Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas hinted on Monday that there is a possibility to resume the peace negotiations with Israel, if the U.S. administration exerts pressure on Israel to halt settlement activities.
Abbas made the remarks in a first interview aired on al-Felastineya, a new Fatah movement satellite channel based in Amman. The channel was recently inaugurated and is directed by Palestinian ambassador to Cairo Nabil Amer.
"There is a possibility to resume the stalled peace negotiations (with Israel) if the American administration presses on Israel to halt settlement activities and accept the two-state vision solution," Abbas told the new Fatah satellite channel.
Abbas reiterated that he was ready to discuss "with open mind all the negotiable issues according to the international resolutions (related to resolving the Palestinian cause)."Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas hinted on Monday that there is a possibility to... more

A long-awaited rebellion against Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu by Likud MKs began to emerge on Monday when a group of hawks inside his faction sent him a letter urging him to build in Judea and Samaria and not to agree to the formation of a Palestinian state.
MK Tzipi Hotovely initiated the letter a day after Netanyahu told the cabinet that his government had brought about a consensus on the need for two states for two peoples. Channel 2 reported that half of the Likud faction had signed the letter. The signatories include deputy minister Ayoub Kara and Danny Danon, Miri Regev, Tzion Pinyan, Carmel Shama and Yariv Levin.
"We Likud MKs are turning to you due to reports that you would agree to freeze settlement growth temporarily in parts of Judea and Samaria, despite our promise to the voters to continue building in the settlements," the MKs wrote in the letter. "The Likud has always been in favor of natural development in Judea and Samaria, including during the election campaign."A long-awaited rebellion against Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu by Likud MKs began... more

Atlanta - Federal judges on both coasts this month awarded major settlements to Hispanic guest workers in rulings that could alter the US immigration debate and potentially offer new jobs to Americans.
Last week in San Francisco, a federal judge ordered back pay to braceros, the original guest workers from Mexico who laid track for American rail companies in the World War II era.
A few days earlier in Atlanta, another federal judge ruled that 3,000 pineros, the "men of the pines" who plant the massive pine plantations of the deep South, have been grossly underpaid and subjected to capricious industry rules made possible by the workers' social and physical isolation. The court also ordered compensation.
The rulings offer troubling insights into how US industries, especially in the South, exploit foreign guest workers under the loosely regulated H-2B visa program. Atlanta - Federal judges on both coasts this month awarded major settlements to... more

"Life on either side of the great divide.
It has been called a 'wall', a 'security fence' and an 'obstacle' to terrorists. When it is finished it will run 450 miles and will have cost Israel around $4bn. For some it means security, for others it is a means of undoing their future. Four years ago this week the international court of justice said Israel's West Bank barrier was illegal where it crossed into Palestinian territory. Today, Rory McCarthy explores the lives of the people on either side of the barrier and throughout this week guardian.co.uk will examine its implications for a settlement in the Middle East's most intractable conflict."

The US justice department has agreed a multimillion-dollar settlement with a man it said was a "person of interest" in the US anthrax attacks in 2001.
Dr Steven Hatfill, a former US army scientist, sued the department, saying it violated his privacy rights by speaking to reporters about the case.
Court papers now say a deal has been reached and the case will be dismissed.
Five people were killed by anthrax mailed to lawmakers and media outlets in New York, Washington and Florida.
According to the settlement documents filed on Friday, the justice department will pay Dr Hatfill $2.8m upfront. It will also buy Dr Hatfill a $3m annuity that will pay him $150,000 each year for 20 years. The US justice department has agreed a multimillion-dollar settlement with a man it... more

The Israeli government has announced plans to build nearly 900 new housing units in a part of East Jerusalem that is considered occupied territory.
The Israeli government insists that any final peace deal will see these districts redrawn inside the Israeli border.
The contentious move comes amid the ongoing political battle swirling around Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who is accused of corruption. In addition to Mr Barak's call for him to step aside, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni said that the Kadima Party, to which both she and Mr Olmert belong, should hold new leadership elections.
In March, Israel announced plans to build 600 homes in East Jerusalem as part of the Jerusalem mayor's initiative to construct 40,000 homes in the city to ease the housing plight of young couples.
At the time, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice -- who was in the region to shore up support for the peace initiative -- said Israel should stop all settlement activity.
Largely at the request of the United States, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert froze construction in both Har Homa and Pisgat Zeev, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported.
The newspaper said Israel issued a tender last year for the construction of 300 housing units in Har Homa, sparking harsh international criticism.

The Israeli Government has released plans detailing the construction of 900 more housing units in a part of East Jerusalem, an area considered to be occupied territory. Hardly the most positive of decisions following allegations that the Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is corrupt.
In a strange and telling political twist, the Prime Minister will be meeting the Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas to discuss the peace process. No doubt Mr Abbas will have read the news of Israeli plans to expand further into the occupied territories ahead of their scheduled peace talks on Monday. Israel has already insisted that if a final peace deal is met, then the latest planned settlements will be inside of another re-drawn border between Israel and Palestine.
Is the peace process really working or do you think it is a distraction from the reality of what is happening?

Families of those killed in the Virginia Tech massacre would receive $100,000 each under a settlement the state is proposing to prevent lawsuits, according to a victim's relative who received a copy of the proposal.
Medical and counseling expenses would be provided to the families of the 32 killed and dozens of surviving victims, said the person, who asked Monday to remain anonymous because those involved were told not to discuss the settlement.
Families would also have the opportunity to question the governor and university officials about the shootings, according to the family member.Families of those killed in the Virginia Tech massacre would receive $100,000 each... more
