There are few names in sports that elicit a passionate visceral response, but the name Al Davis has a nearly universal effect. He is the man who built the Oakland Raiders into a powerhouse, but he has also been the captain of the ship that has gone 19-62 since Super Bowl XXXVII.There are few names in sports that elicit a passionate visceral response, but the name... more

With all the talk of "mavericks" in this election season, we in Current's PDIG, as part of our enduring Commitment to Excellence, would like to celebrate the true original maverick of the AFL and NFL - the man who defied Pete Rozelle, the master of the vertical passing game, the progenitor of pride and poise, the only man who could give George Steinbrenner tips on how to fire a coach, the denizen of the track suit, the individual solely responsible for the continuing presence of Brylcreem on our drugstore shelves, the Managing General Partner of the mighty Oakland Raiders himself, the inimitable Allen "Al" Davis.
Please feel free to share your thoughts and memories of this towering and still ever-so-vital presence on the American sporting landscape.

Our good friend Jason Jones of the Sacramento Bee is reporting that Lane Kiffin and Al Davis will be meeting tonight. There’s no word on what the meeting is about for now, but you can guess that it might have something to do with Kiffin’s outing of his defensive coordinator and his continued strife with the boss. We’ll keep you informed if any news comes out....Our good friend Jason Jones of the Sacramento Bee is reporting that Lane Kiffin and Al... more

Sometimes you just have to curse. The saying goes, that a person using curse words reveals their lack of intelligence. I don’t necessarily agree with that line of thinking. If it were true, you’d have to account for every man or woman who has ever been a sailor, because nobody curses like a drunken one.
Then again, we (sailors)...Sometimes you just have to curse. The saying goes, that a person using curse words... more

Alright, I haven’t slit my wrists or gone into a funk since the end of the live blog on Monday night. I just want to set the record straight on that front before anyone starts using the term ’sensitive’ about me…uh…hold on, I think it might be too late for that. However, I’m alive and well and completely finished with any and all ‘feelings’ that I may have had on Tuesday morning....Alright, I haven’t slit my wrists or gone into a funk since the end of the live... more

After often requesting through the media and getting support from Raider Nation, the media, and sites like this one, the Oakland Raiders have finally started to make a few transactions that may aid in the improvement of the team. Of the roster cuts, none really surprised except for the fact that there are still a few players, possibly on scholarship...After often requesting through the media and getting support from Raider Nation, the... more

While sending my kid off to college this weekend, I realized that the Raiders marketing department is deficient when it comes to getting the games televised in Northern California. There I was, nearly four hours away from the Oakland Coliseum and the only NFL game on in the area was Pittsburgh at Minnesota!...While sending my kid off to college this weekend, I realized that the Raiders... more

Does anyone remember this?
“He is a phenomenal player, but I don’t really think running back is a need for us.“
“We don’t have a lot of picks. We have the N choice overall, which is significant. We could trade down, obviously. We’d love to continue to work on our defensive line. There are a couple of really good defensive lineman that may be available at 4.“Does anyone remember this?

Preseason games are nothing more than a double edged sword for coaches. One edge, the blunt one, is the improvement of the team and for getting everyone on the same page prior to the season. The other edge, the sharp one...Preseason games are nothing more than a double edged sword for coaches. One edge, the... more

As a Raider fan, I’m sure that there are many stories that you’re probably tired of hearing about. Take for instance the story about the Raiders record over the past five years, or the fact that they didn’t draft Matt Leinert when they had the chance, or even that dreadfull 2006 season when Tom ‘bed and breakfast’ Walsh ran the offense into the ground with the help of Art Shell, Irv Eatman, and Jackie Slater...As a Raider fan, I’m sure that there are many stories that you’re probably... more

So now we wait. Friday can’t come soon enough for the Raider Nation to get its first glimpse of their 2008 Oakland Raiders, ‘glimpse’ being the operative word. The first preseason game is not a game for fans to get good long looks at most of the players that will be starting on opening day, but there will be a series of plays to go....So now we wait. Friday can’t come soon enough for the Raider Nation to get its... more

As reported earlier, Javon Walker became big news Saturday. When ESPN’s Chris Mortensen broke the news about his attempted retirement, we decided to take a ‘wait and see’ approach to the news. Even though it’s rare that Mortensen whiffs, when it comes to the Raiders ESPN has a way of turning into BS-spin...As reported earlier, Javon Walker became big news Saturday. As you may have already heard, Chris Mortensen is reporting that he has a source who is confirming that Javon Walker tried to retire on Thursday. According to the source, Walker was unhappy with his performance thus far on the practice field. During training camp, it’s been reported here that he’s been struggling and that Lane Kiffin was hoping that he’d be further along...As you may have already heard, Chris Mortensen is reporting that he has a source who... more

I’m happy, Patrick is happy, Raider Nation should be happy, because JaMarcus Russell is happy. At least he is according to one reporter that we here at TFDS know and trust. As I was looking through some of the reports concerning the Raiders, I realized that there are 11 wide receivers in camp right now. Last year, the Raiders held on to five out of 15 or 16 that attended camp. Those are long odds if your name isn’t Javon, Ronald, or Drew. Of course those three, (Javon Walker, Ronald Curry, and Drew Carter), have solidified their respective spots thus far. So who else will make the team this season?...As I was looking through some of the reports concerning the Raiders, I realized that... more

Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis has been pushing for coach Lane Kiffin to resign and is considering Dennis Green as a potential replacement, sources close to Kiffin and the team said.
Davis has gone so far as to draft a letter of resignation for Kiffin to sign, a source said. Kiffin has refused to do so but has dared Davis to fire him instead. The letter, the source said, was sent to Kiffin two weeks ago.
