"Steven Soderbergh put on his experimental hat and busted out The Girlfriend Experience, a film about a high priced call girl, her personal trainer boyfriend and their respective clients. What makes the movie experimental is Soderbergh’s aversion to professional actors, his disdain for linear storytelling and his use of digital cameras and no lighting set ups. Also setting the movie apart from most other films is the long series of stationary camera set ups, often far away from his characters, capturing the moments in a fly on the wall, almost documentary sort of way. Clever use of an interview with a journalist increases this fake-documentary thing."

Steven Soderbergh has managed to build an enviable career – he gets to make fun, huge projects like ‘Ocean’s Eleven’, and alternates these with smaller, self-consciously serious films such as ‘The Underneath’, ‘Kafka’, and ‘The Girlfriend Experience’, which I saw this afternoon at the Chelsea Clearview next door to the Chelsea Hotel, in, as you might expect, Chelsea. Name of the lead character of this movie? It’s an easy guess – my sense is that Soderbergh’s protagonist, played an adult film actor called Sasha Grey is supposed to represent an entire social cohort as well as an individual soul. In that regard, naming her after a part of New York City known for its cultural creativity and sociological excess seems not only obvious but just right.

"Director Steven Soderbergh (Traffic, Erin Brokovich, the Ocean's 11 series) has a new movie out about the life of a New York prostitute during the financial collapse called "The Girlfriend Experience."
The film stars porn star Sasha Grey, whom Rolling Stone calls "the dirtiest girl in the world" in its profile of her in the current issue. Grey is also the reigning AVN Female Performer of the Year (at 21, she's the youngest woman to win the honor). She was in town this week to pimp the movie during Exxxotica Miami Beach. I watched the film (see the trailer here) and caught up with her on Friday at the Catalina Hotel.
I asked her about the research she did for the Soderbergh movie, the Rolling Stone story, her relationship, and how she feels porn fits into the women's lib movement."
