A few months before Guns N' Roses long-anticipated "Chinese Democracy" was released, Kevin "Skwerl" Cogill leaked a few of its tracks to his website. Then the FBI invaded his house and all hell broke loose. The week of his sentencing, he sat down with infoMania's Ben Hoffman to discuss how it all went down.
The infoMania Tech Report is a weekly segment where technology guru Ben Hoffman takes a look at the newest tech products, gadgets and video games. It has been called "the funniest tech show on the web." (No source for that quote is available at this time. In fact, there's a good chance it was made up.) The day China becomes a democracy will probably be the day the entire world is liberated from governing systems. Wait a minute does that even make any sense?
I don’t know if that makes sense or not but what did catch my eye today where some new ads by MTV China! That’s right you heard it from Casualty of Design first China actually has an MTV.
Well if you still don’t believe us you can go to the MTV-China website and check it out for yourself, its 100% legit. I don’t know why maybe its just me but for some reason I didn’t think the Chinese government would let MTV into their living rooms. I mean for god sakes the Dali Lama can’t even be talked about in China let alone watched on television!
In any case its nice to see the tentacles of our American way of life stretching across the Pacific to the mystical land of China. This is great now they can see all the wonderful things they make for us at dirt wages marketed and sold to the masses for hundreds of times more money then they where paid to make it. Ah the wonderful cycle of demand, manufacture, consumer, advertiser… BANK!
Is it just me or does anyone else here think its odd you can't watch the Dali Lama on TV but you can watch "The Real World"... which ironically draws you away from the REAL WORLD!
Peace,

Nessuna reunion. Nessuna reunion. On this edition of Critic Critic, the Daily Fix turns to its very own puffed up blowhard, Peter Grumbine to get his take on the "comebacks" of 2008. After years of non-existence, New Kids on the Block reunited and released their new album, "The Block." Robert Plant re-surfaced, this time with Alison Krauss, not Led Zeppelin. Ike Turner tried to make a comeback, but went away instead. Axl Rose spent 14 years on his comeback, and released Chinese Democracy this year. Britney Spears attempted a comeback last year, but is reeling in the attention with her newest album, "Circus."

Beyond the album title, Guns N' Roses, known as "Qiang Hua" in China, did not shy away from pressing Beijing's most sensitive buttons. One line in the title track has Axl Rose singing, "Blame it on the Falun Gong. They've seen the end and you can't hold on now," as if addressing Communist Party leaders. Falun Gong gained international recognition after Beijing banned the movement, saying that its adherents disturbed social stability. The album art features Beijing artist Shi Lifeng's Red Star painting, which portrays a bloodied fist holding up a star covered by flailing figures. Guns N' Roses' label, Geffen Records, told the Chinese press that it did not expect to obtain approval to distribute the album in mainland China. Access within China to the album's Web site has also reportedly been intermittent or blocked.Beyond the album title, Guns N' Roses, known as "Qiang Hua" in China, did not shy away... more

Beginning Sunday at 12:01 a.m., coupons for a free 20-ounce soda will be available for 24 hours on Dr Pepper's Web site. They'll be honored until Feb. 28.

In one of the more bizarre and, let's not be shy, pathetic marketing campaigns, Dr Pepper has pledged to give everyone that buys Guns N Roses new album Chinese Democracy a free can of its odd-tasting beverage. It's actually making good on a pledge it made 17 years ago, when it promised the freebie to all fans should GnR ever release its latest album.
Two people in the country will be denied a free can, however - ex-band members Slash and Buckethead. Dr Pepper said it was showing "solidarity" with frontman Axl Rose. However, Rose said: "As some of Buckethead's performances are on our album, I'll share my Dr Pepper with him."
Anyway, frankly, who cares? All the fuss about the record's release is bound to be far more exciting than the music itself. In one of the more bizarre and, let's not be shy, pathetic marketing campaigns, Dr... more

Bringing rock’s most notorious shaggy dog story to its conclusion, representatives of Guns N’ Roses confirmed on Wednesday that its long-delayed and expensive new album will finally be released next month.
The album, “Chinese Democracy,” will go on sale Nov. 23 at Best Buy stores and online as part of an exclusive deal, the chain and Guns N’ Roses’ record label, Geffen, announced, confirming rumors that have been circulating in the music press for weeks. It will be the first new album in 17 years by the band, which has sold more than 42 million albums in the United States, according to the Recording Industry Association of America.
“The release of ‘Chinese Democracy’ marks a historic moment in rock n’ roll,” the band’s managers, Irving Azoff and Andy Gould, said in a statement. “Guns N’ Roses fans have every reason to celebrate, for this is only the beginning.”
The album, produced by Axl Rose — the only remaining original member — and Caram Costanzo, will contain 14 songs, and Best Buy is already accepting advance orders at its Web site, bestbuy.com.
“Chinese Democracy” has been in the works for 14 years at enormous cost; a report in The New York Times in 2005 put recording expenses to that point at $13 million, based on record company documents. Many recording deadlines and release dates have come and gone over the years, exasperating fans and turning the very phrase “Chinese Democracy” into pop-culture shorthand for any endless and indulgent folly.
Mr. Rose has been promoting the album on tour since 2001, and over the years many songs have leaked on the Internet. But only recently, it seemed, did a concrete plan for the album’s release take shape.
Last month a new Guns N’ Roses song, “Shackler’s Revenge,” was released on the video game Rock Band 2, and another new song, “If the World,” plays during the closing credits of the new film “Body of Lies,” which opened last week. At 5 a.m. Wednesday, the song “Chinese Democracy” was officially released to radio stations around the country.
The fan reaction online was instantaneous. By 5:01, one listener had already posted a comment on a fan discussion page, mygnrforum.com.

Best Buy will be the exclusive retailer for Guns N' Roses decade-plus-in-the-making new album "Chinese Democracy" before year's end, sources close to the situation tell Billboard. Some details of the deal are still being worked out, including the release date.
The news brings a semblance of closure to the bizarre history of "Democracy," which Guns N' Roses has been working on since the mid-1990s. Since then, every original member of the once mighty group has left besides vocalist Axl Rose, and millions of dollars have been spent working on the new material.
"Democracy" was most recently on the Interscope release schedule in March 2007. The endless delays encountered by the project reached comic levels this spring, when soft drink manufacturer Dr Pepper offered to send a free can of the beverage to "everyone in America" (excluding ex-GNR members Slash and Buckethead) if "Chinese Democracy" were to arrive anytime during the calendar year 2008.
In June, nine purported "mastered, finished" tracks from the album were leaked online, prompting an FBI investigation into their source. A sign "Chinese Democracy" was perhaps finally nearing release came in July, when the band agreed to debut new track "Shackler's Revenge" in the video game "Rock Band 2," which hit stores earlier this month.
Guns N' Roses is now managed by Irving Azoff's Front Line Management, and Azoff is a well-known proponent of issuing albums exclusively through retailers. He released the Eagles' "Long Road Out Of Eden" through Wal-Mart in 2007, much to the chagrin of other merchants, but the album was a runaway hit, having sold 3.1 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
