Hundreds of Chinese students gathered at Independence Square to cheer for the Olympic flame as it began its four-hour relay through Kuala Lumpur today.
Following the tension that has surrounded the torch's global journey, heavy security was in place to protect the 80 runners carrying the Olympic torch along the 10-mile route through the Malaysian capital.
One protester wearing a "Free Tibet" shirt and holding a pro-Tibet sign, was allegedly mobbed by Chinese spectators who then began hitting her with small Chinese flags before she was carried away unhurt by a photographer.
"As soon as spectators saw what she was doing, they immediately mobbed her, hitting her with flags," said Brad Kesler, an American tourist who was there to watch the start of the relay.
It is reported that the Chinese Embassy drafted in 500 Chinese students who are studying in Maylasia to attend the event, with them also receiving transportation to the procession.Hundreds of Chinese students gathered at Independence Square to cheer for the Olympic... more

Anti-Chinese protests have greeted the arrival of the Olympic torch in India, home to the world's largest Tibetan exile community.
The torch relays in Paris, London and San Francisco all had a high turnout of protesters but subsequent trips to Kazakhstan, Russia, Argentina, Tanzania, Oman and Pakistan passed without public controversy.
In New Delhi, thousands of extra police have been drafted in and Tibetan exiles are reported to gave staged near-daily demonstrations against China.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports that more than 2000 protesters held a rival torch relay in the capital on Wednesday, hours before the official Olympic flame relay began. Tibetans, led by Buddhist monks, marched 2.5 kilometres shouting slogans like "Long live the Dalai Lama" and "Stop the killings in Tibet".Anti-Chinese protests have greeted the arrival of the Olympic torch in India, home to... more

As China's 2008 Beijing Olympic Torch Relay continues, we are constantly reminded that human rights are abused around the globe. The abuses continues on Wednesday as the torch makes it way through Pakistan. Previous plans included a public parade of the torch, but Pakistan changed it's mind. Now only invited guests will view the torch in a heavily guarded stadium.
"The decision to move the relay behind closed doors came a day after Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf attacked the West over the protests that have dogged the event.
Musharraf accused Western leaders and media of politicizing the Olympics by criticizing China's human rights record and its policy in Tibet.
"First of all, we consider Tibet an inalienable part of China," he said in an interview with China Daily on Sunday. If "anyone is harboring or abetting the separatists, we condemn that."
Musharraf is in Beijing to meet with various Chinese officials."

At least Japan has had the courage to refuse them entry for the Japanese leg of the Olympic Torch carrying ritual. I am amazed that the UK, France, Argentina and other countries accepted their presence. Leave the Olympics alone. Think of the sacrifices from all of the athletes, their families and supporters of years of time and money. The Olympics should be neutral and non-political. This story is a little old, and I'm sorry if its a repost, but I couldn't find it anywhere else on current.
Apparently some of the guards of the Olympic Flame are not even citizens of the countries in which it is traveling. China has amassed its own "flame protection squad" which is authorized to protect the flame in foreign countries, and has been doing so throughout its treacherous journey.
'Yolaine De La Bigne, a French environmental journalist who was a torchbearer in Paris, told The Associated Press she tried to wear a headband with a Tibetan flag, but the Chinese agents ripped it away from her.
"It was seen and then, after four seconds, all the Chinese security pounced on me. There were at least five or six (of them). They started to get angry" and shouted "No! No! No!" in English, she said.'
from http://blog.foreignpolicy.com/node/8610 :
"The agents are described as "employees of the Beijing Organizing Committee," which founded a "flame protection squad" in August 2007. [...]
According to Chinese media, the agents are members of the paramilitary People's Armed Police, which in China is responsible for fighting unrest and maintaining internal stability. Tens of thousands of the "Wujing," as the People's Armed Police are called in Chinese, recently took part in crackdowns against demonstrators in Tibet and neighboring regions.
"These men, chosen from around the country, are each tall and large and are eminently talented and powerful," the squad's leader Zhao Si was quoted as saying. "Their outstanding physical quality is not in the slightest inferior to that of specialized athletes."
This sort of action is practically treason, letting officials from other countries police our citizens. Again, sorry if I'm late on the scene with this one, but it really grinds my gears.

Get your tinfoil hats ready, people - there's something strange afoot.
A reader has got in touch to point out the strangeness of today's UK Google News seems weirdly devoid of any mention of the Olympic torch protests that took place yesterday.
You know, the ones that are on the front page of every newspaper, leading most of the TV and radio bulletins and prominently featured on news websites such as the BBC and the Guardian.
As our tipster points out "You could be looking at Google's news page for the UK and not have any idea it was going on (though you would know Keith Allen thinks Diana's death wasn't an accident!)."
The story actually features on the sports pages, and there is currently a mention of China in the third story on the World news page "China faces long-term risks from tough Tibet stance" from our very own site. So this might indicate an algorithmic cockup - perhaps all stories about the Olympics are deemed sports, not hard news.
At best, it's a horrible inadequacy of Goog's news ranking system. At worst? Well, let's see what Google's explanation is first.
