Just a few hours after Time magazine anointed Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg "Person of the Year," Zuckerberg's company announced yet another new service that will attempt to recognize pictures of your friends based on their facial characteristics.
Starting next week, Facebook will start using face recognition technology to assist its users in tagging pictures of friends.
**** Privacy Remains the Same ****
Facebook officials told me that the new service will not change the privacy settings related to tagging -- users will still get a notice if they are tagged and can remove the tag of any photos. Also, users continue to have control over who tags them.
Another comforting fact about the new tagging service is that it's not automatic. When you upload an album, Facebook will attempt to recognize the people in it. If it finds what it thinks is a match it will ask you to confirm. If you do nothing, the photo won't be tagged.
As has long been the case with photos, you will only be able to tag people you are friends with and, presumably to improve accuracy, Facebook will only compare the pictures against a relatively small sub-set of your friends -- perhaps as few as the 30 people you communicate with most often, which, according to computer scientists who study face recognition, can improve the accuracy.
Facebook will also be allowing users to opt-out of having their name suggested to friends during the photo tagging process. If you disable "Suggest photos of me to friends," your name will "no longer be suggested in photo tags, though friends can still tag you manually," according to the Facebook blog.
From a privacy standpoint this move should have little impact but it is yet one more example of how Facebook is encouraging people to share information, including photos.

Former British PM, Tony Blair is today to receive the USA's highest civil award, the Medal of Freedom, for his efforts in helping the United States "combat terrorism".
The award is presented to those that have made "an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, or world peace, or cultural or other significant public or private endeavours".
I can't help but overlook Blair's input in helping the US fight terrorism, and see this as more of a "thanks for being one of the only ones who stood by me" medal. Maybe the speech will sound something like this: "Congrats Mr. Blair, you did a great job as Bush's lapdog. You get a medal."

A California congressional delegation asked President Bush on Friday to posthumously award the Medal of Honor to a Marine who was chosen to receive only the second-highest medal the Navy can bestow for valor.
The delegation, spearheaded by Rep. Duncan Hunter, sent a letter asking for a review of the case of Sgt. Rafael Peralta, who witnesses say covered a grenade with his body to save comrades on November 15, 2004, during fighting in Fallujah, Iraq. Already wounded by gunfire, he died immediately.
A copy of the letter given to The Associated Press was signed by a bipartisan group of five other representatives and Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer. It urges Bush to award the nation's highest honor, the same medal he gave to Marine Cpl. Jason L. Dunham, who was killed in 2004 after covering a grenade with his helmet.
"Intentionally absorbing a grenade blast to protect one's comrades in arms has been traditionally recognized by awarding the Medal of Honor. The sacrifice of Sergeant Peralta manifests the same devotion to one's comrade's and country as that displayed by Jason Dunham," the letter said.
The bipartisan delegation formed after Peralta's mother said publicly this week that she was told her son would be awarded the Navy Cross, rather than the Medal of Honor, because the nomination was tainted by reports he was accidentally shot by a fellow Marine shortly before an insurgent lobbed the grenade.
The question of whether to award Peralta the Medal of Honor centers on whether the mortally wounded Marine, who had been shot in the head and upper body during a house-to-house search, could have intentionally reached for the grenade and covered it with his body.
After all the evidence was scrutinized, officials determined the nomination did not meet the standard necessary to support the Medal of Honor, said Capt. Beci Brenton, spokeswoman for Navy Secretary Donald Winter.
Defense Department officials have said that because there was some contradictory evidence, Gates took the extra step of asking for a review by a panel consisting of a former commander of U.S. forces in Iraq, a Medal of Honor recipient, a civilian neurosurgeon who is retired from the military and two forensic pathologists who also are military retirees.
The panel recommended against the Medal of Honor, and Gates made the decision this month, officials said.

Winnipeg, Canada -- It was 2004 when Detroit-based Kibben Miller came across an Internet-based volunteer opportunity that he saw as a perfect fit for both his lifestyle and skill set as a video editor. Although Miller was initially somewhat skeptical of whether or not the Internet could be used as an effective collaboration tool for video production, he soon proved otherwise. In his first production, he successfully co-ordinated and worked with three other online volunteers he had never met. And these four strangers, who were dispersed throughout North America, collaborated to produce a compelling Video for Canadian charitable organization Macdonald Youth Services (MYS), which aired on local television.
And after three years of successfully navigating cyberspace as an MYS Internet-based volunteer, Miller has some inspiring words for anyone considering online volunteering:
" ... regardless of what they think they can offer or they can't offer, there is going to be an organization that will welcome your work," commented Miller. "You don't have to have extraordinary computer skills and an elaborate setup to make a real significant contribution to the organization ...," added Miller.
"Whether from the Eastern US in Detroit or on the other end of the country in Portland connected via a coffee shop's wireless Internet connection, Kibben has been there for us," stated MYS Online Volunteer Program Developer Randy Tyler. "Methodical, experienced and creative, he has been an invaluable resource both as a video editor/producer and consultant," added Tyler.
To learn more about Kibben's motivations for online volunteering, the rewards and what has helped keep him involved for three years, MYS South Dakota-based online volunteer audio producer John Small interviewed Kibben. Winnipeg, Canada -- After nearly seven years of online volunteering for a charitable organization 1200 miles away, Toronto area resident, Tu Loan St-Cyr, is taking a leave of absence from a charitable organization she has never seen. St-Cyr, who began Internet-based volunteering with Winnipeg-based charitable organization Macdonald Youth Services (MYS) in 2001, clearly demonstrates that an online volunteer can be retained for years if appropriately screened, assigned and recognized, even though the non-profit has never met their volunteer face-to-face.
"Never one to shy away from a challenge, Tu Loan is a dedicated, creative and reliable virtual volunteer, stated MYS Online Volunteer Program Developer," Randy Tyler. "For any non-profit organization, retaining Internet-based volunteers, like St-Cyr, is much more efficient and effective than frequently attempting to recruit new volunteers," added Tyler.
"I would like to share with you some great news and in turn inform you that I will be taking a leave of absence from MYS for a year commencing December of this year [2007]", stated St-Cyr in an e-mail to Tyler. "I will be taking a year off my regular job and would like to also take a leave of absence from MYS to concentrate on our newborn," continued St-Cyr.
To learn more about how this dedicated online volunteer was recruited, listen to MYS South Dakota-based online volunteer audio producer John Small's podcast interview with St-Cyr. The five minute interview can be downloaded or listened to online from MYS's "About Online Volunteering" Web-based Resource and Podcast site:
