This is so cool. Hank Torres is paralyzed from the shoulder down but with the use of Swype and a head tracking device he was able to set the Guinness World Record for fastest hands free typing.
Here's the event organizer explaining Hank's situation:
Hank damaged his spinal cord between the 4th and 5th cervical vertebrae making him a "C4-5 quad". "From the shoulders down" means the nervous system below that point on his spine isn't connected. He thankfully has some control of his arms, but no feeling or control in his hands, making it impossible to type. Thus the need for a hands-free system.
I think as much as we try to advance technologically, we shouldn't marry ourselves to the old ways of doing things. Thinking outside the box, like what Swype does, is just as important because sometimes it can really change the game. Congrats Hank. This is so cool. “The Butterfly Circus” is a deeply touching short film directed by Joshua Weigel, which recently won the $100,000 grand prize at the Doorpost Film Project. In the depths of the Great Depression, the ringmaster of a renowned circus leads his troupe through the devastated American landscape, lifting the spirits of audiences all along the way. During their travels they encounter, Will, a quadriplegic who is living out his life in a cruel carnival sideshow. It’s only when Will joins up with the Butterfly Circus that he acquires a drive to hope against everything he has ever believed, finally being able to realize his true potential.
There are just no words that can really capture the emotional richness of this film. You'll have to see it to believe it, and maybe then to believe a little more in yourself as well.
This piece includes a number of high-resolution photographs, as well as the masterful short film, “The Butterfly Circus.”

About Prescription4Love.com:
Ricky Durham’s brother Keith was the inspiration for Prescription4Love. Keith battled Crohn’s Disease (under IBD) and at times weighed between 75-125 lbs. His normal weight was around 150 lbs. It was difficult for him to disclose his disease to anyone, especially the reality of using a colostomy bag. Wanting to help his brother connect with others, especially others with the same illness, Ricky Durham created Prescription4Love. Although Keith passed away July 15, 2004, he was pleased with the work his brother had begun. Now 6 years later, Prescription4Love has helped over 8,000 people find love and friendship.
Prescription4Love and Ricky Durham are featured in Daryn Kagan’s (from CNN) new book “What’s Possible: 50 True Stories of People Who Dared to Dream They Could Make a Difference”.

Travis Jecker broke his neck in a dirt bike accident in 2005. He chose not to conform to the "normal" way of doing things like get a van, get a boring desk job, etc. He is inspiring because he has figured out how to live as a quadriplegic and be "cool" at the same time.Travis Jecker broke his neck in a dirt bike accident in 2005.
