BREAKING: Joe SOLMONESE to leave HRC in December.
This is a Pam's House Blend exclusive.
Yes, it's the end of an era. The Blend has learned, from a trusted source in a position to know the details, that Joe Solmonese, President of the Human Rights Campaign, the largest national lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization in the country, will announce his departure next Tuesday. Solmonese will reportedly step down from the organization in December of this year.
His departure also signals, according to our source, the beginning of a larger staff shake-up in the HRC. The Blend can also report that a replacement executive director has been identified -- it will be someone who is not currently on the HRC's staff, but is currently a paid consultant that has worked with the civil rights group for some time.
During his tenure, the Human Rights Campaign has become a bedrock institution that has played a role in successes -- a hate crimes law passed, the legislative repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell -- the extent of its leadership and success also depends on your point of view and knowledge of the back stories related to the hard work to make these gains happen

Presbyterian Church (USA) Now Allows LGBT Clergy to Serve as Ministers
Today the decision of the Presbyterian Church (USA) to remove all barriers to the ordination of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people as ministers and lay leaders, which was voted on and passed in May, goes into effect. It is a historic day in the Church. Discrimination will no longer stand in the way of those who have received the calling to ministry.
The Presbyterian Church (USA) is another denomination that has seen a new day in the intersection of faith and sexual orientation and gender identity. This is not only good for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people but it is good for the soul of the church. LGBT Presbyterians have been some of the most prophetic and faithful leaders within the Presbyterian Church and now they can bring their faith and their humanity fully into the work of building loving, God-affirming communities. We thank More Light Presbyterians, Covenant Network of Presbyterians, That All May Freely Serve, Presbyterian Welcome, and Presbyterian Voices for Justice for their hard work and dedication in removing discrimination from the Presbyterian Church (USA).http://tinyurl.com/6eun37uToday the decision of the Presbyterian Church (USA) to remove all barriers to the... more-

Human Rights Campaign Jams MN Senate Computers with 100,000 Marriage Equality Emails
HRC Jams MN Senate Computers with 100,000 marriage equality emails

By Kevin Nix
May 23rd, 2011 at 5:40 pm
From star reporter Andy Birkey at the Minnesota Independent.
Sen. Scott Dibble told Minnesota Public Radio that 100,000 emails sent to legislators by gay marriage supporters were clogging the servers and that the Senate IT department was set to delete them Monday morning. The emails, sent through the Human Rights Campaign, a national LGBT rights group, chided Republicans and a handful of DFLers who voted Saturday night to put a constitutional ban on gay marriage on the ballot in 2012. Secretary of the Senate Cal Ludeman said the emails were being help in a spam filter and that his office was workign to get them back into the system.
“Hundreds of thousands of emails have come in the aftermath, so many so that the Republican caucus is deleting them before their members even get to see them,” Dibble told MPR.
Sen. Warren Limmer, the chief author of the anti-gay marriage amendment, said, “Not true. Not true. We aren’t wiping off comments of our constituents. That’s just simply not true.”
Sen. Dibble answered back, “That absolutely is true, and that’s exactly what the secretary of the Senate has told us.”
Secretary of the Senate Cal Ludeman tells the Minnesota Independent that the sheer volume of email coming into the system had caused it to crash on Sunday. By early Monday morning 230,000 emails had flooded in, he said, adding that he ordered the IT department to send a large number to a spam filter.
He said that those emails coming in would not be deleted and that they were working to “filter them back in.”
He wasn’t aware which emails were coming in or which ones needed to be sent to a spam filter.
“We are managing the traffic and they’ll be flowed back into the system,” he said.
Already the flood of emails has rankled some legislators. Rep. Tony Cornish, R-Good Thunder, responded to the emails over the weekend in a manner some thought rude.

HRC- Help Stop NOM
Quoted from an email
Hi,
I'm appalled by the bold intimidation campaign launched by the anti-gay National Organization for Marriage. They're threatening judges nationwide, trying to berate them into ruling against marriage equality. Whatever happened to our court system that is fair and free from bitter political campaigns?
Can you imagine if judges based their decisions on the fear of NOM coming after them and getting them fired?
I just added my name to an open letter that will help people understand the truth about what NOM is doing behind the scenes. I hope you'll join me:

NOM Exposed by HRC, Courage Campaign
NOM Exposed, a website launched Tuesday by the Human Rights Campaign and the Courage Campaign, reveals the antigay affiliations of the National Organization for Marriage, discloses its substantial financial resources and provides a dynamic space for activists to fight back.
Based on months of analysis and research drawn from public records, NOM Exposed was created to lay bare what the Washington, D.C.-based organization itself tries to hide through lawsuits like its recent challenges to disclosure laws in Rhode Island, New York and Florida. The site reveals the deep-pocketed donors, such as the Catholic Church and the Mormon Church, who have helped the organization amass almost $10 million in the three years it burst onto the scene with the Proposition 8 battle in California. NOM Exposed also monitors the organization’s current campaigns to defeat equality in states including but not limited to California, New Hampshire, New York, Minnesota, and Iowa.
“NOM has become the leading anti-equality force in this country seemingly overnight,” said Fred Sainz, vice president of communications for HRC, in a conference call with reports Tuesday afternoon. “They’ve thrived on voters knowing nothing about them or who fuels them.”
Among the findings of NOM Exposed, according to a news release from HRC and the Courage Campaign:
- At a time of the country's greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression, NOM's financial growth has been explosive. NOM has amassed huge resources – estimated to reach or exceed $10M in 2010 – from modest beginnings in 2007.
- NOM is a highly secretive organization that tries to not only hide the identity of its political donors from the voting public in state after state, but operates in a way to discourage people from knowing who its key players and associates are.
- NOM has deep connections to the Catholic Church hierarchy, to the Mormon Church, to evangelical right-wing pastors and churches and to those who have a long history of anti-gay rhetoric and activity. These are individuals and organizations which not only oppose same-sex marriage, but oppose domestic partnerships, civil unions, hate crimes protections and even fertility treatments for women because some of those women could be lesbians.
- Since 2008, NOM and its allies have engaged in a radical, nationwide plan to flout long-established campaign finance disclosure laws. This is nothing short of a strategic, coordinated plan to hide NOM's political activities from voters. This effort has prompted several state investigations and resounding legal defeats for NOM.NOM Exposed, a website launched Tuesday by the Human Rights Campaign and the Courage... more-

Gay rights group to offset Target donation
http://shop.hrc.org/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/380x/5e06319eda06f020e43594a9c230972d/H/R/HRC12005_2.jpg
A prominent gay rights organization is sending a chunk of money to liberal groups in Minnesota to offset Target's controversial donation to a pro-Tom Emmer political action committee.
The Human Rights Campaign, based in Washington, D.C., will donate $100,000 to Win Minnesota, a PAC that helps fund ads targeting Emmer, the GOP candidate for governor. They will toss another $20,000 to OutFront Minnesota, a GLBT group, and $30,000 to individual candidates -- including DFLer Mark Dayton.
Dayton expected to attend HRC's annual Twin Cities dinner Saturday night at the Depot Minneapolis Hotel, along with Sens. Al Franken and Amy Klobuchar.
"With all of our success in corporate America, we found ourselves at a crossroads recently during HRC's dispute with Target and Best Buy," HRC president Joe Solmonese said in prepared remarks. "It wasn't easy and it certainly wasn't on our list of things to do, but it was the right thing to do."
HRC had previously pressed Target to make its own offsetting donation to gay rights groups, but the company declined.
"Given the current political and emotionally charged environment, we have concluded that it is best to wait before taking further external action regarding our MN Forward contribution," the company said in a statement last month. "We believe that it is impossible to avoid turning any further actions into a political issue and will use the benefit of time to make thoughtful, careful decisions on how best to move forward."

Gay rights group's talks with Target break down - latimes.com
After the breakdown of its talks with Target Corp., the nation's leading gay rights organization said Monday that it would continue to protest against the company over a donation used to support a Republican gubernatorial candidate with a history of opposing gay rights.
Officials with the Human Rights Campaign said the giant retailer had effectively rejected the group's proposals that Target donate to gay rights organizations to offset the earlier donation.
Target's handling of the confrontation has been closely watched because it is the first case in this election cycle of a company hit by national protests over a campaign donation. The topic is especially sensitive this year because of a Supreme Court decision that allows corporate organizations and unions to use their funds in election campaigns.
Human Rights Campaign is considering whether to suspend Target's 100% rating on its Corporate Equality Index, a measure of corporate hiring diversity policies on a scale of 0% to 100%.
"If their initial contribution was a slap in the face, their refusal to make it right is a punch in the gut, and that's not something that we will soon forget," said Joe Solmonese, the group's president.
Target said it was "best to wait" given the controversy stirred by its donation, which prompted Facebook calls for a boycott and scattered protests outside stores. An anti-boycott site also popped up on Facebook from conservatives supporting Target.
"We believe that it is impossible to avoid turning any further actions into a political issue and will use the benefit of time to make thoughtful, careful decisions on how best to move forward," the company said in a statement.
Target Chief Executive Gregg Steinhafel has told employees that sending a $150,000 donation to the new political group MN Forward was a business decision. The group used Target's funds to help underwrite ads backing Minnesota Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer, who opposes gay marriage and other legislative initiatives sought by gay rights groups.
In response, San Francisco officials threatened to block the construction of two Target stores in the city, where gay advocates have long had strong influence. In addition, MoveOn.org and other left-leaning groups have asked supporters to boycott Target. MoveOn posted a video Monday on YouTube showing a group of its members performing a musical number inside a Seattle Target store.
Republicans and several organizations on the right have complained that Target was the victim of "liberal thuggery."
The ability of corporations to donate on behalf of Republican candidates is of special concern to Democrats in this midterm election. Democrats have outraised Republicans in traditional campaign fundraising, but they fear the advantage may be overwhelmed by corporate giving.
On the right, observers think the unwanted attention Target has received will put a chill on donation plans.
Human Rights Campaign said it had reached two tentative agreements with Target but the retailer backed out. The group said it planned to give $150,000 to organizations that supported candidates in favor of gay rights.
Best Buy Co. has also given to MN Forward. Human Rights Campaign said it was negotiating with Best Buy.After the breakdown of its talks with Target Corp., the nation's leading gay... more-

Best Buy Is Helping Expose Singer Matt Morris. Now He's Returning the Favor About the Anti-Gay Company / Queerty
Matt Morris, the married gay singer-songwriter and one-time Mickey Mouse Club member, was thrilled when Best Buy started airing promo videos for his new record When Everything Breaks Open. Then he found out Best Buy was funding the effort to elect anti-gay Tom Emmer governor of Minnesota.
So Morris — who you might remember from dueting with regular collaborator Justin Timberlake during the Haiti relief telethon — took down the video he originally recorded (with much excitement) of him visiting his local Best Buy, and replaced it with the one above. So while he doesn't want you to ban Best Buy outright — after all, he wants you to go into the store and buy his CD — he would love for you to take his record off the rack and replace it with some informational material about what the money you spend in Best Buy goes toward.Matt Morris, the married gay singer-songwriter and one-time Mickey Mouse Club member,... more-

U.N. Committee Rejects Gay Organization
The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission faces many hurdles to be recognized by the United Nations, specifically from socially conservative nations.
A U.N. committee including Egypt, Sudan, Qatar, Pakistan, China, Russia, Angola, Burundi, and Sudan voted against IGLHRC receiving "consultative status," according to Reuters. http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE6526BQ20100604
Both the United States and the United Kingdom voted to support IGLHRC.
The United States released a statement acknowledging the importance of the nongovernmental organization: "This NGO is committed to combating discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity."
The U.N. committee, composed of 19 member nations, may reexamine IGLHRC sooner rather than later. If the Economic and Social Council, where IGLHRC initially applied for status, votes to validate the group, it may increase the group's chances of receiving U.N. recognition. The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission faces many hurdles to be... more-

Obama Orders Visitation Rights for Same Sex Couples
Via Washington Post
"President Obama on Thursday signed a memorandum requiring hospitals to allow gays and lesbians to have non-family visitors and to grant their partners medical power of attorney. The president ordered the Department of Health and Human Services to prohibit discrimination in hospital visitation. The memo is scheduled to be made public Friday morning, according to an administration official and another source familiar with the White House decision. An official said the new rule will affect any hospital that receives Medicare or Medicaid funding."
In the memo the President said "Every day, all across America, patients are denied the kindnesses and caring of a loved one at their sides whether in a sudden medical emergency or a prolonged hospital stay."
UPDATE:
On Anderson Cooper 360, Janice Langbehn discussed how her story inspired the White House to make this order. Langbehn received a call from President Obama today, who apologized for the ordeal that she had gone through at a Jackson, Florida hospital. She was denied access to her partner her, despite having power of attorney and other legal documents that should have granted her medical access. Langbehn's was not allowed to see her partner until just moments before her death.
Langbehn says that Lisa, her partner's death, "was not in vain." She appreciates the apology from President Obama despite not having received an apology from the hospital, which announced this week that they have changed their access policy to include LGBT families.
The Human Rights Campaign, a lobby group that specializes in LGBT issues has stated that they have been "working on the request––" with the White House "for months."
Full Body of the Memorandum:
MEMORANDUM FOR THE SECRETARY OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES
SUBJECT: Respecting the Rights of Hospital Patients to Receive Visitors and to Designate Surrogate Decision Makers for Medical Emergencies
There are few moments in our lives that call for greater compassion and companionship than when a loved one is admitted to the hospital. In these hours of need and moments of pain and anxiety, all of us would hope to have a hand to hold, a shoulder on which to lean -- a loved one to be there for us, as we would be there for them.
Yet every day, all across America, patients are denied the kindnesses and caring of a loved one at their sides -- whether in a sudden medical emergency or a prolonged hospital stay. Often, a widow or widower with no children is denied the support and comfort of a good friend. Members of religious orders are sometimes unable to choose someone other than an immediate family member to visit them and make medical decisions on their behalf. Also uniquely affected are gay and lesbian Americans who are often barred from the bedsides of the partners with whom they may have spent decades of their lives -- unable to be there for the person they love, and unable to act as a legal surrogate if their partner is incapacitated.
For all of these Americans, the failure to have their wishes respected concerning who may visit them or make medical decisions on their behalf has real consequences. It means that doctors and nurses do not always have the best information about patients' medications and medical histories and that friends and certain family members are unable to serve as intermediaries to help communicate patients' needs. It means that a stressful and at times terrifying experience for patients is senselessly compounded by indignity and unfairness. And it means that all too often, people are made to suffer or even to pass away alone, denied the comfort of companionship in their final moments while a loved one is left worrying and pacing down the hall.
Many States have taken steps to try to put an end to these problems. North Carolina recently amended its Patients' Bill of Rights to give each patient "the right to designate visitors who shall receive the same visitation privileges as the patient's immediate family members, regardless of whether the visitors are legally related to the patient" -- a right that applies in every hospital in the State. Delaware, Nebraska, and Minnesota have adopted similar laws.
My Administration can expand on these important steps to ensure that patients can receive compassionate care and equal treatment during their hospital stays. By this memorandum, I request that you take the following steps:
1. Initiate appropriate rulemaking, pursuant to your authority under 42 U.S.C. 1395x and other relevant provisions of law, to ensure that hospitals that participate in Medicare or Medicaid respect the rights of patients to designate visitors. It should be made clear that designated visitors, including individuals designated by legally valid advance directives (such as durable powers of attorney and health care proxies), should enjoy visitation privileges that are no more restrictive than those that immediate family members enjoy. You should also provide that participating hospitals may not deny visitation privileges on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability. The rulemaking should take into account the need for hospitals to restrict visitation in medically appropriate circumstances as well as the clinical decisions that medical professionals make about a patient's care or treatment.
2. Ensure that all hospitals participating in Medicare or Medicaid are in full compliance with regulations, codified at 42 CFR 482.13 and 42 CFR 489.102(a), promulgated to guarantee that all patients' advance directives, such as durable powers of attorney and health care proxies, are respected, and that patients' representatives otherwise have the right to make informed decisions regarding patients' care. Additionally, I request that you issue new guidelines, pursuant to your authority under 42 U.S.C. 1395cc and other relevant provisions of law, and provide technical assistance on how hospitals participating in Medicare or Medicaid can best comply with the regulations and take any additional appropriate measures to fully enforce the regulations.
3. Provide additional recommendations to me, within 180 days of the date of this memorandum, on actions the Department of Health and Human Services can take to address hospital visitation, medical decisionmaking, or other health care issues that affect LGBT patients and their families. This memorandum is not intended to, and does not, create any right or benefit, substantive or procedural, enforceable at law or in equity by any party against the United States, its departments, agencies, or entities, its officers, employees, or agents, or any other person.
You are hereby authorized and directed to publish this memorandum in the Federal Register.

When will Obama end Don't Ask Don't Tell?
This weekend was the Human Rights Campaign gathering in DC. There was a gala dinner and a big gay march. President Obama gave a speech at the dinner and promised (again) to end "Don't Ask Don't Tell". It was an important night for Obama, who's commitment to the gay rights movement has been in question lately. Here's Part One of the speech:
(It's worth watching at least the very beginning where Obama cracks a joke about how honored he is to open for Lady Gaga. Certainly knows how to charm a room, doesn't he?)
So that was Saturday night and then Sunday there was the big march. And meanwhile online, people were pointing out that the speech Obama gave was more or less a recycled campaign speech.
And so not 24 hours after the speech came this from CNBC Chief Washington Correspondent John Harwood who said the Obama Administration wasn't worried about gay activists. He said:
Barack Obama is doing well with 90% or more of Democrats so the White House views this opposition as really part of the Internet left fringe....For a sign of how seriously the White House does or doesn't take this opposition, one adviser told me those bloggers need to take off the pajamas, get dressed, and realize that governing a closely divided country is complicated and difficult.
Which is perhaps a good point. Obama's approval ratings are still looking good, and he's got a lot of other big ticket items on his plate right now. And being in the middle of two wars and with the Administration's relationship with the military seemingly strained of late, maybe they don't want to force through a big change to existing military policy.
So when will the time be right? When do you think Obama will end Don't Ask Don't Tell? When do you think he should? Comment over here on Current News.

GORDON DUFF: SABROSKY INTERVIEW TIES ISRAEL TO 9/11 : Veterans Today
DR ALAN SABROSKY, FORMER DIRECTOR OF STUDIES AT THE US ARMY WAR COLLEGE
“ISRAEL DID IT”
By Gordon Duff STAFF WRITER/Senior Editor
Meet Dr. Alan Sabrosky, a brave man, a USMC Vietnam vet, an American of Jewish ancestry and someone devoted to the security of the United States at any cost. Ask any Jew what it takes to stand up against the most powerful and ruthless group in the world, the Israeli lobby inside the United States.
Sabrosky has been calling for a new 9/11 investigation for some time. What makes him unique is that we have a Jew who can hardly be called “self-hating” or “anti-Semitic” or against Israel. He is consistent in everything he says. His point is that you are an American or you are an Israeli but you can’t be both, especially now with Zionism turning Israeli foreign policy into a “runaway train.” 9/11, as Sabrosky sees it was the watershed in a relationship between America and Israel that has gone from bad to unsurviveable, especially for America. He contents that AIPAC exercises near total control over the electoral process in America through the ability to outspend any other group and destroy anyone who stands against them.
The unwillingness of the US to stand with the international community on humanitarian and war crime issues where Israel is found in continual violation is, to Sabrosky, a critial issue. In discussion the US and her lack of support for the Goldstone Report, Sabrosky says:
US criticism of the HRC resolution should be disregarded, as Washington only parrots Israel’s wishes here…
… it might have been better to have included Goldstone’s condemnation of Hamas offenses as well, but it is legitimate as it stands for five reasons: (1) Israel committed the great majority of the violations; (2) Israel had an overwhelming preponderance of military power; (3) Palestinians suffered almost all of the death and destruction; (4) Israel has a long, sordid history of ignoring UN commissions and resolutions, and of attacking UN facilities and killing UN staff, as when the clearly marked UNRWA facility in Gaza was bombed; and (5) the HRC focus is properly on the actions of the oppressor (Israel) and not on those of the oppressed (the Palestinians).
Another is that it did not accord Israel the right of self-defense. But Israel’s claim to self-defense in its savaging of Gaza is specious, because Israel — like all occupiers and oppressors — has no inherent right of self-defense against its victims. Who, for instance, would have accepted Nazi Germany’s assertion that its brutal reprisals against the Czechs for their assassination of a Nazi commander named Reinhard Heydrich was an exercise in self-defense? No one, and no one should accept Israel’s claim, either.
A third is that holding Israel accountable for its actions will somehow endanger the Middle East peace process. But there is no peace process, simply meaningless discussions to the dead end (for Palestinians and the rest of the region) of Israeli hegemony, and under Netanyahu or any electable government in Israel, there is not and cannot be one. There will be an enforced peace imposed from outside of the Middle East, over the objections and obstruction of Israel, or there will be none at all.
ZIONISM AND ISRAELI NATIONALISM
This is how Sabrosky describes the nature of Jewish nationalism as described within the term we call “Zionism”:
The differences between Jewish nationalism (Zionism) and that of other countries and cultures here I think are fourfold:
1. Zionism is a real witches’ brew of xenophobia, racism, ultra-nationalism and militarism that places it way outside of a “mere” nationalist context — for example, when I was in Ireland (both parts) I saw no indication whatsoever that the Provisional Irish Republican Army or anyone else pressing for a united Ireland had a shred of design on shoving Protestants into camps or out of the country, although there may well have been a handful who thought that way — and goes far beyond the misery for others professed by the Nazis;
2. Zionism undermines civic loyalty among its adherents in other countries in a way that other nationalist movements (and even ultra-nationalist movements like Nazism) did not — e.g. a large majority of American Jews, including those who are not openly dual citizens, espouse a form of political bigamy called “dual loyalty” (to Israel and the US) that is every bit as dishonest as marital bigamy, attempts to finesse the precedence they give to Israel over the US (lots of Rahm Emanuels out there who served in the Israeli army but NOT in the US armed forces), and has absolutely no parallel in the sense of national or cultural identity espoused by any other definable ethnic or racial group in America — even the Nazi Bund in the US disappeared once Germany and the US went to war, with almost all of its members volunteering for the US armed forces;
3. The “enemy” of normal nationalist movements is the occupying power and perhaps its allies, and once independence is achieved, normal relations with the occupying power are truly the norm, but for Zionism almost everyone out there is an actual or potential enemy, differing only in proximity and placement on its very long list of enemies (which is now America’s target list); and
4. Almost all nationalist movements (including the irredentist and secessionist variants) intend to create an independent state from a population in place or to reunite a separated people (like the Sudeten Germans in the 1930s) — it is very rare for it to include the wholesale displacement of another indigenous population, which is far more common of successful colonialist movements as in the US — and perhaps a reason why most Americans wouldn’t care too much about what the Israelis are doing to the Palestinians even if they DID know about it, is because that is no different than what Europeans in North America did to the Indians/Native Americans here in a longer and more low-tech fashion.
9/11
Sabrosky makes a case, not just for a coverup of 9/11 but goes much further. He points out as do so many that the physics of the attack are unworkable. He, however, is one of the few to point to a conclusion many find obvious but few have the nerve to admit, that it would have been impossible to stage 9/11 without the full resources of both the CIA and Mossad and that 9/11 served the interests of both agencies quite well.
There was nothing they could have wished for more.
Sabrosky also makes a point involving media coverage of 9/11:
Finally, we need to take a hard look at why the mainstream media (MSM) have paid more attention to Sarah Palin’s wardrobe than they have to dissecting blatant falsehoods, discrepancies and inconsistencies in the US Government’s treatment of 9/11 and its aftermath.
ZIONISM AND TREASON
The inescapable point isnt the 60,000 Americans killed or wounded in a war started out of treason or the world it threatens to destroy. Americans have been looking away from these glaring realities the way they looked away from Vietnam. Sabrosky leaves Israel and her American Jewish supporters who he sees as traitors with a warning:
Do we take Sabrosky seriously because he is a Marine or a Jew? Do we wonder why the things he says reach so few? Is American in a shooting war where our biggest enemy sits behind us, killing us off, robbing us blind and whispering gently in our ears how much they love us?
It would seem so.DR ALAN SABROSKY, FORMER DIRECTOR OF STUDIES AT THE US ARMY WAR COLLEGE... more-

Coulter plans filing rights violation after U of Ottowa protests
"Inflammatory right-wing pundit Ann Coulter took aim at a University of Ottawa administrator Monday night, saying an e-mail from the school warning her to use “restraint, respect and consideration” when addressing Ontario students during a speaking tour this week made her a victim of a “hate crime.”
"In Houle’s e-mail, a copy of which was obtained by the National Post, the administrator urges Coulter to weigh her words with “respect and civility in mind” when she speaks at the University of Ottawa campus Tuesday.
“Our domestic laws, both provincial and federal, delineate freedom of expression (or ‘free speech’) in a manner that is somewhat different than the approach taken in the United States. I therefore encourage you to educate yourself, if need be, as to what is acceptable in Canada and to do so before your planned visit here.”
Houle goes on: “Promoting hatred against any identifiable group would not only be considered inappropriate, but could in fact lead to criminal charges.”
---
That e-mail sounds pretty reasonable, actually. I wonder how much they're leaving out, though. Do you think she has a legitimate case? I'd say absolutely not.. considering the type of speeches she gives that are full of cutting insults and obviously stabbing remarks. She's also not part of an identifiable crowd, as she's far more "radical" and "outspoken" than many conservatives. Also, isnt' the HRC an American-only institution? Not sure how that would work."Inflammatory right-wing pundit Ann Coulter took aim at a University of Ottawa... more-

Activists Protesting Dont Ask, Dont Tell arrested after protest outside Whitehouse
Covering the rally, protest, arrest and news surrounding via TOWLEROAD/TWITTER/MSM.
On Thursday, March 18th the Human Rights Campaign, the largest LGBT rights lobby in the nation held a press event and rally in support of its work to repeal the 1993 law banning Gays and Lesbians from serving in the military. Featuring comedian Kathy Griffin as a lobbyist working with HRC to repeal the law.
In the run up to the event, Robin McGehe, Fresno, CA resident, an activist leader and organizer of the National Equality March, an LGBT rights rally held at the capitol in October of 2009, asked HRC President Joe Solomnese to allow Lt. Dan Choi to address the crowd. Choi was reportedly rebuffed. Choi is a west point grad, and Iraq war veteran, who is being processed for discharge from the military under the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy after coming out publicly on Rachel Maddow's show last year and has received a lot of attention for his vocal opposition to the Dont Ask Dont Tell policy. Choi took the podium after being rebuffed at the press event and together with Griffin encouraged the crowd to leave their staging ground at Freedom Plaza in Washington DC, to march with him the four blocks to the White House.
HRC Reports that over one thousand people attended the rally.
Once arriving at the white house Choi was joined by already discharged Army Captain Jim Pietrangelo and together they chained themselves to the White House fence. "Until we have full equality" the crowd says Choi said over and over, outside White House as he and Pietrangelo with assistance from McGeehe handcuffed themselves to the black iron fence outside the grounds of the White House.
Shortly after the Secret Service arrived and ordered the crowd to the other side of the street and taped off the area. Approximately seven agents were on scene in side the area secured by the Secret Service and several minutes later they removed the cuffs and ushered Choi and Peitrangelo into a van arresting them. Also arrested was Robin McGehee, although the details as to her arrest are a bit fuzzier to me.
White House press secretary Robert Gibbs was asked about the action in an outdoor press conference later that day. Gibbs was asked if the white house planned on meeting with Get Equal on the Don't Ask Don't Tell issue. Gibbs said, there was no meeting on the books, and that the White House had no advance knowledge of the event.
McGehee was released six hours later after paying a $35 fine. Choi and Peitrangelo remained incarcerated overnight, and arraigned the next day. Both plead 'not guilty' to charges of chaining themselves to government property and are due in court April 26th.
After his release Choi spoke alongside Peitrangelo about the sentiment of being incarcerated. "There was no freer moment than being in that prison. It was freeing for me, and I thought of all of the other people that were still trapped - that were still handcuffed and fettered in their hearts. And we might have been caged up physically, but the message was very clear to all of the people who think that equality can be purchased with a donation, or with a cocktail party, or with tokens, that are serving in a public role. We are worth more than tokens. We have absolute value. And when the person who is oppressed by his own country wants to find out how to get that dignity back - being chained up and being arrested - that's how you get your dignity conferred back upon you. And so I think that by actions, my call is to every leader - not just talking gay leaders - I'm talking any leader who believes in America, and the promises of America can be manifest. We're gonna do it again. And we're going to keep doing it until the promises are manifest. And we will not stop. This is a very clear message to President Obama and any other leader who supposes to talk for the American promise and the American people. We will not go away."
Given the loudly broadening divide between the major players in the LGBT rights movement such as HRC and the activists groups like Get Equal the media is the approach in their action. The people seem more restless after the events in the last election cycles with losses in Maine and California among others, and groups like Get Equal are leveraging this unrest and turning it into political action hoping to pressure legislators and executives into action. While HRC is feeling the backlash by the public and the highjacking of their events. Groups have sprung up on Facebook declaring HRC unrepresentative, because of their tactics, and what many people are beginning to feel are exclusionary politics. Such as the divide over ENDA (the employment non discrimination act) that HRC at one point supported without a clause that would protect transgender people; an issue which enraged the trans community and gay activists.
The question that interests me is how does this arrest will affect Lt. Dan Choi's ability to serve. Could the military discharge him citing other policies due to this arrest? Will it all have been in vain if his goal is to serve openly? I'm sure Dan has thought this over closely and considered these ramifications, yet the question has not been brought up in the media.

When will Obama end Don't Ask Don't Tell?
FROM THE NEWS BLOG:
This weekend was the Human Rights Campaign gathering in DC. There was a gala dinner and a big gay march. President Obama gave a speech at the dinner and promised (again) to end "Don't Ask Don't Tell". It was an important night for Obama, who's commitment to the gay rights movement has been in question lately.
He said:
"Barack Obama is doing well with 90% or more of Democrats so the White House views this opposition as really part of the Internet left fringe....For a sign of how seriously the White House does or doesn't take this opposition, one adviser told me those bloggers need to take off the pajamas, get dressed, and realize that governing a closely divided country is complicated and difficult."
When do you think he should?FROM THE NEWS BLOG: This weekend was the Human Rights Campaign gathering in DC.... more-

ACLU, HRC At Odds Over Senate Version of Hate Crimes Bill
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) are apparently at odds over the Matthew Shepard Act, which was attached to the Defense Reauthorization Bill. The ACLU insists the Senate's version (but not the House's, which it supports) doesn't go far enough in guaranteeing First Amendment protections. An ACLU spokesperson issued a statement objecting to the Senate version of the hate crimes bill because it lacked strong language protecting freedom of speech. This, of course, recalls the various objections that many Conservative groups have to the hate crimes bill.
But the HRC counters: that's not true. Both the Senate and House's bills provide adequate protections, insists HRC. (Interestingly, the Senate also passed an amendment via cloture for the sole purpose of indicating the bill does not violate the First Amendment.)
While the ACLU may be more interested in protecting the rights of individuals, many of the Conservatives speaking out on this issue regard this as being more about preventing the bill from passing. (And speaking of conservatives, the Log Cabin Republicans "applaud" the Senate's passage of the bill.)The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) are... more-
