These were my hastily-written memories, because I was so sick -- the days before the 40th anniversary of Woodstock -- of the hundreds of negative articles and emails I was seeing plastered everywhere. What got to me the most was that of all those people who wrote ABOUT Woodstock -- and how bad, ugly, awful, scary, dirty, blah, blah, blah, it was -- not one of those folks had actually BEEN at Woodstock!!!! That just pissed me off.
Hell, I even recently heard a woman neighbor of mine telling her 11-year-old daughter that Woodstock was the ultimate "filth experience," and that most of the girls who attended were raped and got pregnant that weekend.
Um.......... this was the era of..... FREE LOVE!!!!!!! No damn REASON for rape! And we had diaphragms and IUDs and The Pill, so there were no more "unwanted" pregnancies than in any other city a half a million strong.
So anyway, I threw together this rundown of my ACTUAL experiences around Woodstock. The next day, CNN called me and had me come to the studios to do a live, on-the-air, on-camera report. Before all that, maybe for the 20th anniversary, I'd done lengthy interviews with Jack Curry, who subsequently wrote a book about Woodstock, and two of the chapters were named my name. Damned if I can remember the name of that book, though! Then, because of THAT, for the 25th anniversary, ABC (New York) gave me a call and sent out a crew to interview me for "Turning Point," which was a one-hour weekly news program. Then, last year -- in preparation for this year's 40th anniversary -- a film crew flew in from Germany and interviewed me for their 90-minute documentary, which still hasn't been released here in the States, but got good airing time in Europe.
These experiences -- while not in the least mind-blowing -- were good for me, because I got to re-live a great deal of my happy time during Woodstock.
There really will never be another Woodstock... nor SHOULD there be.

– When does a child become aware of sharing, fairness and selflessness? A new study suggests that children may understand these traits, and practice them, as early as 15 months.
An interesting study, published online in journal PLoS ONE, found that 15-month-old babies could recognize unfair treatment. This recognition may also be linked to their willingness to share.– When does a child become aware of sharing, fairness and selflessness? A new... more

Internet hackers have acquired a dubious reputation for piracy, sabotage and the spilling of sensitive secrets, but an authoritative Vatican publication appears to rehabilitate them and traces parallels between hacker philosophy and the teachings of Christianity. The surprisingly charitable view of hackers was expressed by the Jesuit priest Father Antonio Spadaro in an article for the fortnightly magazine Civilta Cattolica, the text of which is vetted by the Vatican Secretariat of State prior to publication. http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/free-stuff/42939-vatican-says-computer-hackers-are-more-saint-than-sinnerInternet hackers have acquired a dubious reputation for piracy, sabotage and the... more

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Facebook is temporarily disabling a feature that gave app developers access to some of the most sensitive personal data it possesses: Members' addresses and phone numbers.
The company had slipped the feature in quietly, announcing it at the end of last week in a post on its developer blog. But late Monday, Facebook said it is suspending the feature until it can fine-tune how it works.
"Over the weekend, we got some useful feedback that we could make people more clearly aware of when they are granting access to this data," Facebook wrote on its developer blog. "We agree, and we are making changes to help ensure you only share this information when you intend to do so."
Those changes will roll out "in the next few weeks," Facebook said. In the meantime, it has suspended the phone number and address gathering option.
In its blog post last week describing the new feature, Facebook said members would need to explicitly grant permission for apps to tap into their contact information. And they would only be able to grant that permission for their own data -- users can't choose to allow access to their friends' contact information.
But worries immediately arose that this would not be enough of a shield. Facebook frequently comes under fire for its constantly changing privacy policies, and many users find the tools it makes available for adjusting privacy settings very confusing.
Privacy researcher Christopher Soghoian thinks Facebook botched the message by publicizing the change on its developer's blog.
"They should have had an announcement: 'This is why were doing this, and is why it's not a privacy problem,'" he says.
The blog Inside Facebook, which obsessively tracks news about the social network, also said the new addition didn't provide users with enough context.
"The biggest problem with access to contact information is that the permission requests for these highly sensitive data fields are not distinguished from requests for more benign data like a user's Event RSVPs or privileges like publishing to their stream," Inside Facebook writer Josh Constine said.NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Facebook is temporarily disabling a feature that gave app... more

About AmpleHarvest.org
Shortly after I became the director of the West Milford Community Garden in late 2008, I learned that some of our garden plot holders -- like millions of backyard gardeners nationwide -- left large amounts of their garden produce unharvested when they grew more than they could possibly use.
Aware that hunger is a problem in our community, I suggested that we created a committee that would help to gather this extra food and deliver it to local food pantries. The program was named Ample Harvest.
Food pantries however were hard to find, in large part because most operate without an Internet site or yellow page listing. Google for example listed the nearest food pantry as being in a town 25 miles away, even though our own town had several of them. And it turns out this same challenge was faced by backyard gardeners nationwide wishing to share their bounty.
To address this dilemma, we created the AmpleHarvest.org Campaign, a nationwide effort to educate, encourage and enable gardeners with extra extra produce to easily donate to a local food pantry. AmpleHarvest.org gives food pantries the opportunity to be listed in a central nationwide directory so that gardeners can share their fresh produce and, garden-by-garden, help diminish hunger in America
Since it's rollout in May 2009, the AmpleHarvest.org Campaign has continued to grow.About AmpleHarvest.org

In part two of our series entitled, "Why did you build that feature?" I'm tackling our URL shortener and the Current Bar. We posted a quick run-through for these features last week, but considering the questions surrounding them it felt right to take a closer look.
"Why make a shortener that is 26 characters when others are much shorter?"
Great question. Our URL shortener is truly designed with one intent in mind: providing a better experience when viewing and sharing Current.com content. While it's not the shortest shortener around, at 26 characters this is a massive improvement -- shaving off 11 characters from the shortest Current.com URL previously available. But shortening is really just half of the feature here. Our shortened URLs combine with our new Current Bar to make browsing, sharing, and discussing content on Current much more enjoyable.
Take this story on Current.com for example, "Last of Africa's desert elephants ravaged by severe drought."
Comparison of Current.com shortener and Current Bar use on source stories from Current.com
Originally, when you would click on source URLs, a new window would pop open to load the source article. This still happens, however there are two distinct changes to this flow now -- when you click on the source URL (found below the title of the story) or the image of a story on Current.com it will open the original story in a new window/tab along with the Current Bar at the top of the page, and a shortened URL in your browser bar (see below).
That's right, the original source URL is automatically shortened for you when you click through from Current.com -- just in case you decide to share the story with someone else via Facebook or Twitter.
So, why the Current Bar at the top of the page? The Current Bar offers voting buttons, the title and full source link, and buttons to respond to the discussion back on Current.com and to share the story with others via your various social networks.
Note: We've received a lot of feedback from our community around the use of voting on Current.com, specifically around the fact that many people in our community tend to vote on items without reading the original source story, OR that they click through to read the full source and forget to vote on the story.
The Current Bar attempts to solve for this problem. Gone are the days of clicking through to read the source only to forget to vote or respond back on Current. Have faith, the Bar is there to help remind you. Plus, it gives you an easy way to jump back into the discussion on Current.com after reading the story for yourself.
As Steph pointed out last week, the shortener can also be used to shorten any URL for any story you happen to find around the web. So for example, if you are reading a great article about how the creators of Delgo are hinting at a lawsuit after watching the trailer for Avatar, you have a few options:
Take the original link:
http://www.movieline.com/2009/08/delgo-creators-hint-at-lawsuit-over-avatar-connection.php
Type in current.com/ between the // (doubleslash) and the www in the original URL, and you get this:
http://current.com/www.movieline.com/2009/08/delgo-creators-hint-at-lawsuit-over-avatar-connection.php
When you browse to this new link you will see our shortener in action, and you'll end up creating this URL:
http://current.com/1eg6m4c
At this point, the story still hasn't been submitted to Current.com, so the Current Bar looks a little different:
You can submit it easily by clicking the "Add to Current" button. If you don't want to add it yourself, you can still use the shortened Current.com URL to share the story with people on other social networks. Who knows, maybe one of your followers or friends will submit it to Current for you.
So what are you waiting for? Try it out for yourself, create and share some shortened Current URLs, and most importantly shoot us some feedback and let us know what you think! In part two of our series entitled, "Why did you build that feature?"... more
