Crystal Castles prefer traveling light. While the hotly-tipped and already hotly-contested Toronto duo's basement party set-up doesn't look like it'll fill up the passenger seat on a tour van, they also like to play fast and loose with their associations. They've remixed at a Hot Chip-like pace for everyone from Bloc Party to Uffie to Klaxons, but they're not a part of your nu-rave genre (really, who is?), or blog house for that matter. Their debut LP partly picks from 7" and 12"s that have been available in some format since 2005, and it's every bit as difficult to pin down.
The lead track samples DFA 1979's "Dead Womb" and places those vocals atop a cyclical synth loop while they get disembodied and chopped up-- both function as song-length hooks. But the thing's called "Untrust Us" (natch) and by the next one, they're making good on that claim. "Alice Practice" absolutely sears with megaphoned (emphasis on mega) barking and Ethan Fawn's Atari-laced keyboards going on the fritz and racking up free plays. Ah, so this is what an arcade fire sounds like.

Check out this video for dd/mm/yyyy's video for their song, Infinity Skull Cube. The Toronto based band are known for their abstract sound involving unconventional instruments. In 2008, they toured along side Crystal Castles. They recently released their third album, "Black Square", on March 17th.

This was meant to be something entirely different. I had wanted to make a cheeky 'how to make your own music video' piece that would accompany a music mix that i posted on my website (travisdmathews.com). It was going to be the poor man's solution to gift giving this year.
But having never made a music video before I got a little romanced by the whole process, losing sight of that original goal to make a 'how-to' video. Most of the production I do is serious-minded, so this was a welcome reprieve just in time for the holidays. This was meant to be something entirely different. I had wanted to make a cheeky... more

NME's annual light-hearted Cool List is published today, with the top accolade going to Crystal Castles frontwoman Alice Glass, the second woman ever to top the the list since it began in 2002.
The NME's new bands editor Alex Miller says: "Alice Glass is the opposite of the socialite queen bees running UK music scenes, a woman seemingly forged from off-cuts from Dennis Hopper's desperate punk movie Out of the Blue," adding, "Does the Cool List matter? Of course not. But at least it's fun."
Following on from a controversial performance at last year's Glastonbury, Jay-Z took the number two spot ahead of MGMT's Andrew VanWyngraden (3rd) and Arctic Monkeys/The Last Shadow Puppets frontman Alex Turner (4th).

"The latest episode combines 8-bit musical plagiarism with an abuse of Creative Commons licenses. Crystal Castles is a Toronto-based band that’s gotten quite a lot of positive press for their use of 8-bit sounds, including a keyboard with an Atari chip. (And there’s the source of the problem: this stuff is "hot" partly because it’s novel to mainstream press.)
Unfortunately, some of Crystal Castles’ sound apparently isn’t their their own.
8-bit collective again noticed something is amiss, this time with their track "Insecticon." Far from simply sampling a track, the tune rearranges entire musical contents as the basis of the new tune. (Many in the 8-bit collective community at least claim they’re pro-sampling.)
There’s a difference in this case, though: the tune in question is Creative Commons-licensed. It’s possible Crystal Castles thought, incorrectly, that that meant "free." However, the CC license used specifically requires attribution, non-commercial use, and that the derivative work be released under the same license — that’s three strikes against Crystal Castles. The GPL license used in open source software has similar stipulations, and neither license means something isn’t protected by copyright law — the maker of something is still the copyright holder, and uses those rights to define the way in which they want their work used and shared.""The latest episode combines 8-bit musical plagiarism with an abuse of Creative... more
