Grateful Dead to Celebrate Jerry Garcia's Life at San Francisco Giants Baseball Game
To remember the 15th anniversary of Jerry Garcia's death, the San Francisco Giants have planned an impressive list of events for the team's face-off with the Chicago Cubs on August 9th.
Garcia's bandmate Bob Weir will sing the National Anthem prior to the game while drummer Mickey Hart will attempt to break the world record for largest kazoo ensemble during a performance of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" for that night's seventh inning stretch.
On top of that, the Giants will hand over the field to Dead cover bands to perform before the game and Garcia's daughter Annabelle will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Each year, Garcia is remembered in his hometown of San Francisco for the week of August 1st — but this year's event might be the most over-the-top yet.
For the Deadheads who can't make it out to the game, check out Garcia and Weir's performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner" from a 1993 Giants game in Candlestick Park.Posted: July 9, 2010 1:13 P.M. EDT | By Daniel Kreps (Rolling Stone)

Only Philadelphia sports teams have played the Spectrum more than the Grateful Dead.
Back before Jerry Garcia died in 1995, the prototypical jam band sold-out the slated-for-demolition arena a whopping 53 times, then did two more shows in their post-Garcia incarnation as The Other Ones in 2002.
And last night, the band now known as The Dead, who reformed for an Obama benefit in State College last fall, opened another two night sold-out stand in South Philadelphia.
Frosty haired frontman Bob Weir kicked off the three hour show with “Playing In The Band,“ which is pretty much what the 61 year old mellow voiced singer has been doing since he met Garcia on a fateful New Year's Eve in Palo Alto in 1963.Only Philadelphia sports teams have played the Spectrum more than the Grateful Dead.... more

The Dead live. And Deadheads live for the Dead.
The Dead are playing the soon-to-be-gone Spectrum for two final shows, one last night and one tonight. Not the Grateful Dead - laid to rest along with iconic bandleader Jerry Garcia in 1995 - but a core of the original band members who call themselves the Dead: guitarist Bob Weir, bassist Phil Lesh, and drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann.
If you count the original band and all its branches as one long, strange trip, these will be their 54th and 55th concerts at the Spectrum, more than any other musical act. (Bruce Springsteen is in second place, way back there with 32.)The Dead live. And Deadheads live for the Dead.

Rest in peace, Jerry. You're covered.
The Dead crushed The Can on Thursday night, with guitarist Warren Haynes nimbly assuaging any mourning of the nine-years-gone band captain Jerry Garcia.
Minus the "Grateful" and minus their beloved skipper, remaining Dead members Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, birthday-boy Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart came together in a momentous collaboration Thursday at the Pepsi Center, giving soulful Haynes plenty of room to conjure the missing master.Rest in peace, Jerry. I'm grateful that I got a ticket in the first 45 seconds. This is going to be a sick show tonight.
