Kwame Opam — Remember the joy you felt climbing through the tunnels at your McDonald's PlayPlace? Yeah, me too. And I don't particularly remember getting sick. But according to Erin Carr-Jordan's independent findings, we were all playing wrist-deep in pretty gnarly bacteria. Fun!
Dr. Carr-Jordan, a professor of developmental psychology and mother of four, has spent the last few months investigating the play structures of more than fifty fast food franchises, including McDonald's, Burger King, and Chuck E. Cheese's. After sending cultures to a lab, she found evidence of "coliform, four different kinds of staph, likely meningitis and gonorrhea, and more."
Scary stuff. And her findings were from a broad swath of restaurants, from rich and poor areas. All this in spite of the fact that most companies have some kind of protocol regarding play areas. Meanwhile, food departments don't typically inspect the structures as part of the restaurant, letting the problem go unchecked.

30-year-old Sheyla Hershey expected to get attention from her chest after a surgery in June increased her bust to a world record setting 38KKK, but she didn’t anticipate it would be because her implants were threatening her life.
The 5′3″ native Brazilian who lives in Houston, has undergone 30 plastic surgery procedures costing more than $40,000. Most of these operations have been to increase her bust, but she has also had work done on her nose, lips, and butt.
Because Texas limits the amount of silicone that may be inserted into a human body, Hershey was forced to received her latest implant upgrade in Brazil, which implanted a gallon of silicon into Hershey’s chest. A month after the surgery, Hershey reported...

Fairfield, Westmead and Concord public hospitals were each found to have the bacteria, while Royal Prince Alfred and Royal North Shore hospitals were cleared, Channel Seven reported today. Infants, the elderly and patients with suppressed immune systems are commonly the most susceptible to picking up the bacteria. "It can increase the sickness and morbidity of the patient,'' University of NSW School of Public Health spokeswoman Mary-Louise McLaws told Seven. The bacteria can cause the disease Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA).
The network found that cases of MRSA occur more often in New South Wales than any other Australian state or territory and is twice as likely to occur in NSW than it is in South Australia or Western Australia. "It does cause people to die,'' College of Surgeons spokesman Richard West said. About 12 per cent of intensive care unit patients contract some kind of infection during their hospital stay, Dr West said. ''... A number of them will die from the infection,'' he said.
Stopping the spread of golden staph can be as easy as ensuring hospital staff wash their hands before making contact with patients. "Patients should insist that doctors and nurses in the hospitals who are attending to them wash their hands before they examine the patients,'' Dr West said. NSW Health Minister Reba Meagher declined network invitations to comment on the matter.Fairfield, Westmead and Concord public hospitals were each found to have the bacteria,... more

Over the last few weeks, the subject of Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) has hit the media making a big impact in the gay community. Several reputable news agencies including the New York Times and the San Francisco Chronicle published detailed studies about the spread of the disease between men who have homosexual relations. While the risk of theâÃÂàsuperbugâÃÂàdoes have a higher rate of infection among men who have sex with men, the University of California San Francisco, who first reported the problem, issued a public apology to the gay community for singling them out as major contributor of this potentially deadly disease.Over the last few weeks, the subject of Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus... more
