What started out as speculation over US plans to build a missile defense system in Eastern Europe has begun to spiral into what could now be the Poland missile crisis. Vladamir Putin has not mixed his words in his opposition to the United States plan to build a "missile defense system" in Poland - a plan which has now developed into a working deal.
The missile defense system is to house "interceptor" missiles which America argues is to protect the US from rogue nuclear states such as North Korea and Iran. North Korea have recently agreed to disarm and seemingly have begun to open their borders for trade, whilst the IAEA has recently stated that Iran's nuclear ambitions were abandoned four years ago.
When Russia built a nuclear base in Cuba, the world nearly descended into nuclear war because of the tension the move caused. Whatever the reasoning the US has for wanting a missile base in Europe it seems clear that it will only increase friction in the region and won't help US/Russian relations. Russia are a country who have been very vocal as of late, stating that they will use "pre-emptive nuclear strikes" if they, or their allies, are threatened. This is one to keep an eye on.
