When I was little, I used to pretend I was a wild girl. I would sit in the tub, water running, while my parents complained that my baths took too long and can you imagine the hot water bill and what was I doing in there?…and suddenly the shower became a waterfall, the steam became the heat of the jungle, and I became a powerful Amazon, lost to the wilderness, raised by wolves.
I still do that sometimes, actually. (Luckily, my partner loves long baths just as much as I do. It’s our one big eco-waste.)
Unlike me, Erin Shaw doesn’t waste anything. In fact, her warrior fantasies are represented in her art: faux animal headdresses made of found natural objects, like tree bark, woven together with felted wool.
“The very beginning of nature and earth can be read in a tree. By using fragments of trees through consistent collecting, the work echos it’s inherent lineage. The collected material that I incorporate into the work inspires the direction of each piece. Allowing the work to transform the wearer, creating a new story in each atmosphere.
“This work reflects a personal exploration of the living soul through metaphorical constructions. Each piece investigates multiple associations that are present in nature through timeless enchantment. I favor found materials that contribute their function, cultural value, and traces of personal history into each design. By employing basic methods of connection such as felting, knitting and crochet the work is imbued with a strong feminine sensibility.”
-Erin’s artist statement
Based in Cambridge, MA, Erin uses traditional techniques to create free-form sculptures that are inspired by and pertain to the female figure. Her work “stems from an affinity to nature and a mysterious connection to [her] ancestry.”
“The silhouette of each work is derived from the silhouettes of trees with an emphasis on the feminine figure.”
Each one-of-a-kind piece starts with found materials, which Erin is constantly collecting, and takes two-to-three months to complete. The headdresses are needle felted by hand, or created using free-form knit and crochet to symbolize the textures of bark and moss. However, all of her designs have one thing in common: they each lead back to a respect and reverence for mother nature, for the female form, and most importantly, for the found items she uses to create her headdresses: trees.
“The idea of the tree in particular; family tree, roots, time, history remains an important icon in the direction of each piece.”

This is my interview with Chaske Spencer. Perhaps no better way to wish you all a happy Day of the Dead than by taking a moment to talk with an actor acquainted with the undead and Chaske has come to fame as both Dracula and Sam Uley the leader of the Wolfpack in Twilight. Chaske is also the founder of Shift the Power to the People a charity focused on making sustainable change in communities across the world. Starting with the Cheyene River Sioux Tribe who were devastated by a brutal winter storm season and are working hard to rebuild their water and power infrastructure. He opens up about his new production company and projects and is even willing to talk about experiences with addiction, poverty, and racism.

RACEBENDING.COM: I’m curious, did your parents, being educators, talk about Indian Boarding Schools? Was that something that drove them to say, maybe make a positive change to address some of those issues, to do good in the community?
CHASKE SPENCER: I remember hearing stories from my mother and father about their parents and grandparents when they were taken of the reservation, taken to the boarding schools, and pretty much taught to be ashamed of who they were as Native Americans. You can feel that impact today.
I think that’s why there is so much alcohol and drug abuse on reservations, because the self-esteem of those people–they were robbed of the self-esteem for who they are. Our people were a beautiful people, and they still are.
The impact of that has affected generations. You had abuse, sexual abuse, at these boarding schools, plus, they were forced to cut their own hair–to be ashamed of who they were. If they spoke their own tongue, their mouths were washed out with soap. You can feel that effect today.
It’s very sad but it’s an awareness; I think our people do know, but some are ashamed to talk about it. If you start talking about it, you realize that’s a key point in our history, where we turned, where something happened. I believe it’s coming back with the Sundances, the Sweat Lodges and Native American spirituality coming back. We were just granted our rights here in the 1970s.
RACEBENDING.COM: Do you think that media representation plays a role in this, because there is a lack of positive portrayals in the media? So many overtly racist practices were allowed to continue well after segregation and other practices had stopped.
CHASKE SPENCER: Yeah. I went to all white school where I dealt with racism. There was a point–when I was a kid–where I said I wanted to be like Luke Skywalker, with blond hair and blue eyes. My mom right there told me to never be ashamed of who I am.
It was just conditioning. You see it everywhere in Hollywood–you know, in the media in general–it’s conditioning, conditioning everywhere you look. It took somewhere into my teens for me to really understand who I was and to start being proud of who I was. This is my interview with Chaske Spencer. Perhaps no better way to wish you all a... more

There are too many graves of all races because of alcohol, prescription drugs and street drugs. But none that say smoked one too many marijuana cigarettes. If we were to take a walk with a knowledgeable medicine elder through a pharmacy and checked the ingredients I wonder how many of those were plants their elders had used one time or another too heal. Our ancestors planted, cultivated, nourished, picked, preserved and passed down to those worthy and respectful of the medicines.

American Indians and non-natives are encouraged to visit the northern Michigan campsite that is blocking a sulfide mine - as in sulfuric acid - from being built under Sacred Eagle Rock.
Levi Tadgerson, an Anishinaabe man who loves and respects the environment, narrates this video that invites everyone to join the encampment at the base of Eagle Rock - the sooner the better because a confrontation between mine owners, the police and those protecting Sacred Eagle Rock could happen at any moment.
Tadgerson is a 22-year-old Northern Michigan University senior and member of Bay Mills Indian Community.
In the video, you will see the many amazing things happening to protect Sacred Eagle Rock including an appearance by popular American Indian singer/songwriter Elder Bobby "Bullet" St. Germaine of Iron River, MI - an elder of the Lac Du Flambeau tribe in Wisconsin.
He sings and leads a thank you drum under the shadow of Sacred Eagle Rock.
This video was shot on 4/29/2010.
Background:
Eagle Rock has been a sacred place to hold ceremonies since the Ojibwa tribe was created and was seeded to the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community (KBIC) under treaties with the American government.
The multi-tribe encampment, that could be raided by mine guards and police at any moment, is blocking the Eagle Mine Project by international mining giant Kennecott Minerals and its parent company Rio Tinto.
KBIC member Glen Bressette Jr., 38, of Harvey, Michigan brought a rare legally-permitted Eagle has been received to award feathers to those who honor their tribes by protecting sacred Eagle Rock and other honorable actions.
Dozens of people from numerous tribes have spent days at the camp - and many others have brought supplies to the remote site on dirt roads about an hour from any city.
The state of Michigan has claimed ownership to the land - but the lease with Kennecott only takes effect when the mine has secured all permits.
Opponents say the mine must still get a federal EPA groundwater permit - but under a technicality the mine owners say they do not need the permit and recently put up “No Trespassing” signs.
The American Indians rushed to the sight after Kennecott ordered the arrest of longtime mine opponent Cynthia Pryor of Big Bay, MI on April 20, 2010.
Pryor was out for her usual walk on the Yellow Dog Plains when she spotted a bulldozer - and refused to leave saying the mine still had an EPA permit pending.
Pryor is a member of the Yellow Dog Watershed Preserve.
Among the Ojibwa tribes from Michigan and Wisconsin on sight are KBIC, Lac Du Flambeau, and Bay Mills Indian Community.
As of April 30th, the mine guards has not confronted the campers - but the day before ordered no still or video cameras are allowed. That has campers worried about why what they do not want videotaped or documented - thus nerves are high.
When a reporter arrived a short time later - the campers allowed him on the sight and this story was videotaped.

When officials with the Eagle Mine Project in Michigan's Upper Peninsula arrested Cynthia Pryor for trespassing in April 20, 2010, they didn't count on the public outrage over the jailing of this 58 year old grandmother and longtime environmentalist.
In this video, Pryor explains what happened before and after her arrest.
Cynthia Pryor of Big Bay, Michigan belongs to several environment groups including serving as the the Sulfide Mining Campaign Director for the Yellow Dog Watershed Preserve. Her attorney, Kevin Koch of Negaunee, MI, says Pryor wants a jury trial on the misdemeanor charge.
Pryor is scheduled for a pretrial court hearing at 1 p.m. on May 6. The charge carries a maximum sentence of 30 days in jail and or a $250 fine.
The video was produced by the nonprofit Cedar Tree Institute in Marquette, MI, which has founded numerous youth, faith and Native American related environment projects.

Well, we have been very busy meeting folks who want to donate money and also raising funds with our core group on Kickstarter. So far we have raised over $8,000 and now have only have ten more days to raise support from Kickstarter.
As this amazing journey continues to the next level we are proud to say we have been blessed by our elders support and also support from Navajo Medicine families. As of today, we are so close to reaching our goal and now with just a few more thousand dollars we can finish this film and begin the next procedure which is distribution and post production. As Native American filmmakers we have noticed that since we began this journey, so often independent film making becomes a struggle for the filmmaker to stay in the green even after post production and usually end up in the the red, with debt still accumulating.
With this new insight to film making we are geared up for the big hunt, with only a few days left in our fund raising with Kickstarter, we now are reaching out again to our extended family for a few more dollars and everyone who contributes to our film will have credit as a supporter. You can find out more about this on the site at Kickstarter.
A big shout to all the folks who have donated so far, and we are very grateful for your belief of making dreams come true! Our heart goes to all filmmakers who have a dream and wish to be recognized by and maybe someday have the people watch their movies. With Spirit on our side we have noted to ourselves as tribal relations grow we have to give respect out to the ones before us. The Native world lives in the hope of being respected for the struggle, (so many other cultures have been torn apart by the world's greed). We give a sigh of relief knowing this movie will happen and some day you will watch our film and say "I helped make a dream come true". On that note we raise our glasses to the peeps who see this as another heartfelt letter to a brother or sister who thinks like we do.
