If you want to see some disturbing pictures of a great American city in decline, head over to Detroiturbex . com. The site was created "to raise awareness of the social and economic challenges the city of Detroit faces through photography."
One of their galleries is already going crazy on Reddit.
It shows haunting pictures of Detroit's Cass Technical High School in its glory days superimposed on top of the school after it was abandoned....

Camilo José Vergara has spent more than thirty years documenting poor, urban and minority neighborhoods across the United States. His projects emerge from a large archive of images he has made since 1977 of the nation’s largest ghettos. His exhaustive research has taken him to Camden and Newark, New Jersey; Chicago, Illinois; Detroit, Michigan; Gary, Indiana; Maine; New York; and Los Angeles. Vergara takes his camera to places plagued by the drug trade, and to neighborhoods filled with homeless shelters, prisons, and drug treatment facilities. He is a prolific photographer who continues to live in New York City. Vergara has been the recipient of a MacArthur Foundation Genius Grant.
Vergara describes his approach as interdisciplinary, using techniques from fields that include sociology, architecture, photography, urban planning, history and anthropology. He has focused upon the gradual erosion of urban neighborhoods by photographing the same structures repeatedly over decades in order to capture the process of of urban decay. The photography presented here is from Vergara’s project entitled “Invincible Cities.” He returned to the same intersection in Harlem and photographed the changes in one building for 38 years. The images create a composite, time-lapse portrait of one of New York City’s most vibrant and distinctive areas.
This piece includes a number of color photographs, a photo-gallery and a documentary short film.

These images depict an abandoned train station and neighborhood in Saginaw, MI. I managed to get a handful of good images before I was chased off by the police. I have a certain fondness or abandoned buildings because when I look at them I see history, a neighborhood that was once beautiful and thriving.Urban Decay

This exhibition documents Brian Roach’s exploration of the transience of human accomplishment and the inherent beauty in its inevitable destruction. His work exhibits transgression in the sense that it challenges what is traditionally seen as beautiful. Instead of the pristine state that the structures once were, Roach shows them in their current gritty and texture-laden state, created by time, the elements, and chance. Through layering and reconstructing the image through varying perspectives and exposures, Roach’s work creates a fractured sense within the scene, presenting beauty and decay on a grand scale, and alluding to the fragility of the setting.

The mad scientists at de la Mancha have premiered a new Windows VST plug-in dubbed Urban Decay. This budget plug-in is touted as a multi-band distortion effect, with “13 different flavors of dirt across 3 perfectly split frequency bands.”
Urban Decay contains seven different distortion types, each designed to dirty up your audio. The effects can be used as single entities or combined to create massive mayhem. Three of the distortion effects contain 3 algorithms each, allowing for more “tweaking to get the filth quota just right.”
If you desire different amounts of distortion across the bass, mids and highs frequencies, Urban Decay allows you to adjust the wet/dry mix level and volume across these frequency bands to dial in the exact the sound you’re looking for. You can accurately adjust the split points of the 3 bands and there is zero-phasing and zero-crossover, due to using the inversion method.
Features:
» 3 band distortion effect with 13 flavors of dirt
» 7 distortion effects, with 13 combinations
» 3 bands can be split by frequency or layered at full spectrum
» Splits can be adjusted to 1Hz accuracy
» Split method uses inversion, so there is no crossover or phasing
» Each band can be adjusted for wet/dry mix level and volume
» Each band can be muted for sound design or dual/single band operation
» Each effect can be muted for sound design or to save CPU
» Master wet/dry mix level and volume
» Optional soft or hard limiting
» 40 presets
de la Mancha’s Urban Decay costs just $15 bucks and is available now as a VST plug-in for Windows. More information on de la Mancha Urban Decay. The mad scientists at de la Mancha have premiered a new Windows VST plug-in dubbed... more

"DETROIT (AP) — Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was charged with perjury and other offenses Monday — and got a stern lecture about the importance of telling the truth — after a trove of raunchy text messages contradicted his sworn denials of an affair with his chief aide.
The 37-year-old "Hip-Hop Mayor" who brought youth and vitality to the job in this struggling city of 900,000 could get up to 15 years in prison for perjury alone and would be automatically expelled from office if convicted.
...
"The messages called into question testimony Kilpatrick and Beatty gave in a lawsuit filed by two police officers who alleged they were fired for investigating claims that the mayor used his security unit to cover up extramarital affairs.
In court, Kilpatrick and Beatty strongly denied having an intimate relationship, but the text messages reveal that they carried on a flirty, sometimes sexually explicit dialogue about where to meet and how to conceal their trysts. ...
The city eventually agreed to pay $8.4 million to the two officers and a third former officer. Some of the charges brought against the mayor on Monday accuse him of agreeing to the settlement in an effort to keep the text messages from becoming public."

A poem I wrote a few years back about life in the inner city of a state capitol. In sight of the capital building but worse for the wear as a result. I was verry bitter at the time and not at all enthused by politics and no longer interested in journalism. My cities murder rate grew to above washington DC's to the point where one shooting per day was the norm. Crack houses, decrepit used car lots, and empty lots defined the neighborhood where I grew up and where three generations of my family had lived. I wrote it before I came to Current, I was struggling to find any outlet for expression any way to vent my frustration at what I was witnessing. I heard two shootings from my home. Two murders. The poem that followed was so opinionated that it was published in a literary journal not in the poetry section but in oppinion. I sent it to the Mayor's office and recieved a kind reply. The following year conditions improved, I actualy came to work for the city, in arts services. Doing outreach and working at the first public arts facility in my city giving children in my neighborhoos access to art and education instead of violence and I found Current a place where I never had to feel frustrated about my oppinion or anyone elses, a televison station that actualy cared. It's an idea so novel that even now as an employee I haven't gotten over how refreshing it was to find such a place. I am posting this in response to a new user who I urged to post her views in a webcam format. I said that poetry was applicable and that a webcam might be a good way of expressing her views in a way another site couldn't allow. So here goes, "Crying All the Same by Gabriel Canada."A poem I wrote a few years back about life in the inner city of a state capitol. In... more

Last week, Fidel Castro gave up the almost total power he's had in Cuba for nearly 50 years. Given his prolonged illness, Castro's announcement wasn't a big surprise, but it's received a great amount of attention from the media and politicians. However, this article also looks at the extreme urban decay and ruin in Cuba as one of the outcomes of The Cuban Revolution.
Photographs, three videos and a photo-gallery are included.Last week, Fidel Castro gave up the almost total power he's had in Cuba for... more
