Economy air travel need no longer be referred to as "cattle class," and passengers don't have to squeeze into tight seats.
Beginning next year, money-conscious long-haul travelers can take "cuddle class" and book a row of seats that convert into a couch or bed.
Planned by Air New Zealand for trans-Pacific flights, the "Skycouch" is a row of three regular seats redesigned to create a space for children to play or a flat surface for adults to relax and sleep.

Is speed dating not fast enough for you? How does 600mph sound? Okay, maybe not quite at the speed of sound but what's a hundred-or-so miles per hour between friends?
Air New Zealand are flying Californian singles to the land of Shortland Street in what they've dubbed 'the world's first matchmaking flight'.
The Kiwi carrier will be throwing a party at the gate just before the lonely hearts board their love flight. Whilst up in the clouds they'll be treated to 'themed' food and drink, as well as entertainment and games. What these involve is anyone's guess - this is, after all, the airline that recently aired a TV ad showing pilots and crew with nothing but smiles on their faces and paint on their bodies.
For those unfortunate enough not to pull whilst airborne - there's the 'Great Matchmaking Ball' to attend in Auckland. Is speed dating not fast enough for you? How does 600mph sound? Okay, maybe not... more

Air New Zealand has gone to great lengths to catch the attention of air travellers - as their crew and chief executive strip off for an advert.
Air New Zealand CEO Rob Fyfe and seven airline staff are seen wearing only a body painted version of their uniforms as they go about their daily work in a video advert set to the sounds of a song called 'Under My Skin'.
The reason for the stunt, says the airline, is to show that they have 'nothing to hide' in the way of extra charges as opposed to a number of budget airlines.

The search for an environmentally friendly fuel for airplanes took a leap forward today with the world's first flight powered by a second-generation biofuel, derived from plants that do not compete with food crops.
An Air New Zealand jumbo jet left Auckland just before midnight GMT with a 50-50 mix of jet fuel and oil from jatropha trees in one of its four engines. The two-hour test flight, which took the Boeing 747 over the Hauraki Gulf, showed that the jatropha biofuel was suitable for use in airplanes without the need for any modifications of the engines. It forms part of the airline's plan to source 10% of its fuel from sustainable sources by 2013.
The flight was completed as the US airline Continental announced its own plans to test second-generation biofuels: next week it will fly a plane over the Gulf of Mexico with fuel derived from algae.
Air New Zealand's biofuel was made from jatropha nuts, which are up to 40% oil, harvested from trees grown on marginal land in India, Mozambique, Malawi and Tanzania. The fuel was pre-tested to show that it was suitable for airplanes, freezing at -47C and burning at 38C.The search for an environmentally friendly fuel for airplanes took a leap forward... more
