Singapore's second integrated resort opened its doors at the auspicious hour of 3.18pm (0718GMT) on Tuesday (April 27).
The long-awaited Marina Bay Sands, a subsidiary of Las Vegas Sands Corp, held its soft launch celebration with much fanfare of traditional Chinese lion dance.
Chief Executive Officer of Las Vegas Sands Corp, Sheldon Adelson, opened the 5.5 billion-U.S. dollar integrated resorts. The grand opening is set for June 23.
The world's No.2 most expensive casino after MGM Mirage's CityCenter in Las Vegas, is expected to generate as much as 1 billion USD in annual profit and surpass its U.S. counterparts in churning out revenue for Las Vegas Sands by next year.
Some visitors rushing to have the first glimpse of the building was impressed at the design and amenities.
"Oh it seems like... They've got a great bar behind you, they've got great facilities here. Once that garden on the rooftop opens that's going to be fantastic. Of course restaurants, bars, and of course the casinos. So it just seems like a great place," said Richard Fan, an American working in Singapore.
Others who have visited the other casino in the city state's Sentosa island, which opened in February, said they prefer Resorts World Sentosa.
"The difference is there is more organised. They have been opening for so long so here is like quite rough. The finishes not there yet, so it's not very attractive to me. I still like that side," said Lucy Sim, a Singapore resident.
Singapore, with its two mega casinos, is unlikely to overtake Macau but may steal some "high-rollers" from China as operators shift premium business to the city-state where they face an effective tax rate of 12 percent compared with about 39 percent in the Chinese territory.
Neighbouring Malaysia's sole casino, run by Genting Singapore's parent Genting Bhd, may also lose business to Singapore's newer and swankier casinos.
Marina Bay Sands has teamed up with coach operators to offer 130 daily trips from various Malaysian cities to its doorsteps.
Adelson, who envisioned the resort, is confident that Singapore is the right place for his casino.
"It's going to be a grand slam winner. There is no casino like this, that's an integrated resort anywhere in the world. And we are smack right in the middle of the place where, first of all not just the Chinese, but the Malaysians, the Indonesians, the Thais, the Vietnamese, there are people - Asian people just love to gamble," said Adelson, who is also the main shareholder.
Singapore legalised casino gaming in 2005 but not all Singaporeans were happy with the decision, fearing the casinos would attract crime and lead to problem gambling among it citizens.
The city state's gaming rival, the former Portuguese enclave of Macau, crammed with over 30 casinos and the only place in China where casino gambling is legal, has already eclipsed gambling revenues seen in casino capital Las Vegas.
Asia's emergence as global casino centre comes as gaming revenues in Las Vegas, Atlantic City and other U.S. centres decline or show little growth, hit by the poor economic climate.
Marina Bay Sands, when completed, will have 2,560 hotel rooms, convention facilities for up to 45,000 delegates, restaurants run by celebrity chefs and an eye-catching cantilevered, 200-metre-high floating garden perched on top of three hotel towers.Singapore's second integrated resort opened its doors at the auspicious hour of... more

The world's first ever camera is on show at an exhibition in Macau, no doubt forming the centrepiece of the 'The Invention of Photography and the Earliest Photographs.'
It's not exactly the height of aesthetically pleasing technology, but the wooden sliding box did mark the way of the camera.
The cam will be surrounded by 250 photography antiques and 180 old photos, although it's unconfirmed if photgraphy will be allowed in the exhibition...The world's first ever camera is on show at an exhibition in Macau, no doubt... more

Colonized by the Portuguese in the 16th century, Macau was the first European settlement in the Far East.
Pursuant to an agreement signed by China and Portugal on April 13,1987, Macau became the Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China on Dec. 20, 1999.
China has promised that, under its "one country, two systems" formula, China's socialist economic system will not be practiced in Macau, and that Macau will enjoy a high degree of autonomy in all matters except foreign and defense affairs for the next 50 years.
