Lyme/Autism group blasts genetically modified foods as dangerous

Stop eating dangerous genetically modified (GM) foods! That's the upshot of the Lyme Induced Autism (LIA) Foundation's position paper released today.

The patient advocacy group is not willing to wait around until research studies prove that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) cause or worsen the many diseases that are on the rise since gene-spliced foods were introduced in 1996. Like the American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) earlier this year, the LIA Foundation says there is more than enough evidence of harm in GM animal feeding studies for them to "urge doctors to prescribe non-GMO diets" and for "individuals, especially those with autism, Lyme disease, and associated conditions, to avoid" GM foods.

Dr. Jannelle Love, founder of the Autism Relief Foundation, is quoted in Kimberly Wilcox's excellent article:

"It is known that children on the Autistic Spectrum suffer from fragile immune systems, significant digestive and brain inflammation, and the environmental toxin overload. Putting foreign entities such as GMO foods into such a fragile child may indeed cause further deterioration and perhaps block the delicate biochemical pathways needed for appropriate functioning and possible recovery."

The LIA Foundation calls for physicians and patient advocacy groups to explain to patients the role that GM foods may play in disease and to distribute non-GMO educational materials, including the Non-GMO Shopping Guide, which makes it easier to find brands without GM ingredients. (See www.nonGMOGuide.com). They also called for a moratorium on all GM foods and for "Research to evaluate the role of GM foods on autism, Lyme disease, and related conditions."

GMOs: pervasive and high-risk

The five main GM foods are soy, corn, cotton, canola, and sugar beets. Their derivatives are found in more than 70 percent of the foods in the supermarket. The primary reason the plants are engineered is to allow them to drink poison. They're inserted with bacterial genes that allow them to survive otherwise deadly doses of poisonous herbicide. Biotech companies sell the seed and herbicide as a package deal. Roundup Ready crops survive sprays of Roundup. Liberty Link crops survive Liberty. US farmers use hundreds of millions of pounds more herbicide because of these herbicide-tolerant crops, and the higher toxic residues end up inside of us. The LIA position paper acknowledges that "Individuals with infections that compromise immunity... and/or high toxin loads may also be especially susceptible to adverse effects from pesticides."

Some GM corn and cotton varieties are also designed to produce poison. Inserted genes from a soil bacterium produce an insect-killing poison called Bt-toxin in every cell of the plant. Bt is associated with allergic and toxic reactions in humans and animals, and may create havoc in our digestive system (see below).

All GM crops, in fact, should be considered high-risk. Irrespective of which gene you insert, the process of genetic engineering itself results in massive collateral damage within the plants' natural DNA. This can result in new or higher levels of toxins, carcinogens, allergens, or nutrient-blocking compounds in our food.

Because of a corporate takeover at the FDA, they don't require a single safety test on GMOs -- so almost none of the potential side effects are evaluated before the crops are approved for sale. The few animal feeding safety studies that have been conducted, however, show serious problems. Morgellon's Disease: suffering and causes are both genuine

Few ailments in recent history have been the subject of as much controversy and even ridicule as Morgellon's Disease (or Syndrome). Having been in the medical limelight a great deal of late due to a plethora of cases, mostly in the southern US and west coast, experts of many types ranging from psychiatrists to epidemiologists have taken sides, either as believers or scoffers.

The condition itself is mysterious and horrifying: its victims have the sensation of insects crawling under their skin; they even claim that strange fibers, varying in color, emerge from their bodies at different points. Tragically, some who exhibit such unusual symptoms have been so tortured by the intense pain that, not finding any relief, and being derided as delusional by the medical profession, they have taken their lives.

Conventional medicine has labeled the disease a mental illness, claiming the sufferers imagine the parasites afflicting them subcutaneously. How, then, would they come up with the colored fibers emerging from the lesions that are supposedly self-inflicted? Also, why would the cases reported be more prevalent in specific regions of the country? Some theories currently being explored are links to actual parasites. In fact there is some resemblance to one parasite, called loa loa, that has its life cycle under the skin of its human host, after being virtually injected by the bite of the adult fly. Although this may not be the actual culprit, there is the possibility that another, at this point unknown/unnamed, insect is responsible.

Another theory involves the possible result of genetically-modified foods causing insects to mutate. Since these foods haven't been around long enough for us to know exactly how they will affect the environment, how can we tell if other organisms haven't already maladapted? Look at the MRSA bacteria: these "supergerms" have evolved due to being bombarded with antibiotics. It's not a far stretch to suppose that higher lifeforms could react in a similar manner.

Still another idea involves an offshoot-illness caused by Lyme Disease. Some scientists claim there are similarities between this illness, caused by deer ticks (another parasite), and Morgellon's. In this event, there is hope for the victims, as Lyme Disease IS treatable.

While the scientific world still squabbles over the reality of this ailment, the alternative medicine field is searching for solutions. There is some hope already of effective herbal treatments, for example. In the meantime, holistic health providers look at patients not as hysterical self-mutilators, but as people with new loa loalegitimate conditions, in need of help, and in need of being believed.Few ailments in recent history have been the subject of as much controversy and even... more

LYME DISEASE-Help stop this silent epidemic crawling across our nation

Having become debilitated from Lyme Disease over 4 years ago, I feel it is long over due that the American public know that our own government, through the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) along with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has blatantly denied the existence of this horrific medical condition becoming long-term or chronic. If one is lucky enough to test positive with our current "Dark Ages" technology, you have to be even luckier to find a Medical Doctor (MD)who understands that the cure is a simple short-term treatment of antibiotics before the debatable treatment window of several weeks to several months closes.

Also, any MD smarter than a bag of hammers can make an easy diagnosis with a patient's physical ailments matched to a lengthy list of irrefutable symptoms, aside from the obvious "bulls-eye rash" that a minority of us Lymies in reality report ever seeing. Once you progress from short-term & easily treatable to the chronic stage & barely treatable when most body systems have been Lyme infiltrated & severely compromised, the nightmare becomes all too real as you struggle to understand how our government & medical community could let thousands of lives deteriorate physically, emotionally & financially, which adversely affects thousands of families, go on for so long without the public outcry that is now necessary to wake America up to a silent epidemic sweeping the nation. Victoria Wilcox, 17, is boldly going where many teens have not gone before. Because she's been diagnosed with a debilitating case of Lyme disease, which can often leave her nauseated, weak, confused and fatigued, Victoria has had to grow up fast. Spending more than a month in the hospital at once would have anyone thinking that her glass is half-empty, but this teen has instead decided to view the situation in a more positive light.

Victoria says, "I am thankful for the people it has brought into my life and some things that it has brought to me." And, as a matter of fact, Victoria has focused all of her positive energy and her gratitude into the organization of a Lyme disease walk with her friend, Sarah Lynch, which will occur on June 7.

With the help of friends, family and others who are affected by Lyme, Victoria is hoping that this walk will raise awareness about the disease itself and its prevention. Victoria's Web site, www. lymewalk.org, contains all the information regarding the walk, Victoria's own story about her struggle with Lyme disease and how the public can show its support.

Like Victoria, many teens are compelled to give something back to their community, and she is an excellent example of how one can do so. Despite her own physical limitations, she is determined to do the best she can to help others. So what is her advice to teens looking to make a positive impact on the rest of the world?
