etc....
Their downfall? Drugs..the big bosses told the younger generation of Mafiosos to stay outta the drug trade and they didn't listen.
I mean, when you compete with the Government, they listen!
see here..

That was about the time the government raised the anti in cracking (pun intended) down on the guys....
Bring em back, they will make peace in the world with an offer no one can refuse!

Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis has been pushing for coach Lane Kiffin to resign and is considering Dennis Green as a potential replacement, sources close to Kiffin and the team said.
Davis has gone so far as to draft a letter of resignation for Kiffin to sign, a source said. Kiffin has refused to do so but has dared Davis to fire him instead. The letter, the source said, was sent to Kiffin two weeks ago.
