Teenagers should be forced to stay in school at lunchtimes to stop them going out for junk food, Schools Secretary Ed Balls has said.
He also wants councils to use planning regulations to stop takeaways and fast food restaurants from opening up near by.
Addressing the Healthy Eating in Schools Conference in central London Mr Balls claimed there was "no point" in banning junk food in schools if teenagers can get unhealthy food from nearby shops which undercut school lunch prices.
Is this likely to stop the desire for junk food or just make kids skip school or break out? Surely we should be working on education rather than being authoritarian.Teenagers should be forced to stay in school at lunchtimes to stop them going out for... more

Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has launched an attack on British culture stating that Brits are uncivilised and obsessed with materialistic wealth and a "culture of alcohol".
The 33-year-old describes his countrymen's obsession with widescreen TVs, cars, mobile phones, and beer as being symptomatic of "the new poverty" blighting the UK.
The comments were made in an interview in the latest edition of Paris Match magazine published in French, in which Oliver contrasts the country with France, where old fashioned customs are still observed.
Commenting on the fact that 80 per of the British do not even bother sitting round a table for dinner any more, Oliver says: "It's true in the centre of London and in the big northern cities. It's linked to the new poverty. It's nothing to do with famine or war - quite the opposite. England is one of the richest countries in the world. The people I'm telling you about have huge TV sets - a lot bigger than mine! - they have state-of-the-art mobile phones, cars, and they go and get drunk in pubs at the weekend - their poverty shows in the way they feed themselves."

Jamie Oliver caused controversy last night by making an apparent reference to the Holocaust.
The 33-year-old celebrity chef told a live audience how his Jamie’s Fowl Dinners show, about the treatment of intensively farmed chickens, was shown around the world.
The Naked Chef presenter quipped that only German viewers had complained about the controversial scene in which a group of chicks was gassed in an example of cruel industry practices.
Oliver, who campaigns for livestock welfare and healthier school meals, said: 'We had a lot of complaints about the gassing of chicks in Germany.
'It’s gone all around the world and the one country that has a problem with it is Germany. I thought “F****** hell!”’
The comments were interpreted as a reference to the Nazi regime’s use of gas chambers to kill millions of Jews during the Second World War. Jamie Oliver caused controversy last night by making an apparent reference to the... more
