Sixth form student Edward Woollard was jailed for two years and eight months today after he was found guilty of violent disorder.
The 18-year-old admitted hurling a fire extinguisher of the roof of the Tory Party headquarters on November 10th last year, after film emerged of him in the act.
Woollard will serve at least half of his sentence in a young offenders institution.
In sentencing, the judge said: 'It is deeply regrettable, indeed a shocking thing, for a court to have sentence a young man such as you to a substantial term of custody.
'But the courts have a duty to provide the community with such protection from violence as they can and this means sending out a very clear message to anyone minded to behave in this way that an offence of this seriousness will not be tolerated.
'The right of peaceful protest is a precious one. Those who abuse it and use the occasion to indulge in serious violence must expect a lengthy sentence of immediate custody.'

A newly appointed Tory peer has today apologised for saying changes to welfare payments would give people on benefits "every incentive" to "breed".Howard Flight told the Evening Standard: "We're going to have a system where the middle classes are discouraged from breeding because it's jolly expensive but for those on benefit there is every incentive."The new peer blames the Lib Dems for forcing David Cameron to agree to bad policies, including cutting child benefit for high earners. He later said he would like to withdraw the remark.Prime Minister David Cameron told a news conference: "I don't agree with his comments."
Cameron was in trouble himself today after it was reported that he made a joke about the Speaker of the Commons, comparing him to one of the seven dwarfs.
It was announced last week that Flight, a former MP, would become a member of the House of Lords. It is not believed that Cameron will block his peerage despite his gaffe.

Tory blogger Guido Fawkes is offering a £1,000 reward to anyone who can name the student protester who threw a fire extinguisher off the roof at Wednesday's demonstration. "The fire extinguisher went very close to two territorial support group officers," said Peter Smyth of the Metropolitan Police Federation.
"It went down the back of one officer and grazed the knees of another. Clearly, that is a very serious offence and we are attempting to bring the person who did that to justice."Blogger Paul Staines – who writes the Guido Fawkes site, wants anyone who knows the "thug" in the photo who is holding a fire extinguisher on the roof of Millbank Tower, London, which houses Conservative Party headquarters, at police officers below to email him, and said ""Your information will treated as in confidence and you do not have to give your name…"Not that we think a lot of Tory informants were at the protest...

As Twitter user Paul Chambers found out, it's not a good idea to use the site to make jokey threats because there's always a chance humourless authorities won't be laughing. After he tweeted a fake bomb scare, Chambers was arrested and lost his job.
One person who definitely hasn't taken Chambers' treatment on board is Birmingham Tory councillor Gareth Compton.
He's been arrested after a message appeared on his private Twitter account that called for Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, a Muslim newspaper columnist, to be stoned to death.
He has apologised for the remark, calling it "an ill-conceived attempt at humour".
A Conservative spokesperson said Mr Compton's language was "unacceptable", and he had been suspended from the party indefinitely, pending a further investigation.
A spokeswoman for West Midlands Police said: "We can confirm a 38-year-old man from Harborne has been arrested for an offence under section 127 (1a) of the Communications Act of 2003 on suspicion of sending an offensive or indecent message.

Paul Chambers loses airport bomb threat prank appeal
Paul Chambers, the man convicted of "menace for threatening to blow up an airport on Twitter for a laugh, has lost his appeal.Chambers, a 27-year-old accountant whose online courtship with another tweeter led to the "foolish prank", had hoped that a crown court would dismiss his conviction and £1,000 fine without a full hearing. But Judge Jacqueline Davies instead handed down a devastating finding at Doncaster which dismissed Chambers's appeal on every count. After reading out his tweet – "Crap! Robin Hood airport is closed. You've got a week and a bit to get your shit together otherwise I'm blowing the airport sky high!!" – she found that it contained menace and Chambers must have known that it might be taken seriously. On Twitter, hundreds of uses are tweeting jokey threats with the hashtag #twitterjoketrial in protest.

Thousands of students, trade unionists, community groups and others marched through the streets of London in protest following the brutal spending cuts issued by the Tory government yesterday.
Students from University College London and surrounding universities initiated the march on their campus and were soon joined by thousands of others united in the cause. Banners on display reflected the diversity of those protesting, including unions such as Unison, the National Union of Teachers and the GMB. The procession passed through Central London and ended up at a rally outside Downing Street. Simultaneously thousands of demonstrators were also gathered at a rally at Lincoln’s Inn Fields where Tony Benn, as well as other trade union and movement leaders addressed thousands of angered protesters. The Lincoln’s Inn Fields protesters later marched towards Downing Street.
Local protests were also organised around the UK; a clear indicator of the public’s outrage at the proposed rebudgeting of the country’s coffers.

A gay Conservative MP has urged Foreign Secretary William Hague to intervene in the case of an Iranian teenager sentenced to death for sodomy.
Iain Stewart, the MP for Milton Keynes South, called for pressure on Iran to show some "human compassion" in the case of Ebrahim Hamidi.
Mr Hamidi, 18, was sentenced to death two years ago at the age of 16 for an unspecified assault on another man. Homosexuality is illegal in Iran.
Although the alleged victim withdrew his allegation, a provincial court is insisting on the death sentence despite the Iranian Supreme Court rejecting the guilty verdict and execution order.
The judge in the case is using a legal provision which allows for subjective judicial rulings where there is no conclusive evidence.
Mr Hamidi is understood to be heterosexual and gay rights campaigners such as Peter Tatchell say that this is an instance where straight people can be executed for homosexuality offences.
Mr Stewart, who is also the deputy chairman of Conservative LGBT group, LGBTory, said that the Foreign Office should pressure Iran to free Mr Hamidi or at least save him from the death penalty.
He added: “It is an outrage that this young man faces execution. In the first place it is utterly abhorrent that homosexual acts are illegal and carry draconian penalties in Iran. That, plus the fact that there is considerable doubt as to whether the event actually took place, makes it unthinkable that Ebrahim should lose his life.
"I am calling on the Foreign Office to do whatever it can to exert diplomatic pressure on Iran to show some human compassion and free this young man, or at very least commute the death penalty.
"In the meantime, my heart goes out to Ebrahim and his family at this dreadful time”.
Matthew Sephton, LGBTory chairman, added that the coalition government has promised to use its influence abroad to change views on "cruel and outdated" laws against homosexuality.
He said: ”I just hope that Mr Hague is able to speak to the Iranian government and that Ebrahim is saved from such barbaric treatment from his own country.”
PinkNews.co.uk is awaiting comment from the Foreign Office.
Mr Hamidi was arrested with three other men in 2008, after a fight between two disputing families. The alleged victim initially claimed he had been sexually assaulted but later withdrew his allegation, saying his family had pressured him into making it.
The three other men were cleared of the charges. All four said they had been tortured and Mr Hamidi said he had signed a confession which was not true.
Previously, he was represented by the human rights lawyer Mohammad Mostafaei but Mr Mostafaei has gone into hiding after a warrant for his arrest was issued.
The lawyer is also representing Sakineh Ashtiani, the Iranian woman who has been sentenced to death by stoning on charges of adultery.
Speaking last week, UK-based gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell said: "Ebrahim's case shows the flaws and failings of the Iranian legal system. It is further evidence that innocent people are sentenced on false charges of homosexuality."
"An international campaign can help stop Ebrahim's execution, just as a similar global campaign has, so far, halted the stoning to death of Sakineh Ashtiani."A gay Conservative MP has urged Foreign Secretary William Hague to intervene in the... more

A TORY mayor has apologised after handing two young teens eight bottles of beer as a prize at a fete.
Cllr Colin Bothwell gave the lager to a 15-year-old lad and his 13-year-old friend, saying: "You can have these."

In 2008, the Foo Fighters got all angry with U.S senator John McCain for using one of their songs in his ultimately unsuccessful election campaign, and last year, the British National party was forced to remove a Manic Street Preachers track from one of its YouTube videos after legal threats from the band's record label. Now in a similar vein, Dad-rock band Keane are upset with the Conservative party after the Tories used their 2003 song “Everybody’s Changing” at the launch of the Tory manifesto at Battersea Power Station yesterday.Keane's drummer, Richard Hughes, told his 2,380 followers on Twitter that he was "horrified. to be clear - we were not asked. i will not vote for them." If only the Tories had dug around a bit more on his Twitter account - Hughes is also following the Lib Dems Press office, The Green Party and the BBC's Springwatch, so it's easy to work out his political interests and the fact he likes lovely little lamby-kins being born.

Conservative Party leader David Cameron has been accused of slipping up over his party's votes on gay equality issues.
Mr Cameron agreed to an interview with Gay Times magazine, which Conservative party sources said he was not expecting to be filmed.
In it, Mr Cameron was asked why did not force his MPs and MEPs to vote for gay equality measures, rather than allowing free votes.
Tory MEPs in the European Parliament refused to support a motion which condemned a new homophobic law in Lithuania last year. The law bans the promotion of "non-traditional" families

Those crafty chaps at Tory HQ have found a cunning way to get around UK election laws that would prevent them from airing party ads on TV and radio. And that way is... Spotify!
Yes, Dave and the boys will be buying up advertising spots on the Swedish music streaming service (y'know they also have non-Swedish music, it's not just ABBA, The Cardigans and Ace of Base!)
Even more cunningly, they're intending to target the adverts based on the location of the listener - doing this on a postcode basis. Quite a clever way of highlighting local issues - which tend to strike a chord with the electorate more than national and international ones.
Only flaw in the plan is that Spotify, although popular with many, is hardly a mass market medium. Those crafty chaps at Tory HQ have found a cunning way to get around UK election laws... more
