The Times’ D.C. bureau editor’s claim to have not heard of the hearings is remarkable, given that the AP newswire carried a story on the hearings, and IVAW has confirmed to FAIR that the D.C. bureau had been sent three separate rounds of different IVAW press releases. In addition, at least 150 Times staffers were sent press releases about Winter Soldier by the Institute for Public Accuracy, a group that encourages inclusion of overlooked facts and progressive perspectives in media coverage. Given that media organizations operating on a small fraction of the Times' budget were aware of and able to find the resources to cover these hearings, the Times’ D.C. bureau’s plea to ignorance about the hearings is all the more disappointing. The Times’ D.C. bureau editor’s claim to have not heard of the hearings is... more

Incredible testimony.
This is Jon Michael Turner's story of serving as a Marine in Iraq. Turner testified at the Winter Soldier: Iraq & Afghanistan conference, sponsored by Iraq Veterans Against the War held in Silver Spring, MD.

When I was in Asia last year I met a Vietnam vet who had come back to Khe San military base to close that chapter in his life and he said something that really stuck with me. He told me that war "causes you to see within your own soul, your own heart, the void and the darkness that you're capable of. And you can't ever see that until your in a place like this".Incredible testimony.

Democracy Now is the only news organization in the world to cover the Winter Soldier testimony last weekend. Winter Soldiers, are brave men and women who break their ranks to tell the truth about war, about their actions and the actions of the men and women that work with them. This is probably the only accurate account of the Iraq war available in the United States right now. It is available in several different formats and all are free.Democracy Now is the only news organization in the world to cover the Winter Soldier... more

Whether you agree with these soldiers or not, their first-hand stories of tours of duty in Iraq bring home the chilling reality of the war and what it means to follow orders as a soldier. Audio and video of the testamony is available from yesterday and today's shows. It is bone chilling fact and without prejudice...Five years ago tonight, on March 19, 2003, the US launched the invasion of Iraq. Half a decade later, as the occupation continues with no end in sight, some of the most powerful voices against the war have been the men and women who have fought in it. For four days this past weekend, soldiers convened at the National Labor College in Silver Spring, Maryland for Winter Soldier, an eyewitness account of the war and occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan. We broadcast their voices. JImmyP's comment: Amy Goodman, considered to be a left-wing agitator by a few is considered by many to be one of the last true journalists in the US. My opion is the later...Bill O'Reilly can't handle her truth. If you like Current, you should be checking in at DemocracyNow.org on a daily basis to get more FACTS in an hour than the main stream delivers in a week. The show is an eye opener. This past weekend veterans from the Iraq war gathered to give their personal accounts. The main stream (corporate) media has all but ignored this historical event. For this they are hypocrites. When the war began if you spoke out against it you were not patriotic and not supporting the troops. Now that those very same troops are speaking out most of the media has chosen to ignore their voices. Democracy Now aired the entire event and you can catch clips daily this week. Iraq Veteran’s Against the war (IVAW)
Today at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., 6 veterans spoke to a room packed with cameras and reporters from every outlet, politically left to right. The announcement was to kick-off the next 3 days of testimonials from over 200 veterans and GI’s from around the country who will be recounting a particularly personal misery that they witnessed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
What Winter Soldier could mean to the current political situation in this Country is a complete unknown. All the testimonials will be broadcast live, and also streaming on the internet (see schedule at www.IVAW.org/wintersoldier). The members of IVAW are prepared for having their stories attacked, belittled and turned against them, as happened in 1971. However, these next few days could represent a turning point that we have all been waiting for.
It is up to those of us in the anti-war movement, and there are millions of us who are against this occupation of Iraq, and escalating rhetoric of war with Iran, to promote the events of the next few days in a way that we have never done before. Word must get out to the impenetrable wall of the corporate media, to those on the street who don’t even know what IVAW is, and to the young men and women in this country who are on the verge of walking up to that recruiter and signing on the dotted line.

Many thanks to current.com! We no longer have to count on mainstream media to report things important to Americans, current.com gives us a voice, enabling us to spread the word about important facts mainstream media chooses to ignore.
