The second edition of Art Expo India witnessed participation of several art galleries as well art experts not only from India, but also internationally. In an insightful talk on the last day of the event, she discussed Indian art from a global perspective. There is also interest in the art scene in India from foreign buyers. Auctions of Indian art abroad have had paintings go for as much as $1.6m (Dh5.88m) last year. That was for a Husain work, but the other artists are also doing well, selling for tens of thousands of dollars.Nehru Centre in Mumbai might not be frequented by art connoisseurs but last weekend over 20,000 enthusiasts were visited the venue to view artwork from 30 galleries around the world at Art Expo India. “It’s a forum that allows viewers to look at a collection that is representative,” says Vickram Sethi, chairman of the three-day fair. In previous articles last May and July I discussed Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition's (BWAC) Spring and Summer exhibits noting the mixed but generally quite good quality of the art, its affordability, the diversity of styles and backgrounds of the artists, and that Jewish artists are somewhat overrepresented. All of which is also true of BWAC's Fall 2009 Show: The Words of Color that opens on Saturday and which I previewed on Sunday. In the 1980s many artists incorporated texts into their visual art in ways that were sometimes self-indulgent, often polemical, and sometimes both. In this exhibit some artists integrate texts into the work and others place the text on the side as a kind of commentary reminiscent of our sacred texts. In previous articles last May and July I discussed Brooklyn Waterfront Artists... more
If you don't know Kaki King, you're really missing something. Not only is she a hip Brooklyn export, she can play a guitar like no one since Andre Segovia. She beats and thumps and slaps and strums and picks at strings and frets and wood until her audience is agasp at what they're seeing and hearing. Kaki PLAYS guitar! Check out "Bone Chaos In The Castle" and "Pull Me Out Alive." You'll feel absolute heat and passion blazing from the musician and her instrument. And, now, not only is Kaki King earning fame and critical recognition for her music, she's also pushing her boundaries as an artist and philanthropist with her latest project, "THE EXHIBIT." King doled out twelve guitars to twelve artists with visions of her song lyrics and allowed them to turn each into his own work of art expressing a different Kaki King song title. King will be performing (with pink, painted fingers) at and hosting an exhibit and auction of the art guitars to benefit VH1's SAVE THE MUSIC program this weekend in Brooklyn and all for free. Great role model! If you don't know Kaki King, you're really missing something. Not only is she a hip... more
The exhibition is devoted to the activities of the experimental guitar band Sonic Youth, which profoundly influenced style in the music and art scene from its founding in 1981. This is shown by the numerous joint projects of the band with artists, filmmakers, designers, and musicians, as well as by works of art that Sonic Youth has selected for the exhibition. The interdisciplinary show tells an alternative story of contemporary culture, of teenager rebellion, the restlessness of youth, of the craving for fame and the search for identity, gender roles, sexuality, and religion. This comprehensive project is being staged jointly by the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf and KIT - Kunst im Tunnel. The exhibition will be shown first at LiFE in Saint-Nazaire (17 June - 7 September 2008), at the new Museion in Bozen (10 October 2008 - 4 January 2009), and after Düsseldorf at the Malmö Konsthall. Accompanied to the exhibition the band will give a concert in Düsseldorf.

"As anyone who's been in a band knows, there's always something different about the drummer.
That could be different in a good way or a bad way; it doesn't matter. Drummers live on their own planet. Anyone needing further understanding should only look to hockey. In hockey, it's the goalie that differs. Having to wearing a painted mask is just the beginning of it.
Understanding the drummer's outsider role provided Sandra Dionisi with the starting point needed to organize "Cut to the Drummer," a compelling art exhibition at Steam Whistle Brewing, beginning with tonight's silent auction, with depictions of 50 drummers by 50 exceptional, internationally known illustrators. The artwork is expected to fetch prices from around $300 to $2,500.
"As I discovered in my research, drummers have their own mythology," says Dionisi, the respected Toronto illustrator behind The Bepo + Mimi Project, an initiative aiming to make design and illustration more socially responsible.""As anyone who's been in a band knows, there's always something different about the... more

The exhibition features work from artists and designers including Brandon Ballangéem, Lucy Orta (top image), Fulgaro, Ideo and Doshi Levien (above).

As I entered the futuristic-looking Tokyo Big Site building on Odaiba Island, I was greeted by a person with the head of fish. Beyond him/her/it and all about the place wandered a colorful assortment of strange characters which appeared to have been born in fertile imaginations bred on Japanese Anime, Gothic Horror, and Salvador Dali. It was then that I knew I had reached my destination: the Tokyo Design Festa.
Design Festa is a chaotic showcase of artists, musicians, craftsmen, designers, dancers, and performers - the sublime mixed with the avant garde. The Design Festa takes place twice a year in Tokyo and has been going on for 14 years.
Artists come from all over the world to participate. Booths are set up to showcase their creations and crafts. Visitors can look at, handle, and purchase their favorite pieces. In addition they have the chance to talk with the artist to learn more about them and their artwork.
For artists, the Design Festa gives them the opportunity to get their work noticed and possibly sold. The event is a breeding ground for future art as a lot of networking goes on between artists which can lead to potential collabrations.
There is so much to see, do, and absorb in a weekend at Design Festa. The place is literally a beehive of activity. There are performances to see, workshops to attend, bands to hear, painters to watch, and oddity to puzzle over.
Some of the booths offer short workshops to teach visitors a bit their craft. I tried my hand at the ancient art of Japanese calligraphy. Calligraphy in old Japan was considered an all important skill. In the far off days of the Heian Period (794-1192), a person’s calligraphy was believed to be a mirror of their character. I would have been laughed out of the Heian Court with my paltry attempt at the turtle kanji character. My turtle looked a bit more like a sickly chicken strung up by clumsy anti-poultry vigilantes. My teacher, a ten year old girl, was patient with me and guided me as best as she could.
At a makeup special effects booth, visitors were able to get horrific body scars which didn’t hurt a bit. I got myself a nice deep scar running down my arm which later fooled a few drunks at my local bar.
There were several fantasical creations from this booth wandering around surprising the unwary and small children. One was tall elegant alien creature frighteningly realistic but fortunately sweetenly demure.
Another creation was a ghastly sculpture of a half-tree half-woman monster with the severed head of a man in her/its hand. Her/Its roots were nourished with the blood and gore of other men. It was a macarbe cocktail of environmentalism and feminism blended horrifically together.
Along with the countless booths, there are a variety of showings throughout the day in different sections of the event area. Bands, short films, musicians, eclectic performers can be seen outside, upstairs, and in the main hall. I was able to see rock bands, taiko drum groups, naughty nurses, a gyrating eyeball man, and a dancing ninja troupe.
One of the popular returning performance groups is Mr. Eyeball Love Globe from Taiwan. The group is headed by man with an enormous eyeball as his head. His outfit is covered with a similar pattern. His story from his flyer is that he is an alien here to spread love. The Eyeball group was one of the most out-there groups and attracted a lot of attention. They have been to Design Festa several times before.
Design Festa takes place twice a year in May and November. For more information please check:

Fairbanks-based musician John Luther Adams is profiled in Alex Ross' recent contribution to the New Yorker ("Song of the Earth: A composer takes inspiration from the Arctic", 12 May 2008). John Luther Adams -- not to be confused with John Adams who scored the modern opera "Nixon in China" -- has produced an installation for the Museum of the North at the University of Fairbanks in Alaska that culls geologic, seismic, and meteorologic data into a computer and processing the feed as light and sound. Adams' work “The Place Where You Go to Listen” is not merely an ambient work, but a piece that processes information organically and in real-time. And the title refers to Naalagiagvik, a coastal sliver on the Arctic Ocean, cited in an Inupiaq legend. Check out Ross' profile of John Luther Adams, his music, and projects.

The Martian Museum of Terrestrial Art exhibition at London's Barbican Gallery 'presents contemporary art works under the fictional guise of a museum collection conceived by and designed for extraterrestrials. The Museum’s curators deploy an eccentric classification system, treating artworks as artifacts. The Martian perspective opens up contemporary art to fresh interpretations as well as humorous misunderstandings. In presuming to understand an unfamiliar culture, the Martian Museum of Terrestrial Art parodies the way that Western anthropologists historically viewed non-Western cultures through alien eyes.
Playful and irreverent, the collection features works by over 100 artists, including Joseph Beuys, Cai Guo-Qiang, Maurizio Cattelan, Jimmie Durham, Thomas Hirschhorn, Ryan Gander, Mona Hatoum, Susan Hiller, Damien Hirst, Brian Jungen, Dr. Lakra, Louise Lawler, Sherrie Levine, John McCracken, Bruce Nauman, Mike Nelson, Cornelia Parker, Sigmar Pdka, Ugo Rondinone, Daniel Spoerri, Haim Steinbach, Francis Upritchard, Jeffrey Vallance, Andy Warhol and Rebecca Warren'.
