Manchester City have lost out to Italian side AC Milan in the race to sign Barcelona playmaker Ronaldinho.
Milan will pay Spanish side Barcelona just £14.6m for his services, with the figure likely to be increased by performance-related bonuses.
The two-time Fifa World Player of the Year's time at Barcelona effectively came to an end in June when new manager Pep Guardiola announced the playmaker was surplus to requirements.
Ronaldinho helped Barcelona win back-to-back Spanish league titles (2004-05, 2005-06) and the Champions League in 2006, but failed to cement a regular place in the starting XI last season because of injury and fitness issues.

World champion Tyson Gay's dream of an Olympics double ended in pain when he crashed out of the U.S. 200 meters quarter-finals on Saturday.
Already qualified for Beijing in the 100 meters, Gay had run only 12 strides, about 40 meters, of the 200 meters when he grabbed at his left hamstring and tumbled to track with a severe cramp.
He lay there for several minutes before he was taken away from the facility in a cart.
Gay had won the 100 meters last Sunday in a wind-assisted time of 9.68 seconds, the fastest time ever run under any conditions. He had set the national record of 9.77 seconds the previous day.

Shaquille O'Neal will lose his special deputy's badge in Phoenix Maricopa County because of language he used in a rap video that mocks former teammate Kobe Bryant.
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said the Phoenix Suns center's use of a racially derogatory word and other foul language left him no choice. Arpaio made Shaq a special deputy in 2006 and promoted him to colonel of his largely ceremonial posse later that year.
"I want his two badges back," Arpaio said. "Because if any one of my deputies did something like this, they're fired. I don't condone this type of racial conduct."
haq was seen in a video posted on the celebrity news and gossip Web site TMZ.com rapping that "Kobe couldn't do without me." O'Neal skewers the Lakers' star, with whom he won three straight NBA titles from 2000-2002 while with Los Angeles, for not being able to win a championship without him.
"I was freestyling. That's all. It was all done in fun. Nothing serious whatsoever," O'Neal told ESPN.com Monday. A call to the Suns on Tuesday seeking comment from O'Neal was referred to his public relations firm, which didn't immediately respond.
Arpaio, who describes himself as "America's Toughest Sheriff" and is best known for feeding jail inmates green bologna, clothing them in pink underwear, and making them work on chain gangs, said he didn't expect his actions would teach Shaq a lesson. But he hoped he learns that as a role model who wants to someday be a full-time sheriff, he needs to know his words matter.
"Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I don't think that either conduct should be out there publicly, even if media wasn't there," Arpaio said.

The Curt Schilling saga may have come to an end. In his weekly interview on WEEI this morning, the Red Sox right-hander announced he will have surgery on right shoulder, ending his 2008 season and likely his career.
"There's a pretty decent chance that I've thrown my last pitch forever," the 41-year-old righthander said. "I don't want it to end this way, but if this is the way it has to end, I'm OK with that. If it's over and my last pitch was in the 2007 World Series, I'm OK with that. I just can't stress enough where I am mentally with this. I have not a regret in the world.
"None of this makes me bitter or angry. It is what it is. In that sense, honestly, it's very, very easy for me, because of what I've been able to experience compared to what I wanted when I first started my career. But if I have some say in how this is gonna end, I want it to be different than what it is right now."The Curt Schilling saga may have come to an end. In his weekly interview on WEEI this... more

Willie Randolph is out as manager of the New York Mets, fired 21/2 months into a disappointing season that has followed the team's colossal collapse last September.
Bench coach Jerry Manuel takes over on an interim basis for Randolph, who led the Mets to within one win of the 2006 World Series. They got off to a strong start again last year but plummeted down the stretch and have been unable to rebound.
A preseason favorite to win the NL pennant, the $138 million Mets (34-35) had won two in a row when Randolph was let go early Tuesday morning -- making him the first major league manager to get fired this season.
Pitching coach Rick Peterson and first base coach Tom Nieto also were fired in an enormous overhaul that came at a stunning time -- about two hours after New York's 9-6 victory at the Los Angeles Angels.

One shot behind on the 18th hole after a collapse no one saw coming, Woods birdied the 18th hole to force sudden death at Torrey Pines against a 45-year-old with a creaky back who simply wouldn't go away.
But that one extra hole was enough to doom Mediate, trying to become the oldest U.S. Open champion at 45 years, 6 months. He put his tee shot in the bunker at No. 7, knocked his approach off a cart path and against the bleachers, chipped some 18 feet past the hole and missed the par putt.
Woods, who delivered so many spectacular moments over four days along the Pacific bluffs, only needed a two-putt par at the end to win the U.S. Open for the third time, and the first since it last was held on a public course at Bethpage Black in 2002.
Woods joins Jack Nicklaus as the only players to capture the career Grand Slam three times over.

Oscar Pistorius, the amazing double-amputee runner, can compete to win a place on South Africa's Olympic team. The Swiss-based Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled that his prosthetic limbs don't give him an advantage over other runners, reversing a January ruling that was made against Pistorius by the International Association of Athletics Federations.
Using the blades, his adaptive prosthetic equipment, Pistorius has already broken Paralympic records in the 100, 200 and 400 meter events. And while he did not meet the Olympic qualifying times for those races, last year Pistorius finished second in the 400 meter event at the 2007 South African National Championships, which should make him competitive in his attempt to win a place on South Africa’s Olympic 4×400 meter relay team.
