Over the weekend, a Saudi Arabian judge declared that husbands can slap their wives on the face if they spend too much money. What's ironic and unnerving about this story, besides the obvious, is that he was speaking at a conference on domestic violence and trying to explain that women were partly to blame for the rise in spousal abuse.
“If a person gives SR1,200 [$320] to his wife and she spends SR900 [$240] to purchase an abaya [a full black gown worn mostly with a face veil or head covering] from a brand shop and if her husband slaps her on the face as a reaction to her action, she deserves that punishment,” the judge said, according to an Arab News account.
Understandably, this has brought the issue of religiously mandated violence against women back into the spotlight. Bloggers have been talking about this story and criticizing the judge's statements. Asra Q. Nomani from the Daily beast calls this issue "part of a continuum of literalist interpretation of the Quran that includes banning women from driving, segregating women, allowing forced marriages of underage girls, and, ultimately, sanctioning intolerance and targeted violence against civilians of the kind perpetuated by Al Qaeda. The way I see it, the Muslim world will be stuck in the dark ages as long as men with ideologies like this judge’s remain in positions of power, just as the West was crippled as long as preachers, judges, and politicians argued that the Bible sanctioned slavery, segregation, and sexism."
I think she makes some interesting comparisons to Western cultures, but she mentions them as if they've been overcome. But I'd argue that, particularly in the case of sexism, we still haven't seen the end of them. While Western laws don't justify outright physical violence towards women, the ongoing debate over abortion is one example where we're still "crippled" by outdated ideologies. And what about gay marriage? I can't think of a more prevalent issue in the Western world that stems from this literalist interpretation of a religious text (this time, the Bible) that Nomani suggests. I think that while we continue to denounce the outrageous Muslim values upheld by people like this Saudi judge, we cannot lose sight of the sexist injustices that are happening right here at home. What do you think?Over the weekend, a Saudi Arabian judge declared that husbands can slap their wives on... more

You must see this to believe it. It was on the ABC Newser today. This is beyond torture for such a small crime. But remember, in Saudia Arabia, punishment for DUI is death by firing squad. That is posted at The Drivers License office!
This is difficult to watch. I don't know how this man survived but he was in the hospital for months. He was shot all around his body to scare him, sand filled his mouth, beaten with a board bearing a NAIL, and after even more sadistic torture, he was run over by Shiek Issa several times in his big luxury car. Even the Police share in the torture. You must see this to believe it. It was on the ABC Newser today. This is beyond... more

We worry about losing rights. And we should. It is a slippery slope. But what could cause man to be so full of hate to believe that their God appoints them to be judge, jury and executioner. I know there are articles about this but a picture is worth a thousand words. Watch as the Taliban decide that this couple who were "eloping" decided instead that they needed to die immediately. The Taliban have moved as close as 60 miles from Pakistan where their nuclear weapons are. I have been against going back into that area because the terrain makes it so difficult for our military and many more will die. Do you think these guys would use the nukes if they could get their hands on them?
For those against "enhanced interrogation"...would you be against it if they were headed to our country to dish out their brand of justice and we could foil their plot to blow up America? We worry about losing rights. And we should. It is a slippery slope. But what could... more

After a one-hour touchy , warm interview. The detainees were asked serious questions:
1. What do you think of the USA
2. Where would you like to live (most answered Washington DC) (hmmm)
3. Set in action a plan for a new start (wow, no other country will take them. UK agreed to ONE)
How stupid can we be????????????????
Isn't there a "half way house" or something. Obama could convince no one on his trip to agree to take them. Even those who welcome them with open arms. After a one-hour touchy , warm interview. The detainees were asked serious questions:... more

I never thought I would see the day when Heads of State, Judges, and other people in authority would try to appease Terrorists of any faith, much less a faith where their "Bible" gives them instructions to kill anyone, man, woman, child, society that does not share their beliefs.
Wake up people before this happens in what was know as the "Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave"!!!
More Muslim Pedophiles Arrested in Britain
On March 27, 2009 6 MUSLIM men (more coming) were arrested for the sexual exploitation and rape of little/young girls. - once again this despicable pedophile ring is located in Northern Britain. As usual, the police were obsessively concerned with muslim neighborhood sensitivities & political correctness -
"A police spokesman said that it was important to maintain a low profile in order to keep the impact and disturbance caused to surrounding communities to a minimum. He added: "Uniformed officers from the Safer Neighbourhood Teams will be issuing leaflets to residents following the raid to reassure them and explain some details of the operation." see article below
Recall from August 2007 where mother's had to beg police to intervene and stop the muslim men exploiting their young daughters:
"A hidden world in which Asian men “groom” young white girls for sex has been exposed with the jailing yesterday of two men for child-abuse offences.
Zulfqar Hussain, 46, and Qaiser Naveed, 32, from east Lancashire, were each jailed for five years and eight months after exploiting two girls aged under 16 by plying them with alcohol and drugs before having sex with them.
Parents have complained that in parts of the country with large Asian communities white girls as young as 12 are being targeted for sex by older Asian men yet the authorities are unwilling to act because of fears of being labelled racist.
...Although campaigners claim that hundreds of young girls are already being passed around men within the Asian community for sex, she said that attempts to raise the problem with community leaders had met with little success, with most of them being in a state of denial about it." LINK
Clearly Hussain and Naveed were and are the "tip of the iceberg" when it comes to predatory muslim men raping British little girls. Interesting to note that a television documentary that exposed the huge numbers of Pakistani muslim men involved in this pedophilia ring was stopped - twice- from being televised - eventually it was shown. Some surmise upcoming elections played a role in its initial cancellations.
Apparently the feckless British police and vote whoring politicians, as shown by their persistent refusal to publicly condemn & swiftly deal with such actions, are happy to continue to keep (gangs of) muslim pedophile's exploitation and rape of young girls "hidden".I never thought I would see the day when Heads of State, Judges, and other people in... more

What could be the possible reason for these 2 countries to now own the power to cut off our power?? Do they sense that we are now weak and it would be a great time to finish us off?
They don't know how innovative we are. If we have a problem, we will go over it, around it or through it.
Toronto recently revealed the presence of GhostNet, a global cyber-spy network run from China that has infiltrated 103 countries and infected dozens of computers every month.
No conspiracy theory meant.
Just different opinions on why they would both do this???What could be the possible reason for these 2 countries to now own the power to cut... more

Someone sent this to me. I am reserving judgement. Would like to hear others thoughts/comments.
Also, just learned that www.markdice.com is the head of the "Resistance Movement".
All I am saying is let's read/see everything and form our own opinions.
Americans today are known for complacency and I could see it would be easy to change our country and never miss a beat. We have been too busy trying to survive, all the "noise" is filtered out.Someone sent this to me. I am reserving judgement. Would like to hear others... more

Someone told me about this today, so I did some research. I don't like posting rumors, myths, or conspiracies. However, this has come up a number of times and many sources are saying the same thing.
Obama's newly appointed legal advisor thinks that "Sharia Law" would go along fine with our Constitution.
Any input appreciated. I find this utterly disturbing on every level. I believe there would be a Revolution if anyone dared to do this to our country. If that happens , it will be 'game over' for U.S.A.
Obama tried to impose it on Kenya just before running for office.
I understand they are implementing Sharia Law in the U.K. Is this part of the "New World Order" we keep hearing about??Someone told me about this today, so I did some research. I don't like posting... more

KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Amid mounting pressure from the West, Afghan President Hamid Karzai says his government will review a recently approved version of a law that critics say legalizes marital rape and the U.S. president has called "abhorrent."
"We understand the concerns of our allies in the international community," Karzai told reporters Saturday.
The minister of justice would study the draft, he said.
"If there is anything that is of concern to us then we will definitely take action in consultation with our [religious clerics] and send it back to the parliament," Karzai said. "This is something that we are also serious about and we should not allow."
Karzai's news conference was in response to a series of news reports by Western media since the president signed the law last month.
He specifically mentioned a March 31 story by London-based The Independent, which called the law "a massive blow for women's rights" and cited critics who said Karzai "rushed" the bill through parliament in hopes of appeasing Islamic fundamentalists ahead of August elections.
Human rights groups and news reports consistently refer to a report from the U.N. Development Fund for Women which reportedly stated that the legislation -- a piece of sharia law, or Islamic law -- that affects the Shiite community in the predominantly Sunni nation "legalizes the rape of a wife by her husband" by allowing men to force sexual intercourse on their spouses.
Shiites make up roughly 10 percent of Afghanistan's population.
Western leaders attending a NATO conference Saturday also signaled their disapproval of the legislation.
"I think this law is abhorrent," U.S. President Obama said in Strasbourg, France. "We think that it is very important for us to be sensitive to local culture, but we also think that there are certain basic principles that all nations should uphold, and respect for women and respect for their freedom and integrity is an important principle."
French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel agreed, with the latter saying, "We very much hope that the draft piece of legislation is to be withdrawn."
The law was drafted by Afghanistan's conservative lawmakers after spending more than a year off and on the parliament's daily agenda. Shia Muslims have been practicing their form of Islam for centuries in Afghanistan, but this law allows them to preserve their identity among the majority Sunni population, one parliamentarian said.
Among its provisions are that women must ask a male relative to leave the house.
"What my fear is, women and children of Afghanistan are always the victims of political games," Afghan lawmaker Fawzia Koofi told CNN in a recent interview. "I mean, they don't have a gun to fight, they cannot create a mess."
Koofi, and other critics of the law, hope that the supreme court will rule that the legislation is at odds with the Afghan constitution, which promises equal rights to all citizens -- male or female.
Still, despite the international outcry against the bill, many in Afghanistan remain unaware of it. Support can be found among those who do, especially the Shiite population.
"Shia people are in Afghanistan," Shia resident Mohammad Zahir said. "They are a part of Afghanistan and there needs to be a law that they go by and follow."KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Amid mounting pressure from the West, Afghan President... more

The report, presented on yesterday at a National Centre for Excellence in Islamic Studies conference at the University of Melbourne, alleged that some Victorian imams:
* Apply Sharia law only where it benefits men;
* Hinder police investigations of domestic violence claims; and
* Knowingly perform polygamous marriages, which allow a second wife to claim Centrelink

A young woman recently stoned to death in Somalia first pleaded for her life, a witness has told the BBC.
"Don't kill me, don't kill me," she said, according to the man who wanted to remain anonymous. A few minutes later, more than 50 men threw stones.
Human rights group Amnesty International says the victim was a 13-year-old girl who had been raped.
Initial reports had said she was a 23-year-old woman who had confessed to adultery before a Sharia court.
The witness says she was forced into a hole, buried up to her neck then pelted with stones until she died in front of more than 1,000 people.
Cameras were banned from the public stoning, but print and radio journalists who were allowed to attend estimated that the woman, Aisha Ibrahim Duhulow, was 23 years old.
However, Amnesty said it had learned she was 13, and that her father had said she was raped by three men. A young woman recently stoned to death in Somalia first pleaded for her life, a... more

A Muslim cleric in Saudi Arabia has called on women to wear a full veil, or niqab, that reveals only one eye.
Sheikh Muhammad al-Habadan said showing both eyes encouraged women to use eye make-up to look seductive.
The question of how much of her face a woman should cover is a controversial topic in many Muslim societies.
The niqab is more common in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf, but women in much of the Muslim Middle East wear a headscarf which covers only their hair.
Sheikh Habadan, an ultra-conservative cleric who is said to have wide influence among religious Saudis, was answering questions on the Muslim satellite channel al-Majd. A Muslim cleric in Saudi Arabia has called on women to wear a full veil, or niqab,... more

Well, he sort of weighs in.
In what some may see as a slight 'U-turn' from the UK government, the PM Gordon Brown has praised the Archbishop of Canterbury, calling him a man of "great integrity" with a "dedication to public and community service."
According to Reuters, a government minister accused the Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams of concocting "a recipe for disaster" for suggesting the introduction in Britain of some aspects of sharia was unavoidable.
It seems the press may have jumped too quickly at what the Archbishop 'allegedly' said.
