Recordable Blu-ray media has been expensive, and slow to catch on, but would a bump to 100GB capacities change your mind? New developments made by Sharp could do just that by introducing a blue-violet laser which is able to read triple-layer or even quad-layer Blu-ray disks. Current BD-R single layer disks hold a mere 25GB...Recordable Blu-ray media has been expensive, and slow to catch on, but would a bump to... more

An obscure patent dispute has prompted a Texas District Court judge to order Microsoft to stop selling Word.
I4i, a software company based in Toronto, has been squabbling with Microsoft over a patent related to XML, or Extensible Markup Language. XML is a key software component of many websites as well as Word and other programs.
Judge Leonard Davis ruled Tuesday that Microsoft is at fault, and ordered the company to cease Word sales until the dispute is resolved. He also ordered Microsoft to pay several hefty fines to i4i, including $200 million in damages and $40 million in "enhanced damages." You can read the ruling here.
The decision may not stand for long. "We are disappointed by the court's ruling," says Microsoft spokesman Kevin Kutz, in a quote reported by the Seattle P-I. 'We believe the evidence clearly demonstrated that we do not infringe and that the i4i patent is invalid. We will appeal the verdict.'"
Patent disputes are common in the tech industry. Normally these issues proceed quietly, with little impact on customers. But the judge's ruling could have an unusual effect on the software industry's most powerful player.

In a move that probably won't come as a massive surprise, the CEO of Google, Eric Schmidt, has resigned from his position on Apple's Board of Directors.
“Eric has been an excellent Board member for Apple, investing his valuable time, talent, passion and wisdom to help make Apple successful,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Unfortunately, as Google enters more of Apple’s core businesses, with Android and now Chrome OS, Eric’s effectiveness as an Apple Board member will be significantly diminished, since he will have to recuse himself from even larger portions of our meetings due to potential conflicts of interest. Therefore, we have mutually decided that now is the right time for Eric to resign his position on Apple’s Board.”

The number of Internet users in China is now greater than the entire population of the United States, after rising to 338 million by the end of June, state media reported Sunday.
China’s online population, the largest in the world, rose by 40 million in the first six months of 2009, the official Xinhua news agency reported, citing a report by the China Internet Network Information Center.
The number of broadband Internet connections rose by 10 million to 93.5 million in the first half of the year, the report said.
About 95 percent of townships were connected to broadband by early June and 92.5 percent of villages had telephone lines that could be used for Internet access, Xinhua said, citing the official data.
Rural coverage is expected to improve as the country’s three telecoms operators, China Telecom, China Mobile and China Unicom invest 280 billion yuan (40 billion dollars) in a national 3G network over the next year, China Mobile vice president Lu Xiangdong was quoted as saying last week.
China’s fast-growing online population has made the Internet a forum for the country’s citizens to express their opinions in a way rarely seen in the traditional, strictly government-controlled media.
The growing strength and influence of the web population has prompted concern in Beijing about potential social unrest, and the government has stepped up its control over the Internet in recent years.
After rioting early this month in the capital of the restive northwest Xinjiang region, the government cut off online access to most of the area, in one of the largest known Internet blackouts in China yet.
It has also blocked access to Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and a range of other sites used for networking and sharing content. The number of Internet users in China is now greater than the entire population of the... more
