The Obama family is showing America a new way to look at a black family, some commentators say. Rather than being billed as the 'problem' family or the 'comic' family, the Obamas are presenting an educated and loving unit to the country. "The last time we had an image of a black family that was this positive it was "The Cosby Show," but this is the Real McCoy," says Jacqueline Moore Bowles, national president of Jack and Jill of America Inc., a predominately black organization for youths. The new President and his wife are also showing the US a healthy example of a black couple. "We don't get to see black love," says Heidi Durrow, the prize-winning author of the forthcoming novel, "Low Sky Dreaming."The Obama family is showing America a new way to look at a black family, some... more

This article goes back a few weeks but found this interesting
Researchers have discovered that Oxytocin, a hormone well known for its role in helping mothers to bond with their babies during breastfeeding, is also involved in helping people recognise familiar faces.
The findings are the first time to shown the hormone in important in helping to remember social interaction.
"Recognising a familiar face is a crucial feature of successful social interaction in humans," said Dr Peter Klaver at the University of Zurich, the senior author of the new study, which was led by Ulrike Rimmele, PhD, at New York University. "In this study, we investigated for the first time the systematic effect of oxytocin on social memory in humans."
Dr Klaver and his colleagues had the study participants use a nasal spray containing either oxytocin or a placebo and then showed them images of faces and inanimate objects, including houses, sculptures, and landscapes.
Participants were given a surprise test when they returned the next day - they were shown some of the images they had seen the day before as well as some new ones and were asked to distinguish between images that were "new," images that they specifically "remembered" being show the previous day.
The volunteers who used the oxytocin spray more accurately recognised the faces they had seen before than did those in the placebo group. This article goes back a few weeks but found this interesting

Obama spokesman says president-elect will end 'don't ask, don't tell'
President-elect Barack Obama will end the 15-year-old "don't ask, don't tell" policy that has prevented homosexual and bisexual men and women from serving openly within the U.S. military, an Obama spokesman said
.
Obama said during the campaign that he opposed the policy, but since his election in November he has made statements that have been interpreted as backpedaling. On Friday, however, Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs, responding on the transition team's Web site to a Michigan resident who asked if the new administration planned to get rid of the policy, said:
"You don't hear politicians give a one-word answer much. But it's 'Yes.' "

IRVINE, Calif. — Late at night, the neighbors saw a little girl at the kitchen sink of the house next door.
They watched through their window as the child rinsed plates under the open faucet. She wasn't much taller than the counter and the soapy water swallowed her slender arms. To put the dishes away, she climbed on a chair.
But she was not the daughter of the couple next door doing chores. She was their maid.
Shyima was 10 when a wealthy Egyptian couple brought her from a poor village in northern Egypt to work in their California home. She awoke before dawn and often worked past midnight to iron their clothes, mop the marble floors and dust the family's crystal. She earned $45 a month working up to 20 hours a day. She had no breaks during the day and no days off.IRVINE, Calif. — Late at night, the neighbors saw a little girl at the kitchen... more

SAN BERNARDINO - It started as a single-student arrangement for tutoring between a parent and a Cal State San Bernardino professor.
More than five years later, the effort has blossomed into the new, state-of-the-art Watson and Associates Literacy Center on the college campus.
The literacy center is inside the university's new $51 million College of Education building.
It includes three classrooms, 10 individual tutoring rooms, a resource library and a kitchen.
It's a far cry from the early days in Mary Jo Skillings' small campus office. Skillings is chairwoman of the Language, Literacy and Culture Department. In 2003, she kept getting phone calls from a mother looking for someone to help her 8-year-old son with his reading struggles.
Skillings agreed to do the tutoring herself and then decided to write a proposal for a literacy center to serve more K-12 students, she said.SAN BERNARDINO - It started as a single-student arrangement for tutoring between a... more

By refusing to hear a case, the US supreme court handed down a huge victory to gay and lesbian parents throughout the country. A lesbian couple had seperated after having a Vermont civil union. They both parented a child. One woman was seeking visitation rights. The other woman was trying to use Virginia's very strict laws against granting same sex couples any rights whatsoever. The Virginia's supreme court was sympathetic to the woman seeking visitation rights. "The high court Monday declined to hear the case of Lisa Miller, who claimed that the Virginia Supreme Court improperly ignored a state law and constitutional amendment that prohibit same-sex unions and the recognition of such arrangements from other states." By ignoring the case, they endorsed visitation rights for gay and lesbian couples in co-parenting situations despite state law.By refusing to hear a case, the US supreme court handed down a huge victory to gay and... more

An Enduring Crisis for the Black Family
In 1950, at the height of the Jim Crow era and despite the shattering legacy of slavery, the great majority of black children -- an estimated 85 percent -- were born to their two married parents.
Just 15 years later, 24 percent of black mothers were then bypassing marriage
By 1980, black fatherlessness had doubled; 56 percent of black births were to single mothers. In inner-city neighborhoods, the number was closer to 66 percent.
By the 1990s, the majority of black women who did bear children were unmarried.
Today, 70 percent of black children are born to single mothers. In some neighborhoods, two-parent families have vanished.
And what has this meant for racial progress?
Fifty years after Jim Crow, black U.S. households have the lowest median income of any racial or ethnic group.
Close to a third of black children are poor, and their chances of moving out of poverty are considerably lower than those of their white peers.
The fractured black family is not the sole explanation for these gaps, but it is central.
The institution of marriage appears to promote ideals of stability, order and fidelity that benefit children and adults alike.
Those who pin their hopes for black progress on education tend to forget this.
Numerous studies, when controlled for income and race, show that, on average, children growing up with single mothers are less likely to graduate from high school and go to college. employment are not a certain cure.An Enduring Crisis for the Black Family

Prop 8 Backlash Is 'An Outrage That Must Stop,' Group Says in Support of Church
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints expressed appreciation today for a full-page advertisement in The New York Times that decries the "violence and intimidation" directed toward the Church because of its support of Proposition 8.
Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said: "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints expresses its gratitude to the signatories of the full-page advertisement that appeared today in The New York Times.
This was a thoughtful and generous gesture at a time when the right of free expression of people of faith has come under attack. We join with those of all religious faiths and political persuasions who have called for reasoned and civil discourse on matters that affect our nation."
The ad was sponsored by The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty and was signed by scholars, dignitaries and religious leaders from a variety of faiths.
"Religious groups can't claim some sort of special immunity from criticism," the advertisement stated. "Nevertheless, there's a world of difference between legitimate political give-and-take and violent attempts to cow your opponents into submission. Violence and intimidation are always wrong, whether the victims are believers, gay people, or anyone else."
The statement in the ad continued: "Participating in ballot initiatives is legally different from politicking for candidates. It is perfectly lawful for charities, including religious ones. It is perfectly appropriate as well that all voices be heard."
The statement by the group also called for others to add their names to the letter and concluded with a declaration of unified support:
"Therefore, despite our fundamental disagreements with one another, we announce today that we will stand shoulder to shoulder to defend any house of worship -- Jewish, Christian, Hindu, whatever -- from violence, regardless of the cause that violence seeks to serve."Prop 8 Backlash Is 'An Outrage That Must Stop,' Group Says in Support of... more
