It took 20 firefighters and several police officers to rescue an obese UK woman who hadn’t left her home in three years.
Joanne Ettiene, 45, weighs 560 pounds, and needed urgent medical treatment for severe infections in her legs and feet. Paramedics were dialed to rush the woman to the hospital, but when they arrived there was no way to move the woman through a door.
Rescue workers had to create a massive hole through her bedroom and living room walls in order to remove her from the home. “The firemen, there must have been 20 of them, had to come and they had to smash my bedroom door and then my bedroom wall and put barriers up to stop it crumbling,” she said. “That’s the only way they could get me out. My whole bungalow is a wreck now.”
Doctors say she might remain in the hospital for six months to treat infections to her legs and feet. The mother of three says her weight ballooned in 2008 after she contracted a staph infection, and subsequently became immobile.
She said: “I’m in bed 24/7 and all I want to do is see where I live, I don’t even know what the area is like. I want to be able to get to the shops and look around but I can’t even make myself a cup of tea.”
A neighbor who witnessed the eight hour ordeal said it was the first time she’s ever seen Joanne. “It was the first time I’d ever seen her, even though we’ve lived next door to each other for three years.”

An obese woman has been left humiliated on the web after an onlooker secretly recorded the woman walking, then uploaded the video to show her unflattering figure and titled it “The FUPA Queen.” The large woman is seen strolling through a parking lot with an extraordinary amount of lower-body fat barely contained in her trousers. Florida state prosecutors say a Florida man who weighs 600 pounds is now too large and too ill to appear in court to face charges of felony petty theft for conning local business out of refunds on mass orders of food as part of a con he’s been running since 1991.
According to reports, 38-year-old George Jolicoeur–has been arrested more than 26 times for running scams on local restaurants. Witnesses said he ordered large quantities of food, then returned to the restaurant and claimed the food was spoiled. And he even posed as a police officer or firefighter as a ploy to guilt the businesses into giving the refunds.
Some of the scams were at fast food restaurants like Taco Bell, Firehouse Subs and Steak ’N Shake. He would order enough items to feed a large party, then consume the food and return to say something went wrong with the pricey orders. Some items included things like $63 in ice cream cones and $41 worth of subs. In one complaint to a manager, he said he found hair in six milkshakes.
Many of the businesses he attempted to dupe refused to issue him money, and called the police. But on one occasion, Firehouse Subs managers issued him a refund because he caused a large scene.
His last scam was in 2007 when he demanded a refund from a Oviedo 7-Eleven store on $50 worth of beef jerky he claimed was moldy. But when officers tried to arrest him later that day, his failing health landed him in the hospital, and later a nursing facility where he requires a respirator to help him breathe.
Prosecutors were then faced with a difficult logistical problem in getting Jolicoeur to stand trial in a courtroom, given his medical condition. Instead, the state offered him a deal to plead no contest to five misdemeanor petty theft counts, pay $1,365 in court costs plus unspecified restitution, and he wouldn’t to go to jail or serve probation. Jolicoeur accepted the deal last Wednesday. “He’s in his prison cell,” an assistant state attorney told reporters “He’s not getting out of that bed.”

You will find that over time you will walk faster before being tired (you’ll be less tired after 2 months of work at the beginning, for sure). This will mean that your state form is getting better. But still remember that interval training with a phase of very fast walking alternating with a phase of recovery is the best way for obese people to lose weight. Gradually, as the state form of the obese person improves, it may extend the time to do the walking intervals to 45 minutes per day. Needless to 90 minutes once every 2 days, the importance is to make this rapid march every day. Regularity is more important than quantity regarding brisk walking intervals.

WASHINGTON—One-third of American adults are obese, according to new U.S. government figures released Wednesday, but the rate of increase seen in recent decades has slowed.
Figures from the National Center for Health Statistics showed 34% of American adults age 20 and older were obese in 2007-08 while 68% were considered overweight or obese. In children ages 2 through 19, 17% were considered obese while 32% were considered overweight. Broadly, the figures are similar to rates seen in 1999-2000.
"Obesity remains high and is a significant public-health problem in the U.S.," said Cynthia Ogden, one of the main researchers involved in tabulating the data and an epidemiologist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's health-statistics unit.
But, she said, the rapid increases in obesity rates seen during the 1980s and 1990s are slowing for most groups. Researchers did find an increase in the number of boys who are considered the "very heaviest," or those who are above the 97th percentile on a growth chart.
The figures are taken from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which are a set of studies that are designed to assess the health and nutritional status of adults and children in the United States. Data from the surveys are collected on two-year cycles with the most-recent data being from 2007-08.
"I see this as relatively good news," said William Dietz, the director of CDC's division of nutrition, physical activity and obesity. "It suggests we've halted the progression of the epidemic."
Still, much needs to be done in order to reverse the trend, and the White House is expected to soon announce new efforts to address obesity including getting involved in efforts this year to rewrite legislation that governs school breakfast and lunch programs. "The administration recognizes that control of obesity is related to health reform," Dr. Dietz said.
The obesity figures were taken from 5,555 adults and nearly 4,000 children who are considered representative of the U.S. population. For adults, researchers looked at body mass index, a measure that estimates body fat by using a person's height and weight in the calculation. Those with BMIs of 25 to 29.9 are considered overweight and those who are considered obese have a BMI of 30 or greater. A BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is considered a normal weight for adults.
In children, researchers look at growth charts that plot children's weight and height and then compare the charts by age group. Children at or above the 95th percentile for weight are considered obese while those at or above the 85th percentile are considered overweight.
Dr. Ogden explained that for girls and women obesity rates were stable over the last decade with 35% of women considered obese in 2007-08. In men, however, there was an increase in obesity rates with 27% of men considered obese in 1999-2000 to 32% in 2007-08. But the increase in men happened from 1999 to 2003 and has remained stable since then.

Watching television for hour upon hour obviously isn't the best way to spend leisure time -- inactivity has been linked to obesity and heart disease. But a new study quantifies TV viewing's effect on risk of death.
Researchers found that each hour a day spent watching TV was linked with an 18% greater risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, an 11% greater risk of all causes of death, and a 9% increased risk of death from cancer.
The study, released Monday in Circulation, a journal of the American Heart Assn., looked at health data among 8,800 men and women older than 25 who were part of the Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle Study. Participants recorded their television viewing hours for a week, and researchers separated the results by amount of viewing: those who watched less than two hours of TV a day, those who watched two to four hours a day, and those who watched more than four hours a day.
The subjects also had oral glucose tolerance tests to determine blood sugar and gave blood samples to establish cholesterol levels at the beginning of the study. People with a history of cardiovascular disease were not included. In a follow up about six years later, 87 people had died due to cardiovascular disease and 125 of cancer.
Researchers found a strong connection between TV hours and death from cardiovascular disease, not just among the overweight and obese, but among people who had a healthy weight and exercised.
People who watched more than four hours a day showed an 80% greater risk of death from cardiovascular disease and a 46% higher risk of all causes of death compared with those who watched fewer than two hours a day, suggesting that being sedentary could have general deleterious effects. The numbers were the same after the researchers controlled for smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, an unhealthy diet and leisure-time exercise.
"What we showed was that irrespective of a person's exercise level, sitting for four or more hours watching television was linked to a significant increase in risk of death compared to watching lower amounts of TV," said Dr. David Dunstan, lead author of the study and professor and head of the Physical Activity Laboratory at the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute in Victoria, Australia. "The message here is that in addition to promoting regular exercise, we also need to promote avoiding long periods of sitting, such as spending long hours in front of the computer screen."
To him, the results weren't unexpected. "When we're in that sitting posture, we're not using our muscles, and we know from extensive evidence that muscle contractions are important for the body's regulatory processes, such as the ability to break down glucose and use it as energy." That can cause insulin resistance, which can trigger a spike in blood sugar levels, possibly leading to type 2 diabetes.
Dr. Prediman K. Shah, director of the cardiology division of the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute, agreed. He pointed out that muscles become deconditioned when not used, triggering harmful physiological changes. "If your activity is slowing down, you metabolize cholesterol less and synthesize it more," he said.
Even sporadic exercisers who sit for long periods need to increase their daily activity.
"The physical activity we do over a 24-hour period is important," says Dr. Gerald F. Fletcher, a cardiologist at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla., and a spokesman for the American Heart Assn.
That means taking the stairs instead of the elevator, gardening, walking the dog . . .
"For couch potatoes, sitting on your duff is hazardous to your health," Shah said. "The bottom line is keep moving."

A gang in the Peruvian jungle has been killing people and draining fat from the corpses to sell on the black market for use in cosmetics.
Three suspects confessed to killing five people, but the gang may have been involved in dozens more, said Colonel Jorge Mejia, chief of Peru's anti-kidnapping police.
Mejia said two of the suspects were arrested carrying bottles of liquid human fat and told police it was worth $60,000 a gallon.
The fat was sold to intermediaries in Peru's capital, Lima, and police suspect it was then sold to cosmetic companies in Europe.
Imagine how much money they could make from cosmetics if they went to America!

They're just Americans who turned 60 and said, "Screw it, I'm done walking." These people are furious at the high cost of health care, so they blame illegals, who don't even get health care. Underground stations in Sao Paulo, Brazil are being fitted with special enlarged seats to accommodate obese people.
The blue chairs are nearly twice as wide as the normal chairs and can support up to 40 stone without breaking.
The seats are accompanied by signs picturing a rotund customer with the words "Priority chair for obese people".

A MUM-of-six who has been told her obese kids will be taken into care if she does not stop them over-eating is PREGNANT again.
Last night a worried relative revealed the 40-year-old woman, who is 23st, is due to give birth soon.
The news comes only a week after we told how Dundee City Council is forking out £114,000 on minders in a last-ditch bid to stop her family of fatties guzzling pizzas and bottles of cola in front of the telly.
"She'd rather put her kids in front of the TV with a bottle of cola than let them out to play. It's pure laziness.
"She doesn't want to have to wash their clothes."
The mum is a size 26. Her 53-year-old hubby is 18 stone and has a heart problem.
Their kids include a 12-year-old boy who is 16st and a 4st girl of three.
The close relative, who can't be named, said: "There is no excuse for what they do to their children. We really fear for them.
"Their mum never cooks. We used to visit to cook proper meals and take the children out.
"But we got so much abuse from the parents that we've washed our hands of them."
The relative added: "It's not just the obesity that worries us. They annoy their neighbours.
"They have trained the kids to be aggressive - they're like a family from HELL.
"Social workers can't cope, so they've farmed them out.
"But it won't work - they don't WANT to be helped."
Dundee-based Families Project plans to move the family into a residential unit where staff will monitor meals and force them to get fit.
Yesterday the family's father said: "No comment."

South Carolina authorities have located a 555-pound teenager and his mother, who faces a charge of violating a custody order, police said Thursday.
Alexander Deundray Draper, 14, of Travelers Rest, South Carolina, and his mother, Jerri Althea Gray, were located at about 4:30 p.m. near a laundromat in Baltimore, Maryland, by the Baltimore County Sheriff's Office, said Lt. Shea Smith of the Greenville County Sheriff's Office in Greenville, South Carolina.
"Investigators were able to develop information that led them to have Maryland authorities check a laundromat where Draper and Gray were believed to be parked near," Smith said in a written statement.
After being checked by an Emergency Medical Services specialist, the boy was turned over to the Maryland Department of Social Services prior to his planned return to the Department of Social Services in South Carolina, it said.
His mother was taken into custody and will be extradited to Greenville, South Carolina, on an outstanding warrant, it said.
Earlier in the day officials said the boy "is possibly at a stage of critical health risk."
Gray was supposed to appear in family court Tuesday with her son and failed to do so, the sheriff's office said. During the family court hearing, the boy was ordered into state custody because of medical neglect, as well as his mother's failure to appear. The Department of Social Services then contacted the sheriff's office, authorities said.
The warrant said Gray was served with papers Monday and told to report to court for a hearing in which the department would seek state custody of Draper.
