At least 16 people have been killed during a US drone attack in Pakistan’s northwestern tribal belt, security officials say.
A Pakistani security official said that the drone struck a home used by militants in Dwasarak village, about 40 km west of Wana, on Saturday.
“The locals have pulled 16 bodies and some survivors from the debris of the compound that was hit by the missiles,” the officials told DPA on condition of anonymity.
Two US drones fired four missiles, another official added as two intelligence officials also confirmed the missile strikes.
Dozens more were injured in the attack and the death toll was expected to rise, reports say.
Over the past few years, hundreds of people, mostly civilians, have been killed in similar US attacks in the region.
Washington claims the strikes target militants. However, Islamabad has repeatedly condemned the attacks, saying they violate Pakistan’s sovereignty.
The issue of civilian casualties has strained relations between Islamabad and Washington with the Pakistani government repeatedly objecting to the attacks.
Despite Islamabad’s repeated protests, however, Washington continues its drone attacks on the Pakistani side of the border with Afghanistan, which has led to a strong anti-US sentiment among the Pakistanis.

Giant unmanned airships that can fly for up to three weeks at a time could soon be providing cover for British soldiers in Afghanistan.
The LEMV (long endurance multi intelligence vehicle) is being developed by a team of British and American engineers and will give troops on the ground valuable surveillance information.
The helium-filled drone will, when it takes to the skies sometime next summer, become the world’s longest endurance UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle).
Packed with reconnaissance systems, the LEMV will be able to operate autonomously at altitudes of around 22000 feet for 21 days at a time, and travelling at speeds of up to 80 knots.
The aircraft - the first of three similar three similar vehicles - is expected to make its maiden flight next summer and will be deployed in Afghanistan by January 2012.
There are 7,000 unmanned aerial vehicles in use by the armed forces and the Predator UAV has already been used on many occasions to carry out attacks on Taliban positions in Afghanistan

Nine people were killed Friday night when a suspected U.S. drone struck in Pakistan's North Waziristan near the border with Afghanistan, two local officials said.
The dead consisted of two children, two women and five men, Pakistani intelligence and administrative officials said.
The U.S. military routinely offers no comment on reported drone attacks. However, it is the only country operating in the region known to have the ability to launch missiles from drones, which are controlled remotely.

My next Vanguard special due out Dec 2, is called Remote Control Warfare. Without giving too much away the premise is simple. As warfare evolves its becoming increasingly sophisticated, and now technology is allowing us to conduct over the horizon warfare in a way we never could before. One of the technologies we look at is the Predator drone. The Predator is becoming an increasingly famous player on the battlefield in Afghanistan and Pakistan. But one of the interesting things I found when I was researching this story, with producer Lauren Cerre, is that the Predator is actually being employed in over a dozen countries right now. And sure enough it related to two of my old stories, Pirates and Mogadishu. They are using the predator to patrol over 2.1 million square miles of ocean in the Gulf of Aden which has become a hotbed of maritime piracy.
What Lauren and I found on our journey around the country looking at the changing face of warfare, was that war is rapidly is starting to more and more resemble a video game. In one scene we even go to a military recruiting center that uses video games to solicit tech savvy gamers into the Army to fight future wars. Since the Predator is kind of the mother of all remote control technologies, and they are actually employing it against pirates right now, I couldn’t help but think that the gaming industry cant be far behind. There is actually a blurring of the line between actual war, and video games that depict it. Although I'm not a gamer at all (as is very obvious in the story as I crash about everything they have me play), I am pretty sure that a counter-piracy video game would be pretty cool, and realistic too. So, pirates, video, games, remote control warfare; that’s got to be a winning combination. Thank you EA, you know where to send the commission check to.

For over a year now aviation experts have puzzled over the so-called "Beast of Kandahar" - some sort of unmanned aerial drone photographed in Southern Afghanistan as far back as 2007. The Air Force this week finally copped to its official existence and gave it an official name: the RQ-170 Sentinel.
Here's a picture via Maliki.com:
Drones like these are increasing in use throughout Afghanistan - a way to strike out at the enemy with minimal danger to US troops (read Wired's great article on Afghanistan's air war). This method of conducting war, from miles and miles away, is becoming ever-more popular than the traditional "boots-on-the-ground" as Vanguard's Kaj Larsen reported in Remote Control War.

"KPRC news in Houston recently filmed a secret experiment by law enforcement agencies including the Dept. of Homeland Security of a drone intended to spy on Americans.
The drone uncovered during this investigation are not like the large, expensive models used by the military for targeted strikes on militants half a world away. These are manufactured by Insitu out of Bingen, Washington (corporate offices located in Australia), only weigh about 40 pounds (18.1 kg) before monitoring equipment is installed. This model has the capacity to stay airborne for up to a day.
The Houston Police Department responded with the following statement, “Potential public safety applications include mobility, evacuations, homeland security, search and rescue, as well as tactical.”
Such benign excuses were also used during the passage of draconian bills such as FISA and the Patriot Act before it was revealed the much more insidious and rampant applications of those tools.""KPRC news in Houston recently filmed a secret experiment by law enforcement... more

Washington, Dec. 10 (ANI): The U.S. Air Force has acknowledged the existence of a new unmanned aircraft, which aeronautics fans have nicknamed the “Beast of Kandahar”, and according to an aerospace engineering expert, it has the capability of including most of Pakistan and Iran in its range.
Though no photos of the drone have been released, it is said to look very different from the Predator that is in use in Afghanistan at present.
According to Dr. Jamey D. Jacob, an associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at Oklahoma State University, the Air Force may also be flying covert missions over Pakistan to help root out al Qaeda operations or even Osama bin Laden.
Another source notes that the unmanned aircraft was tested in Nevada, where the F-117 stealth aircraft also debuted.
‘The military has several flight test ranges it can fly from. Since it carries the ‘R’ designation it doesn’t carry weapons, its surveillance only,’ Jacob said, adding “It’s roughly the same size — span, tip-to-tip — as the Predator so it will have roughly similar payload capability, 500-1,000 lbs of surveillance equipment. However, it is shaped like the B-2 stealth bomber. If you look at the platform, it is very close to the B-2 design.’
Dr. Jacob says the tail-less, flying wing design lends to this stealth capability, but unmanned aircraft may also have special paint — or ’secret sauce’ — and composite materials that provide additional stealth.

For about $20, this tiny HoverDrone will hover and flash its little lights. And then the dog will eat it.
Sorry, it's inevitable, as proven in the ThinkGeek demo video above.
ThinkGeek is billing this as the smallest hovering device they've ever sold, so there's that too. Requires a handful of AA's and the controller has the ability to control two drones at once.

P. W. Singer explores the advances of robotics in warfare in his book Wired for War: The Robotics Revolution and 21st Century Conflict.
As Singer explains to Terry Gross, the military has used more than 5,300 unmanned planes in Iraq, including one called the Predator. About the size of a Cessna plane, the Predator started out as a reconnaissance tool before the military decided to arm it.
"Now it's being used in hunter-killer roles," says Singer.
Singer says that the advances push into the realm of science fiction — and raise a host of ethical dilemmas: "We have to figure out, what are the legal consequences of what you could call unmanned slaughter? And who do you hold responsible?"
The psychological ramifications of soldiers who are at war, but not physically in war, are also up for debate. Singer points out that the pilots who are controling the robotic planes can go from killing enemy combatants to sitting down to eat dinner with their kids in a matter of 20 minutes.

"Islamist insurgents say they have shot down an unmanned US spy drone off the coast of southern Somalia.
An al-Shabab official said the drone had been hit by anti-aircraft fire and had fallen into the Indian Ocean near the port of Kismayo.

He says that, if confirmed, it would be the first time that al-Shabab fighters had shot down a US drone.
