You don’t have to live in Walden to understand that there’s a connection between the environment, our economy, and the way we live. Majora Carter, an urban redeveloper and the founder of Sustainable South Bronx (SSBx), has worked since the late 1990s to bring together the worlds of urban renewal and environmental sustainability. The connections are many but often overlooked.
“Energy consumption, public health, storm-water management, prison recidivism, school performance, social services, stagnant property values, climate change adaptation, and income & health disparities can all be tied to environmental remediation on a municipal or regional scale,” according to the Majora Carter Group.

A quick one before we head out to see what's left of the now-dispersed 'MIDI' festival; a few quick thoughts on how the 'gag' order placed on athletes might cause more of a problem than the aforementioned pollution.

The linked rings on every Chinese Coke bottle and the leaping athletes on each McDonald's paper bag testify to the power the world's biggest corporations believe this summer's Olympics wields.
But having spent huge sums, the companies sponsoring the Beijing games are about to find themselves the targets of a new, more vigorous war on China's human rights record by campaigners boosted by the success of protests along the torch relay route.
Yesterday a coalition of Tibetan groups warned Coca-Cola that it would be "complicit in a humanitarian disaster" unless it used its influence to ensure Tibet was dropped from the torch route. And tomorrow, Dream for Darfur will launch a critical "report card" on sponsors of the games.
Campaigners are urging companies to press the International Olympic Committee and Beijing itself for change - or risk damaging their brands. "Companies [who do not act] will get physical protests; they will get letters; we will ask people to turn off their adverts," said Ellen Freudenheim, director of corporate outreach at Dream for Darfur, which argues that they should press China to put pressure on Sudan as its major oil buyer.
"Sponsors don't make policy and we understand that. But combined they have about the equivalent of the GDP of Canada, the world's eighth largest economy; they have government affairs offices; they have lobbying firms; they have international presences - and they all do engage in politics."The linked rings on every Chinese Coke bottle and the leaping athletes on each... more
Majora Carter talks about being selected by Coca-Cola to carry the torch for the Olympic Relay in San Francisco.
This is pretty interesting when you consider that Majora Carter is an outspoken activist and that many people are starting to protest Coke's sponsorship of the Beijing Olympics.
By the way, during the relay Majora whipped out a Tibetan flag. Immediately, the torch was snatched from her hands and she was pushed to the side. Good times!

This incredible woman, Majora Carter was just featured on a segment on CNN. I looked on their website for more information on her and her organization, but only found this link. She is an amazingly inspiring woman from the South Bronx with more than just great ideas about bringing environmentalism to the inner-city.She demonstrates that by implementing these ideas, she is bringing significant change. Isn't that what everyone is talking about these days?

Despite up to the nanosecond text blasts--Amira Diamond and Melinda Kramer couldn't find any of the re-routed, police blockaded, Olympic torches...but we did wind up with one of the Olympic Torch Bearers, Majora Carter (www.greenforall.org), after yesterday's San Francisco protest against China's occupation of Tibet.
We're making the moral of stories these days--you can take the torch from the torch bearer's hand, but the torch of her heart...now that's another story. The passion and peace of the people LIVE.
Special thanks to the evolutionary impulse that drives thousands of people to the street to be peaceful in the face of violence, Leah Lamb, Lora O'Connor, Marianne Manilov, and www.cyphertown.org

Majora Carter was removed from the San Francisco leg of the torch relay when she attempted to unfurl a Tibetan flag from her sleeve. She claims her 1st Amendment right as the basis for her actions although IOC charter clearly states that "No kind of demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda is permitted in any Olympic sites, venues or other areas."
Obviously she's a passionate woman who just wants her opinion heard. Although being an Olympic event, it was probably not of good standing for her to show her political views during such an event.
