California last week became the first state to integrate green building practices, largely based on the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Efficiency and Environmental Design (LEED) standards, into its statewide building codes.
It was a big, Governator-style move, but while the USGBC officially supports CalGreen, and most in the green building world see it as a net-positive step, not everyone is thrilled about it. In fact many architects, engineers and city planners that fully support the integration of green building practices in the building code are concerned about the challenges involved in implementing and enforcing that code — and those are the building professionals who are advocates of green building in the first place.
“I think we’re living through an example of the law of unintended consequences here,” says Bill Worthen, a member of the American Institute of Architects. ...

Opened in June 2009, McKesson's newest pharmaceutical distribution center (DC) is the company's first to receive LEED new construction certification. Among its environmentally friendly features are its use of recycled building materials, low-flow water fixtures, natural landscaping, motion-controlled lighting and parking for fuel-efficient vehicles.
The new DC is larger than average, with 280,000 sq. ft. of space on the main floor and an additional 60,000 sq. ft of floor space on a second-story mezzanine. It serves more than 1,500 customers.
The DC showcases technology designed to improve the efficiency of warehouse operations. It includes two A-frame units, which enable automated picking of fast-moving products.
It is also the first McKesson DC to use a “Pick-to-Light” system, which guides order fillers down the line by lighting the appropriate product shelves.
“The Pick-to-Light system will make our picking more efficient,” explained Ammie Rabicke, Chicagoland’s director of Operations. “Because it’s so easy to learn, this will be a good place to start new hires.”
Ammie continued, “We’re all extremely excited to move into the new DC, with new technology that will help us provide even better service to our customers.”

Crystals, the retail and entertainment district at CityCenter, has achieved LEED®+ Gold Core & Shell certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), making it the world's largest retail district to receive this level of recognition.
(PR Newswire, 2009, October 22, par.1)
Opening in December, CityCenter was created with a vision to introduce a new level of environmental consciousness to the world-famous Strip and has emerged as a leader in sustainable urban development. Crystals' achievement marks the fourth LEED Gold certification for CityCenter; previous recipients included 1. ARIA Resort's hotel tower, 2. ARIA's convention center and theater, and 3. Vdara Hotel & Spa. CityCenter is poised to achieve a combination of LEED Gold and Silver ratings throughout its remaining hotels, residences, dining and public spaces.
(PR Newswire, 2009, October 22, par.1)
Under the LEED for Core & Shell rating system, USGBC evaluated the entire district with the exception of the tenants' interior spaces. This enables tenants to capitalize on green strategies implemented throughout Crystals, including energy and water efficiencies, enhanced indoor air quality, sustainable building materials and an abundance of natural light.

Staples announced that its store in Roslindale, Mass., is its first location to be awarded Gold certification in Leadership Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) by the U.S. Green Building Council.
(CSA, 2009, October 26, par.1)
The store includes 39 roof skylights that will provide natural lighting for the store and limit use of artificial lighting during the day. It also includes an energy-efficient roof that is super-insulated to reduce heat gain in the summer and heat loss in the winter, as well as construction materials that incorporate recycled content, including drywall, concrete and carpet.
(CSA, 2009, October 26, par.2)
The Roslindale Staples uses approximately 34% less energy than a standard store. It is currently testing an Isuzu Hybrid truck for deliveries around Boston, and limits the speed on all delivery trucks to 60 miles per hour, improving fuel economy by 23% and lowering emissions.

A two-storey, 2,800-sq.-ft modern design in Decatur, Georgia by Robert M. Cain, proves its competence as a clean design being awarded the highest possible LEED rating – Platinum – for having exceeded the requirements by a significant 11 points and being certified “Energy Star”.
What is so unique about the RainShine House to make it a prominent example of green architectural design? Above all, it is the butterfly shaped roof that collects the rain for recycling. Photovoltaic cells mounted on the roof are positioned southward to take full advantage of the solar energy. The roof, being suspended on the continious celerestroies also “lets the sunshine in” and saves extra energy.A two-storey, 2,800-sq.-ft modern design in Decatur, Georgia by Robert M. Bernie Madoff didn’t want to go to Butner Federal Prison, located in a quiet suburban area outside of Durham, N.C. He would have preferred Otisville, which is just 70 miles outside of NYC, but being rich and famous doesn’t mean the feds care about your preferences. At least Madoff can take comfort in the fact that the prison where he’ll spend the remaining years of his life is green...Bernie Madoff didn’t want to go to Butner Federal Prison, located in a quiet... more

In an interview for the PGA Tour website, Justin Timberlake revealed how he saved a struggling golf course last year from development and decided to open up his own, eco-friendly version.
Ecorazzi reports that the singer's golf course will be the first Platinum LEED certified green course in the US, which means it will be 100% eco-friendly and will also feature “a renewable energy field and a walking trail with educational placards and seating for the public to learn about responsible energy and natural resource usage.”
As you can see in the picture, Justin is taking care of each single grass blade himself.
