CBS News Poll analysis by the CBS News Polling Unit: Sarah Dutton, Jennifer De Pinto, Fred Backus and Anthony Salvanto.
Almost half of American voters continue to view Sarah Palin unfavorably and most would not heed her political endorsements, a new CBS News/ New York Times poll shows.
The former vice presidential candidate's favorability rating has declined slightly since August, with 46 percent of surveyed voters viewing her unfavorably and 21 percent viewing her favorably. Thirty-two percent of voters said they were either undecided or hadn't heard enough to have an opinion, according to the poll, conducted Sept. 10-14. Last month, 23 percent of voters viewed Palin favorably, whereas 40 percent viewed her unfavorably and 35 percent didn't know.
However, Palin continues to enjoy support among Republicans, conservatives and - in particular - Tea Partiers: 56 percent of Tea Party members, 50 percent of Republicans and (a net positive of) 38 percent of conservatives said they have a positive opinion of Palin.
Democrats (68 percent) and Independents (a net negative of 45 percent) said they had a negative opinion of Palin.
Many voters said they would be less likely to vote for Palin-endorsed candidates, the poll indicates. Twelve percent of all voters said a Palin endorsement would make them more likely to vote for that candidate, while 37 percent said it would make them less likely to do so. But 48 percent said it made no difference.
And although 36 percent of Tea Partiers and 33 percent of Republicans said they would be more likely to vote for a Palin-backed candidate, most indicated that such an endorsement wouldn't affect their decisions: Fifty-seven percent of Tea Party supporters and 61 percent of Republicans said Palin's endorsement wouldn't make a difference in their vote. (Six percent of Tea Party members and five percent of Republicans said the former governor's endorsement would make them less likely to vote for a candidate.)
Two in three voters overall said they believe Palin's endorsements are motivated more by a desire to stay in the public eye than an interest in electing conservative candidates, but Republicans and Tea Party members are more divided. Among conservatives, 29 percent think she is more concerned with electing conservative candidates, while 53 percent think she mostly wants to stay in the public eye.
Of the 43 candidates Palin has endorsed, 25 have won primaries, 11 have lost and 7 have not had to face a primary, according to the Washington Post.
Meanwhile, all voters struggled to pinpoint a strong Republican leader: When asked which public person best represents the Republican party today, 62 percent of those surveyed - including 51 percent of Republicans - could not name someone. Among those who did, Sarah Palin was the top mention with just six percent, followed by John McCain (five percent) and Newt Gingrich (four percent). Among just Republicans, six percent named Palin, three percent named McCain, eight percent named Gingrich, and one percent named both Boehner and McConnell.
As for the top Republican leaders in Congress, just 35 volunteered House Minority Leader John Boehner, and only one percent of Americans mentioned Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.CBS News Poll analysis by the CBS News Polling Unit: Sarah Dutton, Jennifer De Pinto,... more

How would you feel if you had to go full circle and go back and live with your parents! This is a humorous rant from our 20 something year old blogger who is stuck living with her parents until she can get on her feet with a job and money. But in this recession, it doesn’t look promising and her parents are making her nuts. Really interesting insight into another family, a humorous attempt to show her parents oddities (her dad screaming obscenities at the TV and mom not wearing a bra I front of her partner—very humiliating). We all got em’, it’s how we live with them that’s key.
Blogger has an amazingly eclectic site with everything from beauty, fashion, diary style entries, poetry, life in the magazine world----this girl has everything. Already winner of the prestigious “Blog Of The Day Award” (some people take years to earn this—she’s only had her blog up 6 weeks!) and on top level blog rolls of awesome bloggers, this girl is amazing. A 32-year-old mother drowned her four-year-old daughter in the bath because she was ashamed of the girl's disability, a court heard.
Joanne Hill was "ashamed and embarrassed" of her four-year-old daughter Naomi's condition and struggled to cope caring for the youngster, who suffered with cerebral palsy. Hill then murdered her daughter in a "determined and planned act" after her husband refused to allow the child to be adopted.
Mrs Hill allegedly planned the murder for the afternoon of November 26 last year knowing her husband Simon would not be home until 5.30pm. After picking up Naomi from the childminder she drove them to the family home in north Wales, poured herself a glass of wine then ran a bath.
The barrister, Mr Chambers, said: "When the bath was full she told Naomi she was having a bath, but Naomi didn't want one. The defendant carried her upstairs and undressed her. The defendant put her in the bath and drowned her by holding her head under the water for a long time until she was dead." After the killing, Mrs Hill dressed her daughter's body as if nothing was amiss and drove her around for eight hours, drinking several glasses of wine, before taking her to hospital claiming she was unconscious, the jury heard.
Mrs Hill, who denies murder but admits manslaughter, told police she had been suffering from suicidal thoughts before the killing and later suggested she was psychotic.
But Mr Chambers said: "She quite simply wanted Naomi dead."
The prosecution does not accept Hill's diminished responsibility defence. They claim she was not suffering from any mental problems and had not been "entirely honest" since she was arrested. Jurors heard how Mrs Hill had told doctors that she was hearing voices in her head but had later admitted making up the account.

If not for YouTube, William Shanahan would still be the debate coach at Fort Hays State University and the school would still have an active debate program.
The video of his performance last spring at a tournament in Wichita was a minor sensation on the Internet a few weeks ago. For those who have missed the video and the news stories it generated, Shanahan is the coach who got into a profane extended shouting match with another coach. At one point in the proceedings, Shanahan turned his back on his opponent, bent over and dropped his pants.
In fairness to the Fort Hays coach, it was not a classic mooning — he kept his underwear up.
A few years ago, such an incident would have been swept under the rug, surviving only as a story told by coaches having a round of drinks after a tournament. But the ubiquity of cell phones and digital video cameras, coupled with the worldwide embarrassment mart that is YouTube, caught Shanahan in the act.
The video was posted earlier this month and somebody told the Fort Hays administration, which had not been aware of the incident.
The video was entertaining for people with a tolerance for vulgar language and bad behavior, but not for the administration of Shanahan’s university. Friday, President Edward Hammond announced that Shanahan had been fired and the school’s debate program was being suspended until action has been taken natonally to improve the standards of college debate, which seems to have deteriorated from civilized give-and-take to the level of a bar room brawl.
Is Shanahan being denied his right of free speech? No. As Hammond pointed out, the coach was not at the tournament as a private individual, but as a representative of Fort Hays State.
“Everyone has the right to freedom of speech,” Hammond said, “but these actions are not acceptable for someone who is representing our university.”
So now Shanahan is gone, undone by YouTube and his own bad behavior. He has no one to blame but himself.
If anyone deserves sympathy, it is the Fort Hays debate squad. They were strung up and left hanging by the man who was supposed to be their mentor. If not for YouTube, William Shanahan would still be the debate coach at Fort Hays... more
